"Guitar" is Prince lacking any new ideas, musically or lyrically. As on Musicology, 3121, and other tracks released around this time, Prince truly seems to have run out of inspiration, preferring to imitate himself if it means commercial success.

As Prince fans, I think we need to ask ourselves: How badly do we want Prince to re-tap into his creative core potential and how much does our burning desire make us convince ourselves that uninspired releases are the real deal?

I love the drums... This is such a tacky, cheap pop-song... marvellous. Beautiful, throw-away Prince.

I just love it how all the musical geniuses on this site have so much advice for Prince. I can't wait to listen to your sonic masterpieces.

Hey either you dig the song or you don't. However, the fact remains that the vast majority of people lack the requisite talent and/or musical knowledge to tell Prince what he needs to do musically. You are giving advice based on your own particular musical tastes, which is completely subjective.

Why does Prince need a producer? To sound like everyone else? To top the charts? To create the kind of music that you want to hear from him? Stop trying to restrict him to your expectations. Let him be free to be an artist and create what HE wants to create. Like I said, either you dig it or you don't.

Why don't you just stick to what you like or dislike about "Guitar?"

Finally, stating that Timbaland has changed the landscape of music is a bit of an overstatement. He has definitely had an impact on pop music, but IMHO it has not been a positive one.

Yeah, absolutely. That whole spiel of questions you did, I totally see your point. Prince is what he wants to be and nobody needs to tell him otherwise. I respect him as much as I do because he does everything his way and it is so dedicated to his music to make it sound the way he wants it to and always makes it work for him, regardless of what everyone else says.

Okay, I've listened to this song several times now. At first, I didn't know if I liked the song or not, but it seems to be growing on me a little. The lyric that I think is funny is when Prince sings something like, "I'll write a letter, as soon as I learn how 2 spell." lol This is a great cruising in your car kind of song, with the volume turned up, and your windows open.
RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

sounds like a cute outtake ...but not even close to the level of some of the unreleased outtakes floating around...If this is a new direction i am sure i will not be playing his new stuff in heavy rotation just like 3121/musicology/or any of his 90's output ! Thank God for file sharing !

sorry??? i mean, its 1,99 - so you want to beg others to give you the song for free because you don't want to spent 1,99 - i think its ridicolous!!!

Actually, demanding $1.99 for a crummy 192k mp3 of a song that's medicore at best (and I'm being immensely generous by describing it that way) is ridiculous. If that was the price for TWO LOSSLESS TRACKS plus artwork, then I'd agree. And even then I'd still demand to be able to listen to a lo-fi clip.

netzverwalter said:

if you don't want to spent it then you should wait, till the cd is out - which i believe will never be - because in my opinion this is not a first single of a fourth-coming cd - just one song (to make a little money and to test the new 3121.com functionality - which went wrong in my opinion)

That's because Sam Jennings and co are still clueless idiots (and Prince is greedy).

So what? a) Timbaland is ridiculously overrated and b) TRC isn't good at all, unless you like that pretentious funk-jazz-rock-soul muso crap.

Is Steve Vai one of the most accomplished guitar players ont he planet? From a technical viewpoint, perhaps. Is he a great artist? Hell no.

The guitar solos are technically sound but lacking in any emotion or intensity (not to mention incredibly short) and the lyrics are so trite, tired and hamfisted that I seriously wonder if that area of his craft isn't completely dry. Granted, lyrics were never his strongest area, but heavens, this track's lyrics are 8th grade at best.

No offense intended but, this is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard on here. Prince is one of the most prolific songwriters of our time.

"Prolific" indicates quantity. He was talking about quality.

And IMHO Prince has written plenty of clunkers; Some good ones, yeah, but lots of his output is embarrassing. "Guitar" is certainly awful. One half-assed idea and that's when he stopped writing.

I know, right? Why is it that the people who are so negative against Prince see fit to insult the people who have something positive to say? I don't understand that. Why are people who like his newer material disparagingly called fams or fanbots, whereas the negative people who want to limit P's music to their myopic expectations view themselves as so "enlightened?"

Oh yeah? http://dictionary.referen...e/prolific Don't make up definitions, prolific CLEARLY is about QUANTITY.

Oh, and not knowing what prolific means doesn't have anything to do with grammar, but with vocabulary.

So let's see you were wrong in the first place, and when you tried to cover that up, you made something up and then you made another mistake that reinforces your first mistake. Congrats!

Even if I liked this song, I'd still would have said that he must be deaf. Guitar sounds NOTHING like his 1980s work, no matter how many fans are echoing that baloney in this thread.

bellanoche said:

Because you lot say stupid things like "just another classic" over and over again about songs that you will have forgotten about six months from now.

bellanoche said:

Clueless as usual. The ONLY "limits" I impose on Prince's music is that he stops making crap that only references his other crap, and that he starts making interesting music again. I'd heard 10 seconds of DOW and back then in 1994 I instantly knew: Prince is back. I was halfway through Dinner With Delores and I realised: he's definitely gone. Has Prince released some okay ditties post-1995? Sure. Any classics? Hell no, and Prince himself agrees: he himself doesn't play any of the post-1995 stuff anymore, except on rare occasions. When he tours these days, he barely promotes his current release.

Accusing me of being myopic? Must I hear this crap every time one of you johnny come latelys disagree with the opinions of fans who've been right over and over again?

Dude- see here: "The adjective prolific has 2 meanings:
Meaning #1: intellectually productive". http://www.answers.com/topic/prolific
and btw, there are better places than the Internet to learn vocabulary definitions.

I am not wrong and I have never made up a definition- although it appears you feel you have the right to limit words to the definition that works for you. Like it or not, you are wrong. And I will say again- I DO NOT NEED ANY TYPE OF ENGLISH/GRAMMAR AND/OR VOCABULARY LESSONS FROM YOU.
