I'm Not Dissing Prince, But.... Some of you may have noticed that i'm not very impressed with what Prince has done lately.
For me it all started with the album 3121 the album it seems as though Prince is completely uninspired. The lyrics to the song 3121 are weak there is nothing on that record that has me wanting to hear it. Its in my Ipod and when I have it on shuffle and a 3121 song comes on I hit next. Then there is the club 3121 this is another bad idea in what seems to be a streak of them for Prince lately. I hate GA concerts so that has kept me away, if he doesn't have enough respect to provide a seat for some of his older fans, then I don't have enough respect to go and see him. I feel like I'm not missing anything with the predictable and boring setlist. When he said that the Musicology tour was the last time hits like Lets Go Crazy and Purplr Rain would be played I was all for it because finally he could start playing some stuff that never gets the time of day. Instead its the same old boring material Kiss, Lets Go Crazy etc. for somebody that claims he doesn't want to live in the past he certainly can't let go of the Purple Rain album. I understand that the show at 3121 lasts maybe 100 minutes tops and half the time he isn't on stage he has the twins covering the vocals of the best song of the set 17 days. What happened to the 3 hour concerts and playing until 6 in the morning??? Where is the Prince that made me believe there were still musicians out there that did what they did because they loved music. Where is Prince the fighter? the guy that wouldn't budge against music industry B.S. it is certainly not the man that I saw go on American Idol! Did Prince sell his soul to the musical Illuminati? What he has done in the last 2 years has shocked me and shaken my faith in him as a savour to music, the one guy that I thought would never cave to the dollar for the sake of music seems to be doing just that. I'm lucky that there still some other artists I can turn to when Prince travels down a road I can't follow. I still have David Bowie and PinK Floyd even though they are not doing anything right now I have the old cd's in my iPod to remember the better times. I guess that is all I have left with Prince are albums like Emancipation, Come, Gold Experience, Batman, and SOTT music that never gets the time of day at one of his current concerts. Some of my favorite music by Prince and when he seems the most inspired is the Jazz experimental stuff like Xpectation, C-Note, NEWS he seems to be at his happiest when he does this stuff I wish he would do more. Most musicians have to write music to please themsleves to be inspired, I wish Prince would do that because i'm not sure what the current crop of music is written for because he doesn't even seem to be diggin' it. 23 more days to Ball Dangle Day!!!!!

ya know what, prince has grown up, maybe u need to also.
i wasn't thrilled with the whole half time show, but everyone i know was. i think that because i am such a long time fan, i would've liked to see a different song list, but the casual person was blown away at what they saw for 13 minutes. . i won't see a vegas show, cause i admit, i am gettin old, an i don't wanna stay up till 10, then 5 or six in the morning... whatever. i'm glad he took the doo rag off durin purple rain, and i am still proud that he pulled off an awesome performance, i think i've matured my own way these last 26 years. and so has my prince!

Well if you read what i wrote I'm not into the 3121 album, I have been into Prince since around the world in a day, and there are eras of his career that i love but this particular era is not wowing me. Wouldn't you rather see him play for 2 and half hours and play some obscure stuff not the same ole Purple Rain and Kiss stuff. To me he seems uninpired, on the ONA tour he seemed happier doing the jazz thing, and Xpectation blows away Rave, Rainbow Children, Musicology, and 3121. 23 more days to Ball Dangle Day!!!!!

From the many reports I've read about the 3121 shows, I think you do Prince a disservice. Show times vary, but more often it is plus 2 hours (besides, 100 minutes would still be good for a completely live show these days, and you probably wouldn't be seeing an artist in Prince's league). Yes, he does a few hits occasionally, but much more of the setlist is filled with less-played material like Joy In Repetition, Anotherlover, a few new covers, and songs from 3121 (however since you don't like that album, I guess that won't convince you).
There are seats - but you do have to pay a lot extra for them. Plus, recently Prince has been jamming at aftershows after the main gig, in the restaurant, sometimes playing, sometimes just enjoying the music (still musicians out there that did what they did because they loved music) into the wee small hours. Perhaps this latest era is not for you, but I still think the Prince you prefer is around, or at least, bubbling under the surface.

This is the internet its my right to complain just as much as the next guy the only difference you guys are swallowing the swill he is giving you I am not. There seems to be a contradiction to what you wrote I can live the rest of my life never hearing anything from Purple Rain again. Many of the reports I have read even here have stated he only plays about 100 minutes with the twins doing alot of the vocals while he disappears from the stage. To me the setlist is boring and needs a healthy dose of the 90's and forget the 80's if he wants to play something new write something because 3121 and Guitar are lame uninspired meanderings. The after show according to the reports don't always happen. 23 more days to Ball Dangle Day!!!!!

Remember who you're dealing with! i didn't care for the last pink Floyd album but I loved the last Bowie album. Don't assume that I should like 3121 I never listen to it the album bores me. Maybe Prince should start releasing the vault of music It was one of the reasons for leaving WB to be able to release more music but since then it has been about an album a year the same as it would have been with WB just another Prince contradiction in the long line of many. 23 more days to Ball Dangle Day!!!!!

LordEvil- listen I understand what you are saying. You prefer a less "commercial" Prince. However, the dude has always had one foot planted on the independant/underground/f' the man/musician side and the other foot planted on the tv show/pop music/top ten/ mass appeal side.
You yourself listed "Batman" as one of your fav's--to me that was, and always will be Prince sellin' out the hardest. Prince dressed up as Batman and doing shows with a giant Bat logo behind him? Being part of the most hyped WB movie ever? Very corporate, very commercial, yet still one of your favs. Bottom line: Prince does what he wants when he wants. Sometimes he wants to play for 100 people at Paisley Park from 3AM to 6AM, sometimes he wants to play for a billion at the Superbowl for 13 minutes. Remember before Dirty Mind, he was Mr. Teen Beat cutesy "I wanna be your lover". All in all it's about balance and variety. If Prince was not to change it up then I would worry. Sometimes he's commercial, sometimes he's not. You prefer Prince as a "cult artist" that's all yours and right now he's not. Sorry. "New Power slide...."

Well again you are missing my point through your own assumptions, I liked almost everything he did in the 90's and he seems to forget that decade, then states he will no longer play the hits and then all he plays are mid 80's hits and forsakens everything else. I like the music of Batman but could have done without the costume. However my point is this I think as a musician he is most inspired when he is playing jazz he writes better now adays in that mode. He seems happier live when he is doing jazz. The pop music he writes now seems forced and uninspired, and my point is I think alot of people including myself would appreciate if he just wrote to please himself rather than to have a pop hit in a market today that is dominated by uninspired teens with cookiecutter producers trying to satisfy and please the program directors of Clear Channel. 23 more days to Ball Dangle Day!!!!!

I'm sure Prince would like to sometimes get away from Purple Rain, Kiss, etc., but what happens to the casual fan...who just recently went and bought/downloaded his entire 80s catalog, has heard all the stories of how awesome he was and still is live...you know, they want to hear Purple Rain live to see if they get goosebumps and all that.
Bottom line is you can't please everyone.

I liked TRC better than Musicology and 3121 so I see your point a little but if you have not heard Black Sweat live yet, you have not heard one of the best funk grooves of all time. The Word is also one of my all time favorite Prince songs and I've been following his music for 20 years.
Having said that, the last album to really blow me away by Prince was the Gold Experience. Bob Dylan released one of his best albums ever last year. Perhaps Prince will do the same this year. Meanwhile, I'm very pleased with 3121 and Guitar.

Unless one of us here is Prince, I don't think anyone posting here has any basis for asserting when Prince's writing is "most inspired" or "least forced" or is designed to "please himself" or that he's "happier live when he is doing jazz." So often, we project our own views and feelings as his, when we really shouldn't. Or we claim to know what's in his head, when we can't possibly know.

The happiest I ever saw him was on ONA he really seemed to enjoy what he was doing since then he seems to be going through the motions. 23 more days to Ball Dangle Day!!!!!
