THe Stern songs/ Do I expect too much?

I just found a site that has the Howard Stern Watchtower/Best of You mix. I read 100 articles about how great it was, and its a return to guitar. I must have missed it. It reminded me of the Rebith of the Flesh rehersal. Other than that, why take two classic songs, and yes I think Best of You is that good, and no im not a FF homer, and do a turd version.

Why do I think that.

Well let's start with the production, it sounds like a demo, maybe it was.

The drumming is pathetic, I mean if this dosen't make you wish for Blackwell, or Mike B. or even Bobby Z. what will?

And back to guitar??? When did he leave it? I mean No he has not, and probley will never do a Purple Rain sounding CD again. But then again, none of his albums since then have had that live sound, with synth and the guitar effect, not even the ONA live CD.

So now I ask myself, am I expecting too much?? Am I the only one that has really realy liked, no more than 2 songs on each CD since ATWIAD? I like them all , but not really REALLY like them.

For example. on Rave, I love the title track, but we all know that he had to record it in 88. Or on 3121. I like that song, but it had to be done in 93 with Sonny and Mike. The rest are just ok.

I dug the sound of TRC but its song lyrics for the most part were weak, but at least it sounded good.

Does anyone feel like I do?

3121 wasn't done in 1993... it was done recently when they (the trio) got together and recorded a lot of stuff.

I'd say for me the last album that did it for me all the way through was the BATMAN soundtrack. The Watchtower part of the new 1 is good, but when he goes into the Foo shit it just seems as though he's trying too hard to be relevant or fit in, the antithesis of what got me into his stuff in the first place.
I do look forward to the superbowl performance, I always enjoy watching him play live.

I hate that song The Best of You. Maybe Prince does it better.

Not sure why he's doing it, though.

Not sure of the history with the FooF's but maybe he's thanking them for respecting his wishes and not pushing the Nikki song, or maybe he's showing them how to cover a song.

Either way, I like the result. Both songs are good. I chopped Howie out and that's now the one thing on my playlist. At the point the Guitar track will be a bonus.

After going over the lyrics, I can't help but wonder if they may have some relevance in his life right now.

There is an element of truth in what you say... but to claim that you haven't liked more than two songs per album since Around is a but much... Come on, Parade, Sign, Lovesexy. Three classic albums before the wheels begin to come off with Batman

I think Chaos and Disorder sounds quite 'live' and is a fucking awful album for loving ans hating... I think that you must like the Undertaker video... I think Prince's production values since Paisley Park became such a polished production platform has lacked spontaneity, life or adventure... This kicked in with Batman and has existed ever since... except with Chaos, which was pissed off the hoof to get rid of a contractual obligation.

I haven't heard the Stern songs. I hope to. I like the fact that Prince is covering FF and Watchtower (the irony is delicious). If Prince is guiding us toward a guitar led album, heaven open your gates I'm ready to ascend. If it's another of his tricks I'll not be a happy man.

No I don't feel like you do. The sample from The Stern Show is great. The production is awesome : it is raw, it sounds live, it is "hot", his singing is absolutely marvelous and passionate.
And btw since ATWIAD, he has made Parade, SOTT, the Black Album, Lovesexy, The Undertaker, The Gold Experience and TRC which is for me in my Prince best top 3 Best Cds.
So no again, I don't feel like you do. Bye.

I've heard them now. No. It does not sound like a 'live' song/melody, but it sounds marvellous. Hearing Prince cover a song by the Foo Fighters is heaven on a plate. A Queens of the Stone Age cover would make me ejaculate over my keyboard... (Prince, if you're listening...) It sounded good. It also sounded not like the Prince I want to hear. I want Prince to make good the value of his vault before he covers other people's music, no matter how good the song and how good his version.

To find the songs, I went to yahoo, and typed in Prince Watchtower. And for the one reply up top. I said I liked all of the songs, but nothing that I really, liked. Or how about I didn't think there were more than 2, 5 star songs a CD but alot of 3's. I mean in all fairness, we all like to get to hear new songs, but after awhile you can see them for what they are after the newness wears off.

Anyone else annoyed that they talk over the music so much, and interrupt and stuff?!?!

Sounded good to me, though "Best Of You" is a song I really like. Really seamless transition as well.
So look into the mirror, do u recognise some1? Is it who u always hoped u would become, when u were young?

I dig the vocals but besides that it's a little too ordinary sounding for me. People just cream their pants because it's guitar-heavy, IMO. Kind of unfair too judge on this online radio snippet, though.
