I'll Jack U Off Does anybody here think that "Jack u off" was...or coulda been...well..kinda...gay? HEY don't bite my head off about this topic...and YES i know that we don't wanna get into the gay/bi/straight convo again. But i just wanna know about THAT song. ( btw i believe that one or sum of his band members in the past thought that it was kinda bananas and stawberries because they never heard of a man jacking a girl off.) Do not walk behind me, for I may not lead.

Yeah, I think he wanted to stir up confusion and discussion (controversy). He talked about it (not this specifically, but in general) in the interview he did with Chris Rock. I think he said something like "there was a lot of playing going on there" (meaning that he wanted to keep people guessing). Prince is smart; he knew what he was doing. He was making bold statements as an artist and they dealt with sexuality in unique and provocative ways. I'm sure he knew that songs with titles like "Head," "Jack U Off," and "If I Was Your Girlfriend" would be misconstrued by some people, but he wanted to challenge people.

Yes Prince was very playful especially in matters of sexuality and he liked to put things out there that kept people asking questions and guessing, however...
I think it's pretty clear that he is talking to a female if you look at the lyrics. If your man ain't no good
Come on over to my neighborhood We can jump in the sack and I'll jack u off If u're tired of the masturbater Little girl, we can go on a date And if u like, I'll jack u off I'll jack u off, jack u off I'll jack u off, jack u off I'll jack u off I only do it for a worthy cause Viriginity or menopause U'll have an instant heart attack if I jack u off If u really really want to be a star We gotta do it in your momma's car Naked in a Cadillac, I'll jack u off If we can't find no place to go Girl, I'll take u to a movie show, we can sit in the back And I'll jack u off I'll jack u off, jack u off I'll jack u off, jack u off I'll jack u off, yeah Yeah, yeah, I'll jack u off Alright say, we'll put some funk on here I'll jack u off If u ain't chicken baby, come here If u're good I'll even let u steer As a matter of fact, u can jack me off Yeah, that's right I'll jack u off, yeah I'll jack u off [Edited 3/21/07 8:17am] "I know I hold you too tight, but I just can't seem to get close enough."

The lyrics are pretty unambiguous, actually. "Little girl, we can go on a date. If you like, I'll jack u off." "I only do it for a worthy cause. Virginity or menopause, you'll have an instant heart attack if I jack u off."
He most likely used "jack u off" because it was the first thing that came to mind that fit the meter. "Fingerbang u off" has more than twice as many syllables. [Edited 3/21/07 8:18am] We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Oh, I'm a little disappointed in this thread. I kinda thought it would be an offer.
Anyway, I thought it was kinda gayish at first, but the more I thought about it the more I thought that a guy could 'jack off' a girl. Isn't 'jack off' just a term for masturbation, free from gender? You owe me 2 cents now. "Plaid shorts are completely over."

In a Terence Trent D'Arby Interview from the '90s... he said that the only way for black males in the '80s to gain a truly high level of success was to be one of three types: a family man (Lionel Richie), a bi-sexual or asexual (Michael Jackson), otherwise audiences would feel somewhat threatened. He considered Prince's persona to be essentially bi-sexual. In addition, there was a big phase of bisexuality among rockstars in the '70s (check out David Bowie and Mick Jagger from back then), so Prince's look and act back then makes a lot of sense. But Prince never alluded to being gay in his lyrics, including in "Jack U Off". Wasn't he so horny back then that he sang about doing it with his sister in "Dirty Mind"?
In the music industry, times have changed drastically (especially with the explosion of rap), and most people don't remember or know Terence T. D'Arby anymore.

I think it's also pretty clear that he could be talking to a male if you look at the lyrics. (i know he's not, but check it out anyway) If your man ain't no good Come on over to my neighborhood We can jump in the sack and I'll jack u off If u're tired of the masturbater Little girl, we can go on a date And if u like, I'll jack u off I'll jack u off, jack u off I'll jack u off, jack u off I'll jack u off I only do it for a worthy cause Viriginity or menopause U'll have an instant heart attack if I jack u off If u really really want to be a star We gotta do it in your momma's car Naked in a Cadillac, I'll jack u off If we can't find no place to go Girl, I'll take u to a movie show, we can sit in the back And I'll jack u off I'll jack u off, jack u off I'll jack u off, jack u off I'll jack u off, yeah Yeah, yeah, I'll jack u off Alright say, we'll put some funk on here I'll jack u off If u ain't chicken baby, come here If u're good I'll even let u steer As a matter of fact, u can jack me off Yeah, that's right I'll jack u off, yeah I'll jack u off

I agree with your comment about the industry back in the day. There were what seemed to be alot of sexual confusion back then which seemed to keep ppl interested. But now, the music industry is all about sex. I got a question for you: In order to match or try to match the success that Prince had in the 80's, what kind of persona would someone have to take nowwadays to really stand out llike Prince did (male or female)? And btw, Robertes71 I got a penny, can you meet me half way darling? Do not walk behind me, for I may not lead.

Its funny cause even with a title like Jack U Off it never once occurred to me that this song could be about anything other than P talking to a woman.
