SUPERBOWL - NOT a world stage!!!!

I hope Prince does a fantastic performance whatever - but please the Superbowl is an American thing, outside America, no-one really cares, it is not a global event like the World Cup (Soccer) - it is an Amercian game, and as such, an American hobby - good luck to Prince.

but will everyone stop making out this will put Prince back on the global map - it won't! Teh American map perhaps, but globally no one really gives s sh*t about the Superbowl.

Laters and peace!

Why the rant?

Just like there are some in the States that give a hoot about the World Cup, there are some outside the U.S. that even care to watch the Superbowl....big deal... shrug

No rant intended, just all this excitement over a SuperBowl performance - and?

We would liek a world tour and maybe that might help put Prince back on the radar - unless he gets his cock out to shock middle-Americans and the bible belt this aint going to make world news!

This is silly! Of course the Super Bowl is of Global relevance! Sure, it's not on the global scale as your previously mentioned World Cup, but consider this...according to recent estimates, 1 billion people watch the Super Bowl each year. Compare that to the estimates that 1.1 billion people globally watch the World Cup finals, and you'd have to agree it's pretty close in terms exposure to the masses.

You can hate on the Super Bowl being an "American hobby" on a personal level all you like. But, you can't diminish it's appeal world wide. It is a Global experience, and Prince will benefit from being a part of it.

Just my 2 cents.

Worldwide media coverage of Super Bowl XLI

(Jan. 16, 2007) -- Televisions all around the world will be tuned to Super Bowl XLI as 54 international broadcasters will televise the game to 232 countries and territories in 34 languages.

Super Bowl XLI is available to an estimated worldwide audience of 750 million to 1 billion people. There are 19 television and radio stations from 14 countries broadcasting the game on site from Dolphin Stadium.

For the first time, the Super Bowl will be broadcast live on terrestrial TV in Korea when SBS Media Net airs the action from South Florida. In China, CCTV, Dragon TV and G+ Sports (Shanghai) will broadcast the Super Bowl this year.

The NFL will have a strong presence in Brazil when BandSports broadcasts Super Bowl XLI in Portuguese, followed by a 90-minute condensed version of the game on terrestrial station Banderiantes. Game highlights will also be featured online at Globoesporte.com in Portuguese.

Super Bowl XLI will air on two terrestrial networks in Germany with a live broadcast on ARD and a delayed broadcast on the sports station, DSF.

NFL International is providing a world feed in standard and high definition for all international broadcast partners for the sixth straight year. English-speaking countries showing the game will hear Sterling Sharpe and Spiro Dedes call the action.

Yes, the Superbowl is available to about 60 million people in the UK - but only a couple of hundred thousand might actually take advantage of that availablility, if that. So the actual worldwide viewing figures of the Superbowl will only be a tiny fraction of the number that will have access to it (likely under 100 million, with nearly all of them, say 98%, in North America).

This compares to an ACTUAL figure of 1 billion+ for the World Cup Final.

So the Superbowl half-time will be great for Prince in the US, but will not do a jot to get him back on the world stage.

Unfortunately for your arguement, your "estimates" are interpretive and are not reflective of the actual audience the SB will reach...

Well since it (Superbowl XLI) hasn't happened yet you don't know how many people will be watching it. And basing your response to my post on an event that has already happened (the World Cup) is a little short sighted don't cha' think?

The point of the matter is that people all of over the world have the ability to see the Superbowl if they so choose. Just like people all over the world had the ability to see the World Cup if they chose to do so.

As far as total numbers, there are more international viewers for the Super Bowl than there are US viewers.

Based on this, it definitely makes Prince's performance a "worldwide event".

It seems highly unlikely that more people outside the US watch the Superbowl than in it. After all, American Football is not an internationally popular sport. I would say the huge majority of those watching will be from the United States.

I'm an American and I give less than a flying fuck about the Super Bowl!! I was only interested last year because it was hosted in my backyard (Detroit) and I'm only interested this year because of Prince performing the halftime show...which should have happened last year...damn it...but I digress.

Anyhoo, I'm sure there are many...many...people worldwide that feel as I do and will be...or will want to be...tuning in just to see Prince. I believe this year's Super Bowl is going to globally shatter viewer records for that reason and for that reason alone!

For last years Superbowl about 90 million watched in the USA. World Wide it was about one Billion. So I guess 900 + million viewers WORLD WIDE (outside of the US) is proof that "globally no one really gives s sh*t".

Get your facts straight - the POTENTIAL audience of the Superbowl was a billion. The ACTUAL audience (including US figures) was closer to 100 million. In other words, only a few million outside the US watched it. It's a US sport between US teams, so it's not really all that surprising - this is not a global event but a major US one.

It could have been said in a gentler way to avoid upsetting our american friends orgers. But it is true only a tiny fraction of people watch the SB in Europe like probably few americans watch the World Cup. It is a cultural thing.
Having said that, career wise, it is a fantastic opportunity for Prince. His name will be mentionned everywhere in the world for sure in papers and snippets of his performance will be shown on TV as well.
So even if I do not know anything about american football, this year i'll be watching !!! lol

I'm an American and I love Prince, and the only reason I will watch the Superbowl is for the halftime show. It's marvelous exposure for Prince. I'm glad some people realize that. Forget about how american football is or isn't an international sport compared to "futbol" or soccer. More people will see Prince than ever before.

And that's really not the point now is it? The original poster made it seem like nobody but Americans watch the Superbowl. And unless he/she went door to door to each person on the planet outside of America and took a poll he/she would have no way of knowing that. And obviously if the game is being broadcast in more than just America there must be some interest from other countries in seeing it.

If you're a Prince fan, who cares who watches it where? Just watch it and pity the people who don't appreciate it. The fact that it'll be broadcast in many different countries does make it a global event, even if only Americans watch it.

I don't care where you live... This Super Bowl appearence is going to be watched by more people in more countries than a TWO YEAR WORLD TOUR COMBINED...

As a 23 year Prince fan at the age of 42, this is going to be the performance I've been wishing for... ALLLLL of my friends that have never heard Prince LIVE and have yet to see/hear him JAM on the guitar are going to need to pick their jaws up off the floor before the 3rd Quarter starts !
