Little Red Corvette or Dorothy Parker.

I think these two probably have the strongest lyrics Prince ever wrote. The metaphors of the Little Red Corvette and "pocket full of horses" are stunning. (To me, the best lyrics are always the ones I wish I could have written myself.) Of course, the song isn't really about love, but...

And Dorothy Parker is amazing, too. "She didn't see the movie cuz she hadn't read the book first." Bloody fucking brilliant.

I also think both of these songs are relatively accessible -- i.e., the references aren't too oblique. And they're more about the language, rather than any deep symbolism.

i read some years ago about a prof who gave her grad students the lyrics to if i was, and didn't tell them who wrote it. they apparently spent hours trying to figure out the exact nature of the relationship, and wether the person writing was straight or gay and male or female, and the same questions about the gender and orientation of the person the song is sung to.

they are damn good lyrics.
