Prince is going to release a coveralbum next? lol I mean, so far we have:
- Johnny Be Goode - Proud Mary - All along the watchtower - Revolution (the supposed album-title, Beatles cover?) - The Best of You could be interesting

in my opinion ... it could be interesting ... especially if he chose stuff like the hendrix song and the foo fighters song .... which are NOT what you normally hear 20 X an hr on regular bullcrap radio ... i would hope he does NOT redue classic songs that we have heard alot of (like revolution by the beatles ) ... just my opinion ...

I think a cover album would be really well recieved at the moment. I say: why not? It's something he's never done before... could be interesting! Toejam @ Peach & Black Podcast: http://peachandblack.podbean.com

Any trivia buffs care to mention the two times he's made (very tenuous) lyrical references to Johnny B. Goode in past songs (I'll give you a clue - one an associated artist track from 1995, and one from 2001)? [Edited 2/5/07 7:01am]

[Edited 2/5/07 7:01am] Hmmm... Didn't he sample Michael J. Fox in Back To The Future introducing the song "this is an oldie" or something. Can't remember which song it was - something from the Gold era... Have no clue to the 2001 reference Toejam @ Peach & Black Podcast: http://peachandblack.podbean.com

ElectricBlue said Classic Rock
i agree that it would be neat to hear Prince covering somethin like that .... maybe even a LIVE album ... to mix it up alil ... speaking of classic rock ... its probably the only channel on normal radio that i listen to .... the classic rock ones ... but i am always perplexed that they wont play "purple rain" or Prince ... but they play lenny kratitz slow ballads or even "in the air tonight" by phil collins

Goode was sampled at the beginning of House Of Brick (Brick House) on Mayte's album Child Of The Sun. The 2001 track was on Prince's own 'child' album The Rainbow Children. During The Everlasting Now, Prince calls out to John Blackwell, "Johnny B. Well - bring the beat". Tenuous, I know, but the Johnny B. Well / Johnny B. Goode link must have been deliberate.

In my book he does well with covers. He finds something good about a song and exploits it. As only Prince can. I like his covers...usually...

he does well with covers
i totally do NOT think he has done well with covers ... my examples : One of us - orig by joan osborne .... hated Prince's version ... ewww Every day is a winding road- probably the single most pc of trash on that album ... ugh ... why remake something as One of us and this song --- that were recently popular ? ugh . the bonnie raitt song he did .. again ... bonnie did it soooo well ... on the flip ... when he tries to remake classic rock ... like johnny b goode ... or the foo fighters (altho i guess that is not classic rock yet) or the all along the watchtower ... i think he adds his funk to a good song ... enuf said ...

Went to see him in early December in Vegas. He did three encores. One was all covers -- Start Me Up by the Stones, Play That Funky Music White Boy, and some Rick James. Went again Jan. 20. Shelby did an awesome cover of Aretha Franklin's "Never Loved a Man the Way That I Love You." And Prince tore the Beatles' "Come Together" to shreds.
Whatever the genre, whatever the song, the man can kill it cold. Riverpoet31 said: I mean, so far we have:
