Just listening now for the first time... I really dig it, alot actually. Very funky song. It reminds me more of "3121" than "Lolita."

Its nothin special, like a track of an album. Not good enough or strong enough 2 be a Prince single.

It reminds you more of 3121 than Lolita? It actually reminds me of neither...but my goodness it is not even in the same stratosphere as 3121 as far as sound. At least Lolita and Guitar are similar in that they are pop records Maybe you could explain ...because I don't hear what you hear Dance... Let me see you dance

Has Prince totally lost his ability to write lyrics.
The words don't fit the rhythm of the song. There are many places where he's trying to fit too many syllables in a beat.

The song could've been much better with a more lush production. When the song first kicks in, a Wall of Sound type of production would've worked great.
A huge plus on this song are the guitar solos! Prince's solos have been deadly on the song 3121 and this one.

OK, well after a few problems with the order page I was finally able to download Guitar and I have successfully burned it to cd. The first time I listened to it on my computer I wasn't sure how I felt about it, I sort of felt like I was in limbo. Then I put the cd in my player and I have the song on repeat and now I have to say I'm really having a good time with it. I've been dancing and singing to it for the last hour. I felt motivated and cleaned my bedroom tonight in no time! OK,so now I'm hooked on this song and I want some more, yes I realize that's a greedy thing to say. But I feel like this if foreplay and I need to get to that final place.
I'm wondering if the Superbowl performance might be available for download on there soon.

There are many places where he's trying to fit too many syllables in a beat. yea ive been thinking the same thing, all of the last few albums have had the too many syllables than needed syndrome, the Happy Feet song is another good example of the too many syllables per beat.

question: did Prince ever have the ability of writing good lyrics? some of his best examples still include lines that make me cringe. but you know Prince -- he's never been one to give an ear to much of what anybody else would have to say about it -- he's just gonna do what he's gonna do not always a good thing

Answer: I must admit that "Guitar" may not be the level of track that some fans were wishing for (cute little track...nothing to go to crazy over, but at the same time, nothing to incessantly gripe over either...), but the amount of revisionist history going on in this site is ridiculous...I don't know...Prince has written some decent to good to great (yes great...)lyrics over the years...And yeah, there have been a few clunkers... But I'll say it again...Prince fans can be some miserable folks..lol..To me, some of these "did Prince ever have the ability of writing good lyrics" comments remind me of some of the silly folks that were shitting on Jordan or Muhammad Ali when they were past their primes. "You know that Ali was never really a great fighter; overrated, don't you think?" WTF? Too funny....Wow... [Edited 2/4/07 0:03am]

[Edited 2/3/07 23:55pm] I think its cause the Org. kinda warps reality, everything P does is put under such a microscope that its near impossible to listen to something new open minded cause of the baggage that surrounds it. I think the big problem with "Guitar" is the fact that the song wasn't available till like 7 EST. Fans/Fams were already pissed off for having to wait all day long for it and then to get something that was so totally different than what the rumor mill had spread created a lot of disappointment. Plus with every new release EVERYONE wants it to be a masterpiece and when its not well the the cycle just starts over. In my opinion he's one of the best. Sure, some lyrics aren't masterpieces, but overall there aren't many artists who can write like Prince. His choice of words, metaphors, the passion, the humour... brilliant. He makes me cry, he makes my laugh, he makes me love, he makes me think.

i think its funky (= gets sexy thoughts in my mind ) + gets my body moving. Its simple, a bit repetitive, wierd solo. not bothered about lyrics. there is guitar playing funky things in the background and popping bass.
i also like it when he adopts a character and sticks to it (must because he records quickly) because his voice has the same stress/tonal expression throughout (he has always done this though, just pointing out its a prince characteristic). it reminds me of black sweat with that long buzzing sound going over the chorus.

The words don't fit the rhythm of the song. There are many places where he's trying to fit too many syllables in a beat. now this I agree with....what ever happened to editing. The words in some places don"t fit so change them smooth them out. He include words like "the" when he doesnt have to. In that regards it does remind me of some the rap records he used to record where his words got jumbled I like the song I really do but lyrically not one of his best efforts. Song of the heart not nearly as strong musically as Guitar suffered from the same syllable challenged syndrome. One other thing....I think Price if he would have any weakness he is lyrically challenged. Just too cute sometimes. I started to notice it mostly after Wendy and Lisa left. They were great editors for him [Edited 2/4/07 4:38am] Dance... Let me see you dance

Guitar...
A moment in a date, where he is pondering "what treats me" better? Guitar or a woman... Presently, I agree, his guitar. Sorry, just telling my truth on it. lololol. The Song... very european fun. This song could be an intro into a "MOVIE" truly it sounds like a soundtrack for a movie... perhaps, Prince entering a FUN house.... FUNHOUSE! Just sharing... Take care, SingMia

Just because one doesn't like 'Guitar' and is able to convey why they find it so incredibly lackluster as a song, pop, rock, or otherwise, doesn't mean they're a 'miserable sack.' Prince has done lots of great things, is a genius of unequal standing and his place in history is safe but the man can still put out some incredibly weak studio material, in fact, as of late it's all he's been doing. If you can't handle discussing his work, go to one of the threads asking what Prince song youre currently combing your hair to, etc. No hard feelings.

Ok, after having a couple days to listen over the song and with a fresh state of mind (instead of F5 a page for an hour waiting for a download) I believe 100% that this song is utter garbage. At first I thought I liked it, but I just couldn't believe a song titled "guitar" would suck. Not that I cared if it was rocking, cause I didn't. But to have a title of "guitar" you better bring something, no you better bring all you have.
I could see Prince writing "guitar," laying down the tracks and recording in about an hour. I could see my ten-year-old brother doing the same if he had a multimillion dollar studio. It's seriously lazy music. Prince is lazy. His music is so uninspiring. I hate his new stuff. I still consider myself a fan because of his first five albums, however.

I'm quite cool with criticizing Prince...In fact, I do it myself from time to time...And I do it in a much harsher way than most fans...But let's be clear here... You can call "Guitar" weak and say the man hasn't done a lot of work over the last 10 plus years that hasn't been up to his best level...I can respect that...Hell...I AGREE WITH WITH THAT STATEMENT in a lot of ways...But I can see through someone going into some revisionist history of his past work because it's easy to critique a dude that is clearly no longer in his prime of the recording front...That's my beef with some of the statement..Not how you feel about Prince's recent/current work or whether or not he's put out lackluster work in the past...And yeah, some Prince fans are miserable...
