Prince talked about on the News Thursday

Not sure if this has been talked about before or not..
But last night (Thursday) on the 10 p.m news they were talking about
Prince. They said he was doing a sound check and they showed the
stage.. (you could see Prince and the Twinz mad Dancing on it)

The reporter than said that the songs he did in the sound check were
"Lets go Crazy"
"Baby I'm a Star"
"Proud Mary"
"Watch tower" (he didn't know the name)
"Purple rain"...

I sure hope he does not stay with this set..

I mean.. Purple rain? My gosh I have heard that song SOO much
Remember back years ago he was NEVER EVER EVER gonna play that
song again?????!!!!!

Why not "life of the party".. now that would be much more Funky
than "Baby I'm a Star"..
some of these songs are SO used.....

Sorry.. just my 2 cents worth wink

And your two cents are worth something...And that's for real...But I think you have to take in account the platform Prince is playing....It's the Super Bowl...You, like myself, are real Prince fans. The Millions of people tuning in like Prince, but trust me, they are not sick of "Purple Rain." This is a show for the masses...Hardcore Prince fans should understand that...

Yeah, typical Prince, always wanting to showcase some new female singer or mate rather than doing what we all want, simply hogging the limelight himself and singing his own songs! Clearly that is the setlist, they're not going to mess the marching band around by changing it at the last minute. Personally I really don't mind him playing his big hits - which artist wouldn't on this type of stage? Plus the Watchtower song addition is still new, cool, and will be unexpected by the masses. But I know there is going to be a big boring backlash by the hardcore fans when Prince does the songs the masses expect him to do.

He could just send the clip from the Grammy's with Star, Crazy, and Rain.

You are 100% correct... My hubby said the same thing...
We as BIG prince fans wanna hear some of his really great Tunes.
It always amazes me when I run into "P~fans" and they tell you what
HUGE Fans they are and how much they love him..
But when you ask what their favorite songs are.. its always the same
"1999" "Purple Rain" "When Doves Cry".. Rarely does any one ever
say "Crystal Ball" "Violet the Organ Grinder"
"Hold Me".. you know ... stuff like that.. and IF they DO say that.
Then believe them.. they are BIG BIG fans.....

I just hope "The masses" enjoy what Prince does and all see what a HUGE
talent he is and hopefully it will shut up some of the jerks that have
been making fun of the "OLD, Has Been Prince".....

I am VERY excited for Super Bowl Sunday! GO COLTS~~~

nah, i think it's pretty much understood that whenever prince does a big splashy televised mainstream gig, he has to do 'purple rain' and 'let's go crazy', just like jerry lee lewis has to do 'great balls of fire' and chuck berry has to do 'johnny b. goode'. it's the albatross of becoming a legend, i guess. the masses expect that one thing that made you huge.

and we're all like that about someone. if cyndi lauper were playing on TV, i wouldn't care about songs from her latest album because i'm not a fan. i want some SHE BOP. nod

It's true, but we want Prince to be different.

We don't want Prince to be a slave to himself and his past.

I would be willing to bet that the Watchtower will include the Foo's Best of You and that is gonna rock.

Speaking of rock, where has GUITAR gone!?!?

yeah, WE (the fans/fams/whatevs) do. but regular schmoes? people who STILL don't think prince ever made an album after 'purple rain'? they're not going to care about a 12-minute version of 'alexa de paris' or an acoustic version of 'the war'. they want little red corvettes driven by robot doves wearing raspberry berets and going crazy in the purple rain. period. sadly. but that's why he gets the big bucks. shrug

Excellent points...I just hope the fans/fams go into the Super Bowl performance with realistic expectations and understand the performance in the context of the event. Prince cannot come out playing obscure numbers for the masses, the promoters/sponsors don't pay for that. They want a show that will appeal to the average person who may have never heard anything you've done or only know your most famous material. My only interest in the performance is to watch Prince go out and breath new life in the material we've heard a 1000 times on a stage as big as this. Prince is gonna show out, and put on a great show. I bet money that the general public, the group this event is aimed at, will be clamoring for more after seeing his performance.

i haven't seen prince perform in front of this big an audience in a long time. i'm just interested in seeing how he manages - i'm sure it'll be fantastic, but i'm more excited to experience the energy of the performance than whatever songs he's gonna do. though of course i'm excited to know what he'll play...but it's not all that crucial.

Agreed 100%

I'm nervous for him, especially after being at the show on Wed.

I'm not nervous in that sense. It wasn't that long (2004) when he was performing in front of stadiums full of people. Back when he was doing that on the Purple Rain tour, he didn't even have the previous level of experience but he still killed it - these days he's tons of experience at one-off live tv shows. Sure, there are some things that could go wrong - sound cutting off and stuff, but usually he still gets by. Prince is always 'up' for it even when the crowd isn't. As for the rest of the band, I'm sure they're professional enough to cope. But this sort of show doesn't necessarily generate the best ever performances - the camera work is usually ropey, the sound levels up and down, the crowd too far away to really tell whether they're getting into it, lighting very bland, wind blowing everybodies clothes and hair - but all those won't be Prince's fault.

I hope the Super Bowl is the official retirement of him singing "Let's Go Crazy" because I feel like I had heard it live 1 million times in 2006. It just reminds me of the fake "Prince Fans" Orionforever spoke about.

"Purple Rain" I am on the fence about. I can let it go, but I understand why it's around.
