any guesses on how prince manages to F up a big opportunity like the super bowl?

ok, so we all know prince is great at sabotaging himself. He's bragged about the record he was "born to make" and then handed out emancipation. he's released hit records followed by no support in either interview form or tours. let's not forget changing his name to the symbol and writing "slave" on his face. the list goes on and on.

so, how will prince screw up this big opportunity? 140 million viewers plus 70,000 people in attendance...how's he gonna blow it? or will he?

For the most part, Prince plays it pretty safe these days. He's had more successes in the public Eye than misses lately. Most of the missteps are kept quiet and out of the general public eye. I think today will be just fine.

Was thinking the same thing last night after watching a replay of the 2004 Grammy's with Beyonce which, in my opinion, re-launched him.

Honestly, I think as long as the twins are involved, it won't go well. I watched these two dance at the SB press conference and they were just a distraction waving the hair and dancing horribly.

I think he'll play a few hits but throw in a new song which no one will want to hear thereby leaving everyone thinking....it was OK. I am curious about the marching band though and how they will be used.

There really isnt anyway to screw this up, outside of doing something that would involve being censored. Prince is not on that "train" anymore, so dont expect a "Gett Off" type performance. Im sure he'll do some kind of hits medley toss in something new, basically showing "mainstream" america that he is still alive. Cause to "mainstream" america they really havent heard anything from him since the "Musicology" era when he was on everything 24/7. So this is just another 2004 for me, this performance will be much like the grammys that year with many other things to follow.

He could f*** it up for me (personally) if he plays Lets go crazy and Purple Rain again. It was great at the Brit Awards but i hope he will choose something surprising this time. Not just the old hits again.

To be honest, I don't think that Prince has ever F'd up a big time performance/opportunity. He's a consummate performer and he always brings it. Sure, he may not do the expected or what his fans want, but when it's time to take the stage he always comes through. Even when he is on cruise control he's still the man onstage.

NAACP??? Are you talking about the BET Award Show?

Yeah, performing 3121 at the BET Award Show was not a good move IMO. It didn't translate well on tv either.

To be fair, the BET Award show has a fraction of the viewership of the Superbowl. The MAIN thing Prince did was the Chaka Tribute. Playing 3121 was just icing on the cake as the show went off of the air. The performance was fine. Definitely NOT a f' up per se.

11 minutes of preaching about dead blood killing interferons, last names and slavery, and the meaning of the syllable 'con' in a 12-minute performance would qualify has a major F up, I guess.

He'll play a bunch of stuff from 1984 in front of millions of people, and then the people will say, "See, I knew it -- he still hasn't done anything great since Purple Rain; why else does he keep playing these old songs?" (yawn) They'll dismiss him once again as a washed-up has-been or just another whacked-out cult leader trying to recruit a few more idol worshipers. He'll probably even perform on a gigantic stage shaped like the occultic symbol that he's adopted as his own. My suggestion: no old material -- rock out on guitar SNL "Fury" style and/or perform some message songs that are relevant for today. People will be interested then. "That was right on!! What song was that?! Is that his new stuff? Where can I get that album?! Is he on tour?" imho

I disagree. I understand what you are saying, but I disagree. Most of the general public doesn't care if the hear the "new stuff". They aren't into Prince enough to add a judgement about Prince not "doing anything great since Purple Rain". I do agree that Prince should do a mix of new and old, but the whole 1984 argument doesn't wash with me. He did a 1984 medley for the 2004 Grammy's and that turned out fine.

People need to realize that Prince has a 30 year back catalog and the general public would be dissappointed not to hear "purple rain". I am not saying he shouldn't do new material, but no everyone views Prince as we, the hardcore fans, do.

I'm sorry, but all of you who are hoping for him to not do Let's Go Crazy or Purple Rain... you are going to have the biggest egg on your face when he plays those songs and nails them perfectly.

I get so annoyed when people think it is a failure when Prince plays his biggest hits such as Let's Go Crazy and Purple Rain. Every artist plays their biggest hits now and again, and such hits is why he has been hired to play at the Superbowl. In the middle of those two, he is likely to be playing the Watchtower/best of U song which is as an eclectic move as Prince has ever made, yet people will no doubt focus on Prince playing his signature tunes again. That's what the masses want, expect, and will enjoy. Doesn't change the size and depth of his back catalogue and the songs we know he could do or has done in concert other than his major hits. Play a load of songs the public has never heard of and they'll not be going, wow, he is a current major act again, they'll just be going huh? I wish he'd have played Purple Rain.

He could do a long speech about Jehovah, the end of times and the evils of the mass-media, before performing an abreviated version of 'Te Amo Corazon' and storming off the stage and out of the building.

As for f*cking it up, he could always bring out Larry Graham or do shout-outs to the latest incarnation of NPG band members.

I still have hopes he will do a greatest hits tribute featuring the Revolution, Sheila E., Candy on sax, etc... Hell bring back Sheena Easton to do "U Got the Look" and Rosie for "Diamonds & Peals" or how about Cat or even Mayte for christ's sake! (They were better dancers than the twins, you have to admit... hell, even Diamond and Pearl were far better!) I suppose the days of him sliding underneath a girl and ripping her dress off are gone, huh? And no more splits, right? Geez....
