dirty mind. he looks kind of insane, and the use of the boxspring is great.

i think in terms of his career, lovesexy is the worst, tho i don't mind it personally. (i remember buying the album on vinyl and thinking, no, i refuse to be embarrassed about this!)

i think a lot of guys in particular shied away from this album because of the cover and that is why it didn't sell well, and his career has never completely recovered.

cool i'll try to explain, i am as straight as straight gets, but this album cover is brilliant, it's not the male nudity as such, just the whole purity of the artwork.
i also love The Rainbow Children artwork

I agree about the cover and guys shying away. I remember getting made fun of while waiting in line for the Lovesexy Concert Tix.

Lovesexy didn't sell well due to a mirad of factors. Besides the cover, the fact it wasn't tracked, The lack of singles. Prince also didn't want to promote the album with videos either...until of course the first single had failed to do well on the charts. Sales were also messed up due to Prince insisting that the Lovesexy tour start in Europe (where he was hitting his peak) instead of the US, where he needed the strongest push for the album. By the time the tour got here is was beyond what Prince or anyone could do to save the album.

His career semi recovered with the Hits Batman and Diamonds and Pearls.

i thought the first single did well (alphabet st.). the video is one of my favorites, but i remember being shocked at how cheap it looked.

i know he's gotten some decent sales since then; i was also referring to his career in an artistic sense. his peak for me was '82-'88. after that, his work sounded a little compromised, like he was trying to record hits and follow trends instead of blazing new trails. that's not to say there isn't a lot to like post-'88. i just don't know if i'd call any of those albums great.

(sorry for the derail.)

Now don't get me wrong. I'm a girl and trust me, the Lovesexy cover is totally appealing to me, but I think I've found one better:

I love this. Prince looks really innocent and vulnerable.

The first single did OK. The video came out a bit after the single...and it's cheap looking style didn't help much.

The reason that after 88, things sounded a little compromised was because they were. Prince not only was not on top of his game anymore (more so in the public eye) but he had just rid himself of almost every single person who influenced his music as a whole.

SOTT was really a slapdash Dream Factory devoid of any of the contributors he had used that influenced the sound of the record. Most of SOTT was just left overs of 2 aborted projects. It sounds brilliant because it is, but more so because of it's ecclecticness. SOTT would not have been if not for the other collaborators he had at the time.

"The question is... how much more black could it be? And the answer is... none... none more black." razz

But for me, Lovesexy. Sure, I was embarrassed, too. But man, this cover made me really think about the music. And the music really made me think about the cover. Genius.

And to Purplestar88: The cover of Emancipation is my least favourite ever! What do you like about it so much???

biggrin I was just about to say the "Black Album" too. I love the little booklets that come with albums when you actually buy them instead of downloading them, but when I got the "Black Album" and pulled out this little black square of paper, I was actually extremely impressed. It just screams, "Don't worry about the cover art, because the music should speak for itself." Plus, I love the fact that you posted a picture of the album cover...bow The only other album covers that I actually have to say I love are, "Diamonds and Pearls", because of the pretty hologram (I like holograms smile ) and "Parade" (the soundtrack for "Under the Cherry Moon"), because the picture is printed sideways. Love it!

Are you serious? When I first saw that cover I thought it was a mistake. Looks like it was a protoype drawn up in 2 minutes as a placeholder until they came up with the real cover...

I think he may have lost as many potential customers with this cover as with Lovesexy - what was he thinking with that spandex suit? And the brades? And the pose? And the poor arrangement of the title? Oh, and the collection of songs he called an album? wink

When I first bought this cassette, I thought I could "protect" the prince by painting it with clear nailpolish. It melted the graphic right off it!!! I almost cried!
Then a bunch of promo stuff came in the mail- one of which was a prince sticker- so I bought an empty cassette case, put the sticker on it, and transferred the contents into it. It was so bootleg!!! lol Then I eventually bought the CD..... cool

I hated it, too! I couldn't understand why Mr. Hayes was backwards and had that awful hairstyle! confused
It looked liked something a high school girl did with her friends' pictures and taped to her binder. lol

Although I like the PR cover, I've always thought the image was too strong to be toned down by the flowers on either side. Wouldn't this have looked better?
