'Best Of You' - Prince covers the Foo's Ok, let me start by saying that I like hockey..... Now, I am not very fond of Prince doing covers but I understand he had to choose some songs that would appeal to a 140 million audience, given the fact that some of his lesser known (to the public) music of his own repetoire would probably not do the trick! But why 'Best Of You' from the Foo Fighters? I think he should have left that one alone.....it's a great song but it's just one genre too far away from Prince. I probably would have loved it if it were his own. Doing a bit of research today, I stumbled on this.....here's what Prince had to say about covers, especially the Foo's, back in 2004: But ask him if he's heard the Foo Fighters' version of "Darling Nikki" and Prince, who a minute earlier said he never listens to the radio ("When I want to hear new music, I go make some"), replies by describing a Hawaii DJ's response to the Foos' cover. The DJ wondered if Prince had heard it -- then said he couldn't care less if he had. "Just no respect," says Prince. "I wonder if that's the kind of thing the FCC would like to clean up, too." So...does he like the cover? "No! I don't like anyone covering my work. Write your own tunes!" He says he got up in R&B singer Ginuwine's face for bungling the lyrics in a 1996 version of "When Doves Cry." "I was just busting on him to bust him, but I was a little serious: Have some respect, man. If anyone tried to cover 'Respect,' by Aretha? I would shoot them myself!" - Entertainment Weekly '04 What do you think??? [Edited 2/5/07 11:40am]

Yeah, I saw that after watching the Superbowl. I was surprised. Does Prince like the Darling Nikki cover now?
I don't get what Prince is saying anyway... He did covers on Emancipation (way before this interview). Is he saying that that was a mistake? Do these rules apply to everyone else and not to him? And regarding bungling lyrics... Prince switched the lyrics on "One of us" (he changed slob to slave)... [Edited 2/5/07 11:28am]

Prince was asked if he 'dug' the foo's around the time of emacipation. It was also asked if he would like to collaberate with them seeing as they had covered some of his songs. his reply 'I dig their volume, i am open to any collaberation as long as its a positive one. who would own the masters?'

This question came up as soon as he gave that copy to Howard Stern. I guess he's gotten over the Foo's cover. Granted, that interview didn't seem like he had a problem with the Foo Figthers so much as he didn't like being covered without being asked. At least that was my take on that interview and what he'd said to Alicia Keys a few years back. Of course no one has to ask him just to cover a song, but it seems like he'd prefer to be asked.
I'm curious if he ran it by the Foo's before he covered them, or if he figured they owed him one. "What kind of fuck ending is that?"

There is a reason that the Foo's cover of "Darling Nikki" was not on their album and a very limited b-side.
Seems that Prince and Dave talked about it and Dave respected Prince's wishes. Later Cause tomorrow is taking too long
and yesterday's too far away and the reality that you believe in begins to bind.
