I really like it - has a fun, breezy style.
I don't know what some of you were expecting, but I get the feeling that some people were holding onto unreasonably sky-high expectations. I was hoping for a good song, and I got one - It's a fun track with way better lyrics than the majority of songs on the last album. The only thing troubling for me is the fact that I've liked both SST and Guitar more than anything on Musicology or 3121. [Edited 2/4/07 10:20am] I've seen the future, and boy it's rough...

Rockability said: Ok, after having a couple days to listen over the song and with a fresh state of mind (instead of F5 a page for an hour waiting for a download) I believe 100% that this song is utter garbage. At first I thought I liked it, but I just couldn't believe a song titled "guitar" would suck. Not that I cared if it was rocking, cause I didn't. But to have a title of "guitar" you better bring something, no you better bring all you have.
I could see Prince writing "guitar," laying down the tracks and recording in about an hour. I could see my ten-year-old brother doing the same if he had a multimillion dollar studio. It's seriously lazy music. Prince is lazy. His music is so uninspiring. I hate his new stuff. I still consider myself a fan because of his first five albums, however. I think you're going to far with your criticism, but besides that, I basically agree. It IS kind of lazy. Which is alright, if you can do music that way and put is out from time to time - fine. But if you're last album is a year old and that's the first song you put out after it...and the thing is, you just KNOW he has better (new) stuff gathering dust.

I knew I'd lose people with the Musicology/3121 remark. I still don't think I'm over him taking what could've been one of his most interesting songs ever, The Word, and slathering JW preaching all over it.
Anyway, it's a certainty that he does indeed have way better stuff just gathering dust. I don't know how things operate in Prince World, but if I had one hour to run amok in the vault/archives, I'm sure I could find a song that makes Guitar look like Wedding Feast. And that's certainly frustrating - I don't know what the man's holding out for! That said, I'm cool with a fun, effortless throwaway. I think he's a musical genius who's at his electrifyingly best on songs like Purple Rain, Let's Go Crazy, Little Red Corvette, U Got The Look and recently Fury (live) and All Along The Watchtower/Best Of You. I think he's got the ability to create a legendary rock album that could outsell any artist on the planet, even at 50. He just doesn't seem so inclined. I do have doubts, but then he comes up with the SNL performance or his guitar on My Guitar Gently Weeps and I'm fully convinced all over again. Oh, almost forgot Beautiful Strange! [Edited 2/3/07 10:16am] But don't you kind of take into account the bashing Howard Stern gave All Along the Watchtower/Berst of You sample sent to him. Howard's ardent listeners tend to go with whatever he pushes. And this was Prince covering other peoples songs. Besides, I hate to point out that songs like Dolphin and Endorphin Machine did not light the rock world on fire 12 years ago. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I'm really enjoying the song...it's fun, it's light, I love the dancey feel!
And the lyrics....who really knows what he's thinking...Prince doesn't usually "do" obvious as we all know... [Edited 2/4/07 11:42am]

Almost certainly neigh. Think Neon Telephone. It's also similar in feel to the Strange Way Of Saying I Love You outtake.

I understand if people aren't too thrilled over the song, but what I don't understand is why some of you get so very upset and angry? It's one song. A song. All of his jams can't be heavy masterpieces. It's not sure that this song is so very important to him and that it will be included in an upcoming album. Or maybe he will do some changes, like with the Fury video. All we got was an announcement on 3121.com that a new song called "Guitar" would be available for download on February 2. And that we got.
Relax a little... | |

It's a cute song. Perhaps it could use a few finishing touches, like the differences on "The Dance" between the "Chocolate Invasion" and the "3121" versions.
I think Mani is the inspiration for "Guitar". [Edited 2/4/07 11:58am]

After a few listens, it is growing on me, although I hear "Back in the USSR" everytime I listen.
While I don't mind that people don't care for it, I don't get some of the opinions. Alot of what I hear is "I don't like it because it isn't as good as _____." or "This song was easy for Prince to write". It is as if there is that 1 song out there which all others are judged and if the next single doesn't replace it, the new song sucks. Perhaps Prince should release a diary of writing each song. Maybe if he stubbed his toe in the studio and had an ingrown toenail, it would prove sufficent hardship to make the song good, and if he ate nothing but gumdrops while being blown by the twins, the song sucks. Studies have shown the ass crack of the average Prince fan to be abnormally large. This explains the ease and frequency of their panties bunching up in it. |

I think that he took his original fanbase (and himself) as far as he could with his entire catalog up-to and including TRC/ONA/NEWS, and I honestly think he "started over" with Musicology.
IMHO he's going after a new target audience, which would be teenagers and young twentysomethings. Part of him knows that his original fanbase will still support him, but stuff that we'd like (most of us are in our mid-to-late 30's) would not attract new fans. To me, musically it sounds like he's going through a midlife crisis. His music output now is the equivalent of divorcing his wife of 30 years, buying a Porsche and dating a 20-year old blonde. Which is OK, if you're the Porsche dealer or the 20-year old blonde . . .

Quirky. Quirky is exactly what it is. Even though it is a pop tune, it does not remind me of anything on 3121 or Musicology. Kinda experimental with the left right vocal shifts. Felt fresh to me more inspired. Is this about Mani? I like it. Later [Edited 2/2/07 16:37pm] I found it interesting with the left right vocal shifts. It sort of reminds of this: http://www.emdr-therapy.com/emdr.html

Okay , so I doubt I am the first to say it but I fully don't intend to read the whole thread....
Mayhap, Prince used Guitar as a metaphor for what happened this evening? The man dropped more guitar in this live public sort of performance then I have seen. Am I reaching? Ehhh... I doubt it.
