Is P just too old to deliver great , imaginative up tempo Dance music.. remember the days when his grooves would slam the dance floor, sound new and exciting etc. Listen to 'Love' and it sounds horribly dated, so many of his attempts at dance since the late 90's have missed the mark by a mile. He sounds like an old man tryin' to keep up. Shame, cuz he really is great live and his knowledge of groove and rythm is second to none. Should we hook him up woth Beck and gorillaz CDS!!

And live it is hot as fuck Regarding beats, Prince's style has been biten so much. It makes me laugh when people say pharell should produce Prince! Say Wha? The guy has made a living lifting Prince's grooves from 20yrs ago. Its as if these people have only just caught up to the sounds he was making back then (and these are the guys who sound fresh/ living in the now? hmmm?). t add insult to injury, these are the guys todays press are labelling 'genius'. It's a fuckin joke Has Princes sound dated? 'dated' is something i hate to use in reference to music. It means nothing. What period of 'time' would u place the piano? "man, dont put no piano on your record, that shit is old". See, it makes no sense. Todays popular music (and i use that term loosely) becomes boring or, if u prefer, 'dated' so quickly because it is often devoid of any originality, ideas, or inspiration. Nope, it relies on gimmicks - slang terminology - and all the parafinalia that comes with it, such as, videos and their contents. "oh, bentley have brought a new car out? shit, my last video and the chant that accompanied it is OLD". Plus the way radio, labels, and EMP-T-V work and force feed its listeners and consumers also plays a major part, too. How much as Country music changed.. ever? does it sound old? what about classical? jazz? prince will only ever struggle when he losses sight of the music, when he tries to follow other instead of doing what he does best - his own thing. Admittedly, he has been guilty of this on occasions. Yet, Prince has created a sound all of his own. It is so identifable. Is this sound 'old'? perhaps. But its only 'old' because it has 'survived' for nearly 30 years in the music biz (often standing alone) whilstsome sounds last little over a year. Thats no mean feat for an ..ahem... old man As u said.. Live, prince will never die, but he'll kill most - young and old. and as the guy himself said "when the lights go down and the mics turned up.. thats what TIME it is" [Edited 3/14/07 7:56am]

nah, it's a great, traditional funk track. Way too slow to be a hit in a club, but rocks live.

I've said this before but I still think it's all relative. What do you consider "dance music?" What type of dancing are you trying to do? I would think People can still dance to his music. Can't u dance to Guitar?

And there is the whole problem/point right there. You are obviously concerned what other people think. You care what is "hot" and what is "cool". Prince has always done what he has wanted to do. You can choose to dance or choose not to--it ain't on Prince it's on you and your expectations. "New Power slide...."

How can someone be too old to deliver uptempo music? Hell, the older artists are the only ones that throw down (although it's strictly on tour these days).
The majority of these little brats are the ones stuck in midtempo and refuse to get out of it. I haven't heard such boring slow shit since the days of symphony and opera. Lawrence Welk was more uptempo than their little dead asses. Andy is a four letter word.

true BUT not dance music.Madonna totally rules in the Oldies dance music arena cuz she uses young , hip producers. When I heard that her latest album was full of all uptempo dance music, I was expecting it to be house jams maybe similar to her "Erotica" album (example: "Thief of Hearts"). When I bought her latest album, it was that dull trance sounding stuff that all sounds alike. It's definately uptempo but it's not danceable at all (unless you hop around like rabbits like these preppy kids in these clubs these days who can't dance at all). . . [Edited 3/14/07 12:12pm] Andy is a four letter word.

It depends on the ear of a listener. If you listen to new R&B (I use that term LOOSELY) Ciara, Pretty Ricky,Akon, Neo, etc. Prince will sound horrible in a mix with them. Just like if you were at an old school set and played classical funk with one the new artist thrown in. You would get blank looks. Hearing new Prince is like hearing old Prince. I lives in its on own world.

Those so-called artists you speak about need to take lessons from Prince in the area of "Originality." [Edited 3/14/07 12:33pm]

Lawrence Welk was more uptempo than their little dead asses. Well put. Yesterday, I heard some little pop whippet singing a ditty on top of Soft Cell's "Tainted Love" which was pretty pathetic. I really wish people would get off the age thing here. I dunno but growing up young people were supposed to be the open minded, free spirits and the old people were the closed minded "you can't do that", but nowadays it feels as if the tables have turned. The older folks are the freer spirits and the young people just sit around and bitch about everything that we can't do or say or wear. Get off it! I'm now halfway through Zelda and the Twighlight Princess or am I too old to do even that? LQ

Have u heard "LOVE"? Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

This post is probably one of the smartest things I have ever read in here. Agree with you 1000%!! Bravo!! It's like the man's a prisoner of his own success. We have to always keep in mind that Prince has been around so long, those younger fans seem to forget about his obvious influence on guys like Pharrel and Beck...so much so that they get the facts twisted with regards to who came first! And the point you made about his art being "dated"? Again, brilliant! Never thought about it that way. How can you date sound? It's damn near impossible to try and categorize something as interpretive as music by placing a time period around it's relevance. Either you like it or you don't. Time and space have nothing to do with that... Just my 2 cents.

When I was younger most of the popular artists were a lot older than my generation but were rocking it: WT&F, Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan, Isley Brothers, etc. and I've never heard anyone say "are they too old to make dance music?" So at this point, how can Prince be too old to make dance music? If you are a talented musician you will be able to grab the masses, young & old & otherwise. Aren't his concerts full of people young & old? Aren't there brand new Prince fans who love his current music? I would say he can deliver great music but it's within the listener to interpret whether or not it's imaginative.

Yes P does what he wants to do BUT the point is that he tries to do Dance music and it really does show his limitations. Remember the days when he'd make technology work for him and use it alongside real instruments to create music that encompassed so much. It's no sin really that he can't cut it on the dance floor just natural progression!.

Black Sweat and Love proved to me that he still has it in him to make hot dance music. I wish he would do an all dance CD. That would be hot! I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

I really wonder what you consider good dance music? For most people, the only thing that really is required for a good dance/club song is a good beat. That's it. No one cares about the lyrics for a club song. Layering? Who cares about layering? You are not going to hear layering in a club. Most songs that people consider good dance music sounds absolutely horrible outside of the club when you can actually hear what you are listening to.

I might have 2 agree with the orginal poster. Prince is 2 old to make loop based, simple ass music that puts u 2 sleep after the 4th loop. I agree with u 100%.

Talking through your rose tinted butt again!,there is a wealth of top quality dance music out there, especially in the UK where we are perhaps more receptive to new ideas.Yes there is much crap around but a sure fire way of P getting back on the radio in Europe is through dance. NOT the kind of sell out that Lionel and Cher do!, but top drawer , imaginitive, catchy trax that he probably has gathering dust in the vault.
