any good books?

I'm kind of a new fan and I'd like to read a good biography that covers Prince's early life like his troubled childhood and such, if one exists. Any suggestions?

try "Prince - The First Decade" by Per Nilsen. www.helterskelterbooks.com
jam it on the power of the 2 and 4!

prince has had many bios written about him, though i wouldn't say that many of them are terribly good. from all the bios i've read, the coverage of his youth is pretty much the same from book to book. the easiest to find is probably "possessed" by alex hahn, which i think is the most recently released bio from a mainstream publisher.

my favorite prince book is "DMSR", but it's more about his relationship with his music...still a really great read.

My favorite "old" book about Prince has always been Prince: A Pop Life, by Dave Hill. 1989

nod
With a title like "DMSR", the funk in the air really helps set the tone.

I paid full price for that book and it's a waste. She never quotes ANY of the sources in the book, and half of them are straight from the Oprah interview, and some from the Chris Rock interview. It's a collage of the already-known. I think "DMSR" from Per Nilsen is great, and an old fave is Dave Hill's "Prince: A Pop Life".

I liked "Possessed: The Rise and Fall of Prince" by Alex Hahn. I also liked "Purple Reign - The Artist Formerly Known As Prince" by Liz Jones.

DMSR is best. Only read it last year, there's loads of stuff you don't get in any others. I'd never heard of "Wally", The Rebels, and there's a great description of Prince alledgedly off his face on Ecstacy

BTW 3121 i'm a big fan of the beautiful, lushly orchestrated ballad 'heaven is suckin off a stranger in a skanky public toilet' as well. Heartbreakingly poignant.
