umm...doesn't everyone know he got a hip replacement? It's not a rumor I don't think... But yeah, about the dancing, you're takin it for granted! He's good at it, but ya know at 50 you can't meet all expectations. Just watch Sign o' the Times back to back to back if you miss the dancin so much thumbs up!

Who remembers when Prince didn't know how to dance? razz

Like it has been said before, between Controversy and 1999, P took some dance lessons. He must have been a practicing fool during that time period because prior to that, P looked like he was a part of the Rhythmless Nation.

I heard that he had hip surgery. Wearing heals constantly for years, especially dancing, damages the hips.

He sure didn't and it was great. He danced but it wasn't staged. He just basically danced however he was feeling the music at that particular moment.

thats not true Prince danced a lot especially on the lovesexy tour, the nude tour, diamonds and pearls tour, the symbol tour it was choreographed, and he even returned to doing splits on the love 4oneanother tour... mayb he should go to Yoga with Madonna and workout to "Love Song"

Uh when I said "earlier in his career" I meant pre-Parade. He used to be HEAVILY into the guitar onstage on his first few tours. Diamonds and Pearls, prince album, Lovesexy, were not "early" in his career. He'd been around 10 years when Lovesexy hit.

Another reason Prince may have toned down his dancing (especially at the superbowl) is that the general public often ridicules his prince signature twirls and splits as stereotypical of him.

He was said to have consciously edited his dancing style in Purple Rain as more RockNRoll to avoid comparison to Micheal Jackson at that time.

He got more into "Jackson" style choreography just past Lovesexy (although he did the dance solo in the spotlight in that tour and the opening antics)... I personally liked the "dance" shows like the lip synched Pussy Control performance, or Gold Medley....

HELLOOOOO !! I'm 52 and I still dance. Used to do the splits in high school but dropped off.
Prince's music style has evolved and the high energy dance movements and gymnastics just don't work. He's more mature. I like what he's doing including using back up dancers for the entertainment angle. This way he can focus on the music.

Exactly. I never really saw him do any what you would call "fancy" dance moves until the "Little Red Corvette" music video. Although, on the bootleg video of the "1999" tour, I did see him jump up and do a split in mid-air (kinda like David Lee Roth) during the song "Let's Work".

It makes me wonder if the hip replacement rumors are true. Oh well, it doesn't matter to me either way, I like Prince for the music and always have. All that dancing is secondary and thank God Prince wasn't too overboard with it like all these other entertainers these days. Since they don't have a damn lick of musical talent and can't play an instrument whatsoever, they need a stage full of choreographed dancers so the stage won't look so empty. I prefer an actual concert over a damn Broadway production any day.

clapping Amen to that!!!

I hear what you're saying, been following Prince since '81, so I've seen his "pimp walk" many times. For at least the last three years he's had a "limp" to his "pimp". I'm telling you, he's walking differently. It's all good, though. Hey, he's getting around just fine.

I too have been following Prince for more than 25 years and he does not appear to limp to me. I know that it is all a matter of perception. I don't know if the hip replacement rumor is true or not. (I just wish for health and happines for our boy). However, I was up close and personal with him at two 3121 aftershows and he wasn't limping at all.

I agree that he doesn't jump around on stage like he used to, but it would look a bit ridiculous at this point, because it doesn't fit his current style of music. IMHO

He still grooves to the music like he did earlier in his career. I think his career has come full circle. He is now back to focusing on the music first. He doesn't have to do all the theatrics to earn the moniker of "greatest live performer around." He's earned that with his many tours. So now he can wow us with his unbelievable musicianship. He is letting the music "dance" for him. I also think that Prince's stripped down shows are an intentional antithesis of these overproduced, overchoreographed shows that are standard now.

Oh yes it does. He's the only one these days that makes music uptempo enough to be jumping around on stage to. Everyone else's music is so damn slow they need to be waltzing to it. lol

Oh, don't get me wrong. P is still the funkiest man on two feet. Only a corpse can stand still to the funk he's putting down. I just don't think they're the kind of grooves that would allow for all the spinning, splits, jumping on speakers, etc. I think the groove is great for what he does now - groove. biggrin

I should have said that it doesn't fit his "style" now. He's not all wild on stage anymore. He's so much more laid back - the energy is still there, but channeled in a different way now. I dig it!!

Dude that's Prince's pimp walk and he's been doing it forever. It's part of his schtick.

Dunno about his pimp walk but he did injure his foot back in 98, don't know if there were any long term problems with the injury.
At a show in Atlantic City his foot slipped on a monitor due to condensation from a faulty smoke machine. He strained a ligament in his right foot and had to cancel some shows. Upon his return to the stage 3 weeks later Prince remarked "Even with a bad leg I'm still gonna kick yo ass tonight!".

R u sure about this? I believe having surgery is against JH religion. I definitely know having a blood transfusion is so I was under the impression he never had the surgery.

The last split I saw Prince do live was at "Jam of the Year." I am glad a caught one. I didn't see him live again until "Musicology."

He may be old, but I am amazed every time he does that squatting thing when he plays guitar.

I don't know where y'all get that he's old. The man ain't even quite 50 yet. He's still got another good 15 years left in him, and as good a shape as he's in, he's probably got 20.
