Any vault songs that disapointed you?

What unreleased songs disapointed you after you finally got to hear them?
I remember hearing about "God is Alive" for years and when I finally heard it, it was a big let down. Same goes for "The P"

Schoolyard, Cookie Jar, and Soul Psychedelicide really sucked in my opinion. Also, everyone used to think The Grand Progression was one of the best ballads ever, but I thought the production in that song screwed it up, and thus lost it's emotional appeal. And I know people would think I'm crazy, but Electric Intercourse was weak...

Shit, the melody and the pure soul in P's vocals on Electric Intercourse R overwhelming, but yeah, Cookie Jar sucks BIG.

Pochacco

Mmmm not sure if it counts as a vault song or not?
Vavoom is certainly substandard and highly overated.

Much love yes Pochacco

I never thought much of All My Dreams - seemed very 'plastic' to me, and very cheesy.
Kind of like Kraft slices.

I simply cannot believe that people are baggin on Cookie Jar. That shit is too funky! Sounds like Prince created it in a haunted house. What a way to convert the original song into a song about God.

I downloaded Soul Psychodelicide this summer & thought it was great. That along with George Clinton & Prince on Brother Can U Paradigm? was played non-stop for weeks.

Without a doubt All My Dreams. It's ok, but it's not the classic that everyone claims it is. I don't understand being disappointed by God Is Alive though!

I adore Schoolyard and Cookie Jar. But sure, there are vault songs that I don't love (Get Blue comes to mind), just like there are non-vault songs that I don't love (Jughead comes to mind). The proportions are similar, actually.

OK Mr. Pretty Poison! wink Don't get me wrong, I do like "All My Dreams," but it has nothing on "Old Friends 4 Sale," "Extraloveable," "Moonbeam Levels" or 100 other Prince outtakes. It is often revered as possibly his best, but I like other songs of his way more!

We both has some questionable stuff we like, but Kylie is not! I'll admit that me liking C+C Music Factory, Karyn White, Richard Marx, Warrant, Poison and Whtie Lion is pretty lame, but who doesn't have guilty pleasures, Mr. Lisa Lisa and the Cult Jam? wink

I question everything about Kylie and your love for her. She's fishy and suspicious.

Where has she been? Where does get off getting popular for dance music? What is she all about? What makes her tick? What is it about her that you like? And what is it about you that makes you like her? How does one become obsessed with Kylie Minogue?

I fluctuate all the time about her but the more I know, the more I ease up on her and start to like some of her songs. It's just when someone is so far removed from what I like, I try my best to understand their appeal, especially if someone important in my life is getting into them. Thus, I want to give her a fair chance. But it doesn't come naturally. wink

That's fine! I can be the token Kylie lover of the Renner clan. She didn't go away- America did. I think it's great that she is a true dance artist- there aren't many right now. I like her insouciant attitude and her "girly" voice. I also love her rhythms. What is it about me that makes me like her? Apparently, I'm the gayest straight boy ever, so go figure! One becomes obsessed with Kylie Minogue realizing that someone so easy to underestimate has banned album covers, banned album titles and a horde of B-sides. I thought you already liked "More More More" and "Love At First Sight," as well as some stuff from "Light Years" and "Hits+."

I never understood what the big deal about "Cruicial" was. It's a good song, but not better than "Adore" or some of Princes other ballands.

When I lay my hands on U. I LOVE THIS SONG!!! But, to each is own.

i'll tell ya what disappoints me... when an outtake i really like is finally released officially. it just kills the song for me! this has happened many times, beginning when "joy in repetition" was released on GB.

now i LOVED joy in rep.. it used to freak me out completely. i'd turn the lights way down in my room, lie back on my bed and hit play. my scuzzy-sound cassette would hiss and crank up those beautiful echoing opening drums.. when it was over i had goosebumps all over, i'd sit up, press rewind, press play again...

then it gets its release on GB. now ok, P screwed up the intro by having all that "we can funk" detritus played over it... but still. you'd think i'd be happy with the rest of the song, right? cleaned up and perfect sound? happy, right?

wrong.

you know, it might sound perverse, but isn't there something wonderful about a bootleg? an illicit copy? with its imperfections and almost indecipherable elements? fuzzy, thudding bass ("wonderful ass" for example), or hi-treble lo-vocal mess ("feel u up" 1982).. exciting flickers from the purple underground!! garish tones and secret messages.. sometimes you have to listen so hard and sort of imagine what's missing, you have to work to complete the song in your head... sometimes it's just a case of loving the tone of the original crummy recording and being disappointed when the sanitized official version comes out- as with "last heart", "joy in repetition", "power fantastic"...

then too, i really dig the context of a song, so that "last heart" and "sexual suicide" sounded great to me in the context of the "crucial" bootleg on vinyl (a really super set of songs, people)- but when they're tucked away on that mishmash official release mess that doesn't even deserve the title "crystal ball", i shrug em off completely..

shucks, i dunno. let a boot be a boot is what i say! as soon as a boot is officially released it effectively kills the song for me... the song "crystal ball" itself... another one of my faves, rendered instantly indifferent by official release.. the entire black album (no, i never bought the official release, hell no! i still listen to my cassette, but am in the process of downloading each track from kazaa, thus retaining the bootleg element)...

of course, there are some great bootlegs in circulation which i've never heard. i don't mind it if i hear it on official release first, cos then i don't have my romantic scuzzy-toned boot with which to compare it. this happened with the song "dream factory". having never heard the song before i was truly blown away by the official release!!

i know there is a large element of falling in love with the first version you hear... same, i suspect, with cover versions. a lot of people tend to like whichever version of a song they heard first, ie whichever artist's interpretation of that song got them into it...

end of ramble, thanks for listening.

Grand Progression
Wonderful Ass
School Yard
A Place in Heaven
In All My Dreams
There is Lonely

I wouldn't call them disappointing. I would call them "overrated unreleased songs" or "suckass songs in the vault".

Stop it, you silly wankers.

Kylie is cool cuz she does not take herself serious.
She takes her work serious and her last two albums were the bomb. Her old work is indeed dubious. Except some things; like Confide In Me and Where The WIld Roses Grow. If Nick Cave likes her enuf, so should some other people...
Also, Ian is allowed to say these things without you pouncing him, Nathan. Don't make me come over and spank you.

Back to business. Soul Psychedelicide only has one groovy version. NOT The Revolution jam. NOT anything with Kim Basinger on it and NOT anything edited including "i wanna battle tonight", cuz those versions are LAME.
The only good one is the Mothership Version, with an almost non exciting Prince and the GC Crew to the fore. No discussion possible; if you do not like this version, something isn't right.
Cookiejar should not be disliked for it's late 80's sound, but celebrated cuz he plays a Parlets song! And groovy screams too!
All My Dreams is just plain weird, but I like weird.
So.

I have to say everything released through the NPGmc SUCKS big time except songs like Van Gogh and that rehearsel jam of Rebirth. And maybe the intro of the song where Prince screams and a voice goes 'scream one more time' and then he does. Kewl intro, the song SUCKED. All the songs were lame (LAME!) and uninspired. Shame on Prince for loading it onto you all. For not making an effort

Also, he should be b*tch sl*pp*ed for EDITING songs on The Crystal Ball. This is how he makes bootlegging NECESARY. His music deserves to be heard. Even if he does not think so, but I am going to put on my version of Soul Psychodelics with the unintended break in it and hope he never releases it because I like the bad quality. I dreamed of cleaned up versions of songs, but if he mixes people like W&L off songs like Dream Factory then I don't want that. Leave it! Respect yer own songs. Damnit!

Greetings,
Jeremy, Wannabe Keeper Of The Key To The Vault. Wannabe Producer Of The Next Instalment Of The Crystal Ball, That Of Course Cannot REALLY Be Called Crystal Ball, Cuz It Would Be Like Men In Black II, Sequals SUCK
I mean, I can still dream, right?

Oh, my real answer is;

I DETEST remixed versions of very good first tapings. Like Old Friends 4 Sale. I can understand that maybe the first version feels really personal to him, but the new lyrics SUCK big time. And the deliverance of the lyrics are strangled and over conceived. ZERO STARS for Prince re-recordings
Also, anybody that DARES to say that the released version of Come is BETTER than the original minimalistic version sucks too. No flame intended. Really.
And Rave.... must there be a R&B version to EVERY song?

*Gooey runs to recordplayer and puts on the GOOD version of Come*

BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
Come! You should do that baby...

I mean, they are HIS songs, I realise that. And honour that. But sometimes he just ripps up sumthing beautiful and than turns it into sumthing extremely silly.
I will NEVER understand the MIXING/FUCKING UP of the original intro of Joy In Repetition.

I know what he says when confronted with these questions.
"You are not supposed to buy bootlegs, naughty hamster."
And he is right, but I cannot change the fact that I am just a man, besides being a hamster and that I am prone to being naughty. And I just like his unreleased old stuff WAAAY better than most stuff he releases today. If that makes me something less, for not following him to the letter, than so be it.
