Prince, The Superbowl, and the guitar... I don't know if Prince will play a new song called "guitar" at the Superbowl. However, I think he DEFINITELY should make his performance at the Superbowl a sonic and visual assault with his guitar.
Prince is and has always been HEAVILY UNDERRATED as a guitar player. Many in America still have a misperception about Prince and what he is all about (like Michael Jackson, etc.). Now is the time for Prince to move up a few rungs on the music immortality list. Remember 2004 "While My Guitar Gently Weeps"? Remember SNL "Fury"? People who didn't know finally found out. Prince is the man. Multiply that times a billion and see what happens. Prince---the time is now baby. F' the Bears, F' the Colts. I'm from Minneapolis and I'm rooting for Prince. Here's the thing about Prince. Prince knows the perception about him as a guitarist. On the R&R Hall of Fame, he didn't surprise any of the folks that were there, i.e., other musicians, industry folk, etc. Cuz they already knew P could play. I feel most people knows he can play. Many just don't want to give it up to him out of jealousy or whatever other hangup they maybe afflicted with. My point is though I believe P is VERY aware of this and always has been. Me, I would love to see P come out on guitar and act a buck fool but I feel P thinks he has nothing to prove as a guitarist and that if the mood suits him to wail on the axe, then he will. If not, then he'll do his thing with the Twinz and the splits, etc. The only time where I feel P wanted to prove himself on axe was at the AMA in 85 when he played Purple Rain. That was on national t.v. and he made the most of it. But now, nah. I think he's at peace with whatever folks may think of him as a guitarist. He's been wailing on lead axe since I'm Yours and he maybe like "If people don't know I can blaze on axe by now, then they'll never know." SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

I disagree. People who are "in the know" are VERY aware that Prince is a god on the axe. However, many in the general public don't know Prince plays guitar because it's not all he does. Some of his biggest hits aren't "guitar" songs. Prince himself buries his guitar in the mix of his rock songs like "fury". A good amount of the time Prince has played before a HUGE audience he hasn't even played the guitar much. He hasn't cut loose. "New Power slide...."

Excellent points as usual BG! Like you said, some people will never give him his due because of their hangups, and we know what those are...black man on guitar other than Hendrix and because he dresses "like a girl" or wears make up. I really don't give a shit about people that ignorant recognizing Prince's talents or not. They obviously are very limited and get caught up on base level shit. Like BG said, those that know music know Prince is a hell of a guitarist and most importantly he knows it--ultimately, thats all that matters. Besides, the masses never focus on anything longer than five mins anyway...

I have been waiting for the Superbowl since November. I mean this entire year so far has been about Prince. I've been buying and playing his albums and videos and movies and I even had a P shirt made for the Superbowl that will not make it's debut until sunday. I am stoked!
I want Prince to make funk waves come out my tv with all that good playing! I love a Man who:
Wears More Make Up Than Me. Wears Four Inch Stilleto Boots. Changes His Name To An Unpronouncable Symbol. Who Changes His Name Back From An Unpronouncable Symbol. Oh And Most Importantly, Who Is Sexy Little Drop Of Butterscotch

I think that is a bit ignorant to think that "ignorant" people are the only people who don't know Prince's prowess on guitar. Many well adjusted, open minded, folks aren't aware that Prince is one of THE BEST on guitar. Again, it could be ignorance, but Prince hasn't ALWAYS made guitar his focus like Hendrix, Clapton, Page, etc..... "New Power slide...."

I agree with Skywalker.
There are so many people out there who have no idea what he can do on a guitar, because the only songs they ever hear on the radio are Little Red Corvette, 1999, When Doves Cry, Kiss or Cream. Or even more recently, Black Sweat. Even some of his more guitar heavy hits - Let's Go Crazy etc. they don't realise that it's him - they just assume it's a session player or someone in his band (like Michael Jackson would do). I'm talking about the general public who aren't huge music fans like the most of us here. Just your average Joe who listens to the radio while at work or on the way home. Those people aren't "jealous" of his skills... they just don't know he has them!! [Edited 2/1/07 17:21pm] Toejam @ Peach & Black Podcast: http://peachandblack.podbean.com

The only song that have a lot of guitar in it that people would hear on pop/rock radio is "Let's Go Crazy" and as far as the rnb stations oh come on they barely play non-rnb songs much less Let's GO Crazy. Since about a quarter of Americans are going to watch Super Bowl, I hope that if Prince play a heavy guitar tune that they will learn something from this man.
