The SYMBOL Album (Then & Now)

I remember the symbol album goin number 1 here in the UK. Mainly due 2 the previous album, Diamond & Pearls album doin so well.

But the reason it did so well even though critics said it was unPrince like and 2 commercial.

Was the massive European tour Diamond & Pearls tour 1992. I went 2 the Manchester show, around 50'000 at former Manchester football/soccer ground.

I know for a fact dat the diamonds & Pearls tour was the most Lucrative live show for that time. I dunno if anyone can confirm it still is?

What im tryin 2 say is critics were dispointed, meanin they didnt understand the marketin or role of the album. So Prince & The NPG response said, well they claimed it was revolutionary for its time.

I agree totally. There is so many undiscovered genres in there. I mean listen 2 '3 Chains o Gold' or Continential or 7. These songs are so unheard-like.

What i remeber mostly about this album, dat it was my favourate, at Prince peak, in live performance. Over all the sales were disappointin world wide, but i remember Prince or Micheal B sayin this album is timeless, dat if they released it in 10 years from now, it would be more appreciated. Ahead of its time, i think.

What bout u?

there r soo many great songs on this album. it does deserve more credit than it gets. i absolutely love "Blue Light" (still in my top 10 fave Prince songs). plus, "Damn U", "Sweetbaby", and "Morning Papers" were fantastic.

The whole storyline and the segues were a bit confusing, and Tony M´s contribution make the album sound a bit dated ( otherwise it would truly be a timeless classic) but it´s a great album.

I really enjoyed the SYMBOL CD then and I do now. I thought then that the rap
in the music was unnecessary. I would have liked to hear the music without the rapping.

And time consequently proved them wrong. It has its moments, but on the whole the album is easily one of Prince's most dated. Tacky raps and dated production on about half the CD have aged it very badly. And remember, Prince even put this album down on his own NPGMC site a couple of years back, comparing it unfavourably with The Rainbow Children.

Ahead of its time? It was already a couple of years out of date when it was released.

His fifth or sixth best album, I like all the tracks, it's one of the best produced albums of all time.

I can't see the reason: Come has a great production and a clever sound (but is filled with lesser, uninspired material), while Love symbol sounds even better and has better tracks...

I don't consider it uninspired...It's very dark and claustrophobic.
prince is ruined by Tony M and by being very long.

But it's a matter of personnal taste.

Despite involving a similar contemporary vibe, it's almost the opposite from prince . Focused and streamlined, it took the more 'modern' Prince sound and became something far more worthy of the Prince name than prince could ever be.

It's a shame that Loose wasn't a single. It would have been massive.

So do u think the album at time of release, in 1992, was a head of its time? Should it be released again?

Havin 3 top ten hits in UK. It must have been a memorable album. The whole, 'Damon Can Dance', and 'carmer Electric' will make u come a thousand times' (lol). Those quotes and more where displayed on 2 giant screens at time of 'Diamonds & Pearls tour 1992. It really helped the Symbol album beein a number 1 hit.
