Joint 2 Joint - a great studio example of an underrated live skill of Prince's Prince has one particular talent that I don't really see in other artists, and I noticed it when listening to Joint 2 Joint the other day (although I've also picked up on it a lot on tracks like The Human Body, East and Controversy (Live in Hawaii)).
The talent is that he builds a groove, and just as you get used to it and think you know where the song is going, he switches the whole thing up on you, but somehow still keeps it united. He does this supremely in live shows, where it seems like he quickly grows bored of a groove and changes it to keep it interesting for himself (the 20+ minute version of 1+1+1=3 in Berlin is my favorite example of this, but he did it a lot with Gold-era grooves like Race, Now and Days Of Wild), but Joint 2 Joint is probably the most obvious studio example, because of the completely different styles in each section, from straight funk to tap-dance, to rap, to bass solo, to cereal-eating. Are there other songs that show this well, on record or in concert? Are there other artists that do this quite as well as Prince? If you haven't listened to Joint 2 Joint in a while, pull it out and show it some love here.

Joint 2 Joint is definately one of my favorites off of Emancipation. It's an incredible song that unfortunately got lost in the shuffle with everything else going on at the time.Hopefully, one day it will get some proper attention in a concert setting.Guaranteed to rock the house!

I guess - some people love that track, but to me it's always felt a little disjointed instead of cohesive. The changes don't feel as natural on this one as some others.

"Joint to Joint" has a flow to it... "Batdance" seems more like medley. I love "J2J" I shall listen now..... "Love Hurts. Your lies, they cut me. Now your words don't mean a thing. I don't give a damn if you ever loved me..." -Cher, "Woman's World"
