What's better - DMSR or Something In The Water

I'm putting together a 'best of' early era compilation and there's only room for one.

Thanks for the help.

I vote "Something in the Water"- its amazing. So musically cold, yet vocally passionate. Amazing.
now i know what this is all about. now i know exactly what i am.

While Something In The Water is clearly more interesting from a production point of view, it's DMSR that Prince has been playing on a regular basis in recent years (even though he did a killer of version of Something In The Water at Xenophobia in 2002, that for me surpasses the studio version).

And DMSR has some great funky guitar playing in it.

I think that DMSR is the better of the two. I love the dance beat of it and I move my ass everytime I hear it. biggrin

Both awesome and from one of the best darn Prince albums...period.

I say DMSR because it is a good dance song and it will probably flow well with your other picks.

if you are doing a party dmsr is the obvious choice, as art something in the water is a highlight and superior to dmsr.

I have to say Something in the Water, because it has such raw emotion.

Yep, I'm doing some editing to see if I can make the space.

If only CDs were a little bit longer..... then I'd have to make the same decision over 2 different songs that haven't made the cut at all this time around smile

Something in the Water is "better" but DMSR sums up the "essential" Prince more so in my opinion.

Something in the Water. The song totally relies on Prince's vocals to carry it, I mean the solo is Prince screaming. Very unique song, man. I've never heard anything like it.

Unbelievable.

DMSR is funky and danceable, but I don't think it has stood the test of time as well as Something in the Water.

Like UCantHavaDaMango said, it's raw emotion, such a great piece of art.

"better" is a relative term.

If you are doing a 'best of' early Prince, DMSR would be a more appropriate choice. It is a staple of his music that he stills plays regularly today. Something in the water is more obscure and isn't as "essential" to the Prince catalogue as DMSR. Not that I like it better-DMSR is just more quintessential Prince.

"Something in the Water". Just got through listening to this song several times and I gotta say, I love it! Love the drum machine and the keyboards in it. I also like how Prince says, "Talk 2 me! Tell me who U R!" I know that sounds wacky, but I just like how Prince says it. giggle
RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

DMSR's more well known and more loved, and Prince himself seems to like it better if it's constantly being on his playlist are any indication, but I'd still say Something.....should get the spot.

Here's a suggestion: Make two "Best Of" complications. One for the best of the well-known songs, and the other for a best of collection of his more obscure, less-appreciated work.
