OK, 14 hours after downloading the song, I have FINALLY listened to it! (I downloaded at work, where I am not allowed to listen to music) Here is my review...
At first listen, I really like it. "Guitar" reminds me of other songs/styles that I enjoy, and puts a new spin on them. Prince definitely has his own unique brand of pop. The chord progression reminds me of Filter's "Take A Picture." The chorus does remind me of "Back in the USSR", like many other people have said. The subtle backbeat makes me nostalgic for "When You Were Mine", and other 80's pop goodies. The guitar solo is fun, and light hearted, with a bit'o'sass. It definitely sounds like something that a young, playful Prince would write. What makes it sound updated is the distortion put on the vocals and guitar. The distortion reminds me of a few songs off of Crystal Ball. The one that instantly came to mind was "Da Bang". I would love to hear the song without the distortion, so a live performance would be nice. The only beef I have with the song (and it's a small one), is that there are too many syllables in the phrase "But not like I love my guitar." If he took out one syllable, it would flow much better into the chorus. Maybe he can take out the "but", because we would still know what he meant. What's really funny is that the ending ran right into "Head" on my iTunes playlist. It was quite the medley! [Edited 2/3/07 8:43am] Wanna hear me sing? www.ChampagneHoneybee.com

Ok, so name the black pop or r&b legends? There are almost none in the modern music era who last more than a year or two. A very wise black DJ (Boogie Slim) once told me "R&B comes and goes, but Rock and Roll will never die". He was talking about how rock DJ's had an easy job because they could just play old records at their gigs, but R&B DJ's had to constantly buy records. I'm definately of the mind Prince could be a stadium rocker, even now, because of his talent on guitar. But, he keeps putting out laid back pop and behind the curve R&B. He's an amazing talent live and if he'd bring that energy back into the studio, he could quickly be back on top, if that's what he wanted I suppose. I LOVED the Hendrix/Foo Fighers mashup and I was hoping he was ready to "bring it", finally! I thought the same thing when I saw Fury on SNL. He can do it and I guess I can hold out hope that the new song is just the b-side we've all been asking for and that the real stuff is on the way... I was at the Tower records gig last year. This guy could be the black Steve Tyler and rock into eternity. (the dawn?) Of course, he's better than Tyler, but you get my point. Instead, he's more likley the black McCartney, which is nice too, just not as fun.

i like it alot. i was expecting something with a lot of rock n roll guitar in it and instead was surprised with a pop song. its very fun. if it was mixed in on a full length album, people would think it was awesome. but instead people thought they were getting fury part two and feel disappointed. for $1.99 maybe we should have gotten at least a bside also. two tracks like black sweat te amo on itunes. but i am not disappointed at all with the song.

How about James Brown he had a 50 year carreer and more than a few hits. Don't get me wrong I love Rock n Roll. I just don't see a Rock and Roll audiece digging a whole lot of black dudes

its funny to hear people bitching about $1.99... I waste a $1.99 for a cup of shite coffee from starbucks every morning... for a pretty nice descent song that I will listen to a good couple of times before I die, I think it's a good investment... Prince fans find everything imaginable to complain about... Change it one more time..

so you are saying it is somehow wrong to have expectations? when you buy chocolate, ar eyou wrong to expect it to be tasty. hen you buy a book, are you somehow wrong tp expect it to be entertaining? life must be very boring for you if you do not have expectations about anything and just accept things as they are. or if your poition only applies to Prince, you are simply a hypocrite. either it is okay to have expectations absolutely or it isn't. this message brought to you by logic.

It's a fun little song that sounds pop on record but that can be given a more ferocious treatment on stage. Reminds me of a bunch of his songs. It's a good addition to his catalog, nothing earth-shattering.

I find it amazing how quick people are to shit all over this song. And complain about $1.99?? come on...
I like it. It's much poppier than I expected, but I should've known better. I can only assume this song was put up now so that the masses who see him tomorrow can go and buy a new track ASAP. It's definitely top 40 radio friendly. Ask where they're going, they'll tell U – "Nowhere"

I think he's a musical genius who's at his electrifyingly best on songs like Purple Rain, Let's Go Crazy, Little Red Corvette, U Got The Look and recently Fury (live) and All Along The Watchtower/Best Of You. I think he's got the ability to create a legendary rock album that could outsell any artist on the planet, even at 50. He just doesn't seem so inclined. I do have doubts, but then he comes up with the SNL performance or his guitar on My Guitar Gently Weeps and I'm fully convinced all over again. Oh, almost forgot Beautiful Strange! Jeff http://jeffreyanderson.blogspot.com I'd hate to see your whole list. Ditto. I'm all for respecting opinions, but I'm at a loss to see how Prince fans could find any meat on this track. There's no time changes, nothing but a basic groove chasing after Andre 3000's "Hey Ya" and failing MISERABLY at the task. The guitar solos are technically sound but lacking in any emotion or intensity (not to mention incredibly short) and the lyrics are so trite, tired and hamfisted that I seriously wonder if that area of his craft isn't completely dry. Granted, lyrics were never his strongest area, but heavens, this track's lyrics are 8th grade at best. Hopefully this is just an internet single for his fans, a chance to hear a throwaway and is not foreshadowing of his next release. Although after the tripe that was 3121, I don't see any real reason not to think this isn't his current musical direction. Still number one live but couldn't be any less relevant on record these days, it's kind of sad to see just how far he's fallen. I thought around the time of the Rainbow Children he was gearing up for a new musical rebirth, but he's not only treading water since then, he's drowning with sacks of cliche tied around his neck. No hard feelings.
