Last GREAT single? Cream?

What was Prince's last GREAT single? I'm not talking about good singles, because he has many, but last GREAT, as in, you were proud to have it played on the radio. I'm also not talking about his last great song, but last great SINGLE.

I say it is CREAM. If that is the case, it has been a sad decade. Please someone convince me otherwise.
The expanded version of my book PRINCE and The Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions 1983-1984 was released in November 2018. (www.amazon.com/gp/product/1538114623/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i0) or www.facebook.com/groups/1...104195943/

Are you Kidding Me ? Surely you mustn't have heard Last December or Everlasting Now. Check out The Rainbow Children and then you'll change your Mind about Cream.

problem is Prince doesn't know how to pick "singles" to promote albums.

for some odd reason he is in this thing of taking any song that caters to a 38 year old R & B fan?

Prince pick some rock cuts to pump a newly released album??

so yeah sad to say in the public and radios eye.. Cream was

But can you really count "The Last December" or "Everlasting Now" as singles? Have they been released? In their full glory -- radio promo, 12" maxi, remixes, video, etc. -- in the tradition of singles? Prince has not really released a single since The Greatest Romance Ever Sold... before that was The One and Come On. And none of them really had the PUNCH needed to push through the garbage on radio (payola scandal aside).

"The Most Beautiful Girl In THe World" not only was his last crossover hit, but if my nostalgic memories serve me right it also defined an era in music history itself. A major event. I guess to most people that single was FAR more important than "Cream". In fact if you ask a non-listener what Prince songs they think of first they'd probably name check "Purple Rain" and TMBGITW.

"I Hate U" (1995).

I went NUTS when I first heard this song on the radio. After months of listening to a poor-quality bootleg,it was nice to finally hear a clear version while driving to work in the morning.

Not that it has made a commercial release, or even made the album when Gold Experience was released, but I do think Days Of Wild could have been as big an underground success and had the same commercial appeal as Gett Off did. Perhaps it still could have if the funk was promoted by Prince's marketing - then Warners, and now himself. Both have failed somewhat in that respect!

Why can't he just send an extremely wild and funked out studio version of it to some influential, mainstream radio stations?! We know they'll all secretly love it!!

"The Most beautiful Girl". First No. 1-Hit in the UK. Remember?
Great Video, too.

Maybe "Peach", that was a good one, too. Played very often on MTV.

I think the last great single was "The Holy River". Pity it wasn't a hit. Before that, it would have to be "Gold".

Hm. I go with UMMSS - altho, you know, nobody gave a rats ass when it dropped. But that sure is a great song with some spirited performances from both Prince and Angie.

as sad as it is 2 say...Cream was the end..."sexy MF" did not impress me...depending on whether i was listening 2 the radio or my CD player all i heard was a lot of pointless scratching or lots of pointless swearing...nothing that involved tony m. could ever b considered great imho...speaking of which " eye hate u WAS great but never really broke 2 mass media, video and radio the way "cream" did

could it be "The Most Beautiful Girl In The World"?

I think so...The new songs from TRC don't count because of radio promo's. However, "She Loves Me For Me" is musically solid and a good promo song for the album...they're playing it here in the city on WGPR.

"The Most beautiful Girl In The World" influenced the production values on a lot of singles by other artists during the 90s. Mariah Carey was just one of them.

TMBGITW was cool, but CREAM was far superior. Sexy MF, while fun for most of it, contained too much Tony M. and so I don't qualify it as GREAT but instead, VERY GOOD.

Nothing off of Rainbow Children or any of the other albums lately have interested me as singles.

Tragically, it sounds like D+P was his last STRONG group of single releases and that was over a decade ago.

i became a prince fan after the 'new power soul' album was released, so before that i was just another music lover. and the singles that would always come to mind when thinking about the 90's prince/artist are:

-cream
-sexy motherfucker
-the most beautiful girl in the world
-gold

i didn't remember singles like 'get off' and 'diamonds and pearls' till after i bought the album sometime after 1998. i didn't even know '7', 'pink cashmere', 'peach' and 'i hate u' WERE singles till after i became a fan and did some research. so they did not have that much of an impact on non-prince fans at the time, at least not on me.
don't need no reefer, don't need cocaine
purple music does the same to my brain
i'm high, so high

I'm sorry you feel that way. To me "The One" was a great single. And it got quite a bit of airplay in 98. Before that, Gold was also great.

I've always hated, "Cream" It's just boring, to me.

I thought "The One" was great. "Gold." "7" was a kickass single, though. EVERYBODY loved that tune and NOBODY knew what the hell he was talking about.

OMIGOSH!! I forgot about "Betcha By Golly Wow"! That song is wonderful as well...a great cover 'cause he was singin' his heart out to the one he truly loved (at the time). I don't care y'all. Mayte and Prince and all songs created under her Muse will always be timeless for me...hence The Most Beautiful Girl In The World...

I'd go with Gett Off. I can remember where and when I heard this song. I actually pulled off the road and called the local radio station to find out when it would be released. They were surprised I knew it was Prince.

I said, "Who else would say 23 positions in a one night stand."

Oh and the extended video is off da hook. I almost like the house version better.

"Cream?" wtf

I hated "Cream" when it was a single.

I think the best single, that was actually played on the radio, was "Gettoff." The first time I heard it I was driving and I realized immediately it was Prince! I instantly loved the song and lyrics made me laugh! lol

I thought "Letitgo" was a great song.

Not in the annals of Prince, but 4 what was on the radio at that time.

I agree, this is one of the greatest songs/singles ever written,if it had been released to promote an album, the Gold Experience would have ruled the album charts for many a week. One of his biggest mistakes ever was to follow TMBGINW up with the COME album.

cream

I really hope y'all were kidding about this!

Gett Off was far superior as were later trax like 7 and LetItGo

Cream represents all that I hate about mainstream musicians and pop radio...one of the worst Prince songs ever and it's one of the songs he's most remembered for...

all of this is just my opinion, of course...
