I guess I'm stuck right in the middle with this one. I don't really like the drum track though, especially the boomy bass drum.

Very disapointed...I could have spent my 1.99 on something else. I hope it grows on me. After 26 years as a fan, this was the fist time I was disappoint right out of the box.

I don't hate it but I certainly don't love it either...y'all know I'd say so if I did!
All I can see is him playing this at the Super Bowl with the Twitch Twins in tow and everyone at my Super Bowl party glaring at me with that... "You made us stop partying for THIS?" look on their faces and me wanting to hide!

Anyone outside the US been able to purchase this song yet? Just tried and the system seems aimed at US customers, requiring a US phone number. Even when I just try and fill in some numbers, I just get a red 'duplicate' message at the bottom the meaning of I can't understand. Grrrr....

It sounds like 'If I Could Get Your Attention' with a little 'Girls & Boys'/'Lolita' thrown in.
It's a funky grower. I like it! “Tuna, you better do something or else we gonna have to put you back in the can!”

yeah me to - dying to hear it - even though the opinion of it on here isnt very positive! lots of his songs take time to grow on me for some reason! I'm starting to think the chorus should say:
" love U baby, but not like love my programmed plastic drum loops" Be nice if he used a real drummer (hey, Prince, just a reminder: YOU CAN PLAY DRUMS!) instead of more computerised loops just to get it finished quickly.

this song suits him and has that princey feel to it 10 out of 10 from moi!!! 'Ive never been 1 2 hide my feelings, Baby, u blow my mind I painted your face upon my ceiling, I stare at it all the time...' http://www.myspace.com/welshmess

Yes I got it and I'm in the UK. I think the thing to pay attention to when trying to download it is to check the box "international customer" and leave blank the state and zip code fields then you should be OK. Of course you'll also need to set up an account - the old NPGMC one does not work anymore and also therefore no NPGMC discount which considering it's already $1.99 is a bit disappointing - AND of course UK banks these days love to add an overseas purchase surcharge to debit card transactions of around £1 or more so it the final price in the UK will be about £2! May be better to pay with a credit card rather than debit card for this sort of thing. Oh, and the song is not a rocker, which in hindsight is not surprising knowing Prince, but it is a grower and has an old Prince quirky feel to it which I like anyway!!

this song suits him and has that princey feel to it 10 out of 10 from moi!!! Yep a poppy Prince ditty. He spins these out so effortlessly. Nice song not what we were expecting but its not like that is something new when it comes to P. Prince is everything - pop, alternative, funky, rock, spiritual you name it...I don't know how so many can call themselves fans yet not embrace the fact that he covers so much ground. He gave you rock obsessed fans fury...now move on Dance... Let me see you dance

sosgemini said: no itunes? i really dont feel like dealing with 3121.
I understand where you're coming from, but the 3121 purchase page is MUCH simpler than the old NPGMC one. You just have to make sure to have a nonalphanumeric symbol (i.e. !@#$%^&) in your password. As far as I can tell, there is no DRM embedded into the MP3. So you can just put it into iTunes.

Se7en said: I like the concept of the song - to me it reminds me of Kenny Rogers "She Believes In Me" (don't laugh until you listen to those lyrics). They sound nothing alike, but the story is very similar.
I don't like the way Prince tries to wrap up his lyrics with a small little bow. Meaning, he says "I love you, but not like I like my guitar". End. He doesn't leave anything to the imagination. I would've liked Prince to do something more like this: Baby you know, it's you I adore but my guitar, it needs me more You tell me you can see we're fallin', fallin', but my guitar keeps on callin', callin' CALLLLLINNNNN!! (Prince scream) Blazing guitar solo THAT woulda been AWESOME! You just gave me an idea. Why don't we try to write or rewrite songs we would have liked to hear, in a Prince style. Funky but full of blistering lead guitar... The problem nowadays is that the guys who can rock can't funk and there ain't nobody who can funk no more... Some people tell me I've got great legs...

May be better to pay with a credit card rather than debit card for this sort of thing. Just managed to download it. It didn't seem to like my Visa credit card, so I changed to a visa debit card and it worked first time! Never had a problem with my credit card with the old npgmc system... odd. Of course, had to fill in the phone number with some random numbers, which is a bit of bad design on their part for international customers, and I've never come across a password that needs a 'non-alphanumeric' in it to work before! As far as the song goes, pretty basic stuff from Prince, a song that wouldn't sound out of place on The Chocolate Invasion and Slaughterhouse and Musicology, kind of tame and lacking depth lyrically, musically and rhythmically. The guitar just gets going at the end and then... cuts off. Perfect time for Prince to let loose with an extended solo, but no. I spent the last few days pointing out to people that they were likely to be disappointed building up expectations of what this song would sound like in advance, and I was right. This song is crying out for some guitar in the chorus bit so much it is hard to fathom what Prince was thinking of in the studio not to put it in. [Edited 2/3/07 7:43am]

I'm starting to wonder if he has some kind of mental block with recording an actual rock song in the studio. This sounds like something that would have been quaint on an outtakes album. ----- Do you guys really think anyone outside of hard core fans are going to buy a rock record from a 50 year old black man?

If "Fury" had been available as an iTunes download after the SNL performance, you'd have no thought of posing this question. He can bring the rock. It's just a matter of making it accessible to the listening public - and those beyond the confines of the org and housequake.

What, now or then? Funny thing is, back when Purple Rain broke that is exactly what he was known for by the public, a straight rocker. Two decades of eclectic music has diluted that - but it would only take a few rock performances to be accepted as a black guy playing rock and roll, as the While My Guitar Gently Weeps performance clearly showed, he had people everywhere raving about that.
