True. The album got great revoews when it first came out.

I think UTCM hurt Parade, too, though Kiss & time in general have aged it quite nicely. Also, GB made UTCM look like a great film. Before that, UTCM had been seen as one of the great flops in film.

The songs from the protegees are the only thing that makes it decent. The Prince songs on the album are some of his worst.

I would think they were talking about the movie, which is the worst piece of crap ever conceived by a thinking human.

Anyone who doesn't like the album, is frankly a braindead idiot.

I agree that, at the time, I was very let down by this album. After the recent successes of SOTT and Laovesexy, as a fan, I expected more. Looking back after all these years, I have a greater respect and appreciation for the album, and I actually enjoy it from time to time. It beats the hell out of several of his offerings of the '90s.

With that being said, 'Elephants and Flowers' is probably in my top 25 and, in my opinion, is one of the more underrated songs he's produced. That shit's funky to me for some reason. Uplifting, light and funky.

Just watched it for the first time.

The reason I will watch it again it see Prince carry around Ms Chavez. I didn't know he had it in him. That was SEXX-AY! horny

Other than that, I felt it was self-indulgent.

Not everyone hates it.

I think generally the main points of criticism are:

- The mix of Prince and other artists on the same album
- Rap / TC Ellis
- The rub-off from the movie
- Old songs included in inferior versions
- The opinion that after SOTT or Lovesexy, Prince's quality control decreased

At it's core, the 9 Prince tracks are largely great, with few stinkers (the same can be said for the other artists material IMO).

A lot of people prefer the earlier versions of stuff like We Can Funk, Can't Stop, and the un-segued version of Joy In Rep.

Yeah I agree with many of your points, especially mixing it up with different artist. I enjoy the album by just making my own version with just the prince songs. I throw in get off/the lubricated lady and the remix of thieves in the temple.

Is there a book that details how this train wreck came to be in good detail?

I swear, it exceeded all my expectations for ass sucking... and then some. Which was really disappointing because I figured after the so-so UTCM, Graffiti Bridge had to be better. falloff

I think it´s also a matter of bad timing. If the movie had been made two or three years earlier and the way it was really supposed to be it could´ve been much better. The final product leaves a lot to be desired but the original script must have meant a lot to Prince since he still has some of the main characters names written on the walls of one of his studios at Paisley Park. The original storyline wasn´t that bad.But add to that a couple of years, a different zeitgeist, a stronger presence of HipHop in mainstream charts, fading interest in the purple universe and a muse like Ingrid Chavez, and you get something like Graffiti Bridge.

Even with those elements eliminated Graffiti Bridge sucked ass.

Prince should have hired a real director. He's a musical genius--even the hip hop elements don't mask that. But a great movie director? Oh hell no!

There are a couple of cracking tracks on there, a couple of crap tracks that I like anyway as a guilty pleasure, and a whole lot of dross.

But like (almost) any Prince album, it's worth listening to at least once.

Very well said. But I have to add a low point for me was watching the Arsenio Hall show when he performed Daddy Pop and there was a point when during one of his dances he slid through the legs of one his male dancers and his male dancing partner grabbed him by his little buns and pulled them towards his privates while gyrating in a circular motion. My guy friedns who were not big P fans just looked at me. I had nothing to say except Dhoh![/quote]

I have that on tape and is one of my most vivid prince memories because what I thought might be a chance for Prince to come back in Purple Rain like proportions was blown by this little homoerotic little thingy. He was always subtle at his best in gender bending, he sometimes went over the the limit and never worse than he did here. We know he's not gay, he knows it, why did he do something so stupidly provocative? Bound to backfire on him. As it were, it was not widely spoken about at the time, but we remember it don't we?

I respectfully disagree. I believe that this is one of Prince's best albums. The songs by other artists are perfect!

Who doesn't like "Tick, Tick, Bang!"?!? In the film, Prince dances at his best with this song.

Don't even get me started on "Shake"! One of my all time favorites.

At the time that GB came out it got good reviews, and I loved it too. From "New Power Generation" to "the Question of U" and "Joy in Repetition" I rank this album in the top 3 Prince albums to date. Since the time that I joined the org, GB hasn't gotten any respect. Yes, the movie sucked, but the songs are great. His collabos with The Time, GC, Mavis Staples and Tevin Campbell showcased his genius even more. Fellow orgers, tell me what you think.

I don't know but IMO I thought it should have come out before UTCM... just because the acting seemed more like it did in Purple Rain... kinda ... rough around the edges. But I have all three in my collection. I wish he'd release something else. I don't care about his acting skills, I just like to hear him talk. LOL

Okay, I decided that I needed to review each song to refresh my memory and determine if it really is a load of crap as so many think so here goes:

1. Can't Stop This Feeling I Got - crap
2. New Power Generation - aiight
3. Release It - The Time - some funky ass shit
4. The Question Of U - fucking classic
5. Elephants & Flowers - great song
6. Round & Round - Tevin Campbell - great song
7. We Can Funk - George Clinton/Prince - some funky ass shit
8. Joy In Repetition - fucking classic
9. Love Machine - The Time/Morris Day/Elisa - aiight (but has some great lines)
10. Tick, Tick, Bang - great nasty ass song
11. Shake! - The Time - aiight but not terrible
12. Thieves In The Temple - fucking classic (if for the percussion alone)
13. The Latest Fashion - The Time - aiight
14. Melody Cool - Mavis Staples - aiight
15. Still Would Stand All Time - beautiful music and lyric perhaps his best gospel song therefore somewhat of a clasic
16. Graffiti Bridge - crap

Based on my COMPLETELY scientific rating system, I've determined, IMHO of course, that only 2 out of the 16 songs were complete and utter crap, 5 were aiight, and the remaining 9 songs were good or even classic songs. Some of which are in my top 20 all time favorite Prince songs.

Now, of his recently released albums, although there are always some gems, there is no where near as many classics on the new albums as there are on GB. Say what you will, but this album had some of Prince's best work on it in the midst of some mediocre stuff. But can't that be said for ANY or ALL of his albums????
