James Brown was known to record songs as Part 1 and Part 2. Since "The Work" is obviously paying respects to James Brown, I think the Part 1 was added as an indication that Prince is acknowledging that the whole style, sound and feeling of the song The Work was patterned after a James Brown classic.

"The Work" is a continuing process. As we acheive certain goals, we enter into other parts of The Work. Ultimately The Work becomes complete when Revelation is fulfilled.

And there was a Thieves In The Temple Pt2 as b-side of the Japanese cd-single, but that was just a small instrumental part of the remix...
