TRC swearing? Apparently there was to be swearing on TRC but it was edited out. Can anybody confirm this? When I listen to '1+1+1=3' just after he says "y'all don't know nothing about that" it sounds like he says something else but it's edited out. Hmmm...

What bothers me, is that if he wants to swear off swearing, fine, whatever, but when he says stuff like "We don't give a duck", or "... "all are superstitions, what the ... (rhymes with luck)", or "kick your pants", don't we all know what he is saying, and doesn't that really equate to swearing?
Swearing isn't the words themselves, it's the connotations surrounding the swear. I mean, if I hurt myself, and I say "SHOOT!!" or "SHIT!!", doesn't it mean the same thing, when all is said and done? Actually, Outkast utilizes a similar method to replace certain words. For example they have used the phrase "sick a duck" where they just interchanged the vowels. I think substituting other words for curses, especially when you have just hurt yourself, is a show of restraint. It also shows you are thinking before you speak. For a person like Prince who has in the past basically programmed himself to swear on cue, I think it takes a lot of self discipline and thinking before he speaks for him to stop cursing. It's like saying he's supposed to be on a diet but yet and still he is still eating celery sticks! Eating the celery sticks is part of being on the diet. Just as him substituting certain silly words for harsher ones is part of the process he is taking to stop cursing altogether. This can be just as hard for a person as dieting can be for another. So we need to realize this and stop nitpicking. Every now and then he may slip, but that doesn't mean he isn't trying.

I think I understand where you're coming from adorable2, but in the final analysis I tend to agree more with saviorfaire. The word being used is important, but not more important than the intent behind the word. If I say "Duck" but I'm actually thinking in my own mind of a word which substitutes the letter "D" with the letter "F" "*uck" then who am I fooling? The others around me? Myself? I'm surely not fooling God. As Prince gets more into the word, he will understand this. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Personally, whenever I hear, Prince's avoidance of the fowel language. I just fill in the blanks. For example on Muse 2 The Pharoah: ...'when there's no such thing as luck...all are superstitions, what the fuck!' I sing it aloud...Savoir is right about connotations. Though I see many of your points about restraint, and thinking before you speak but, sometimes you just have to cuss. The first time I cussed around my mother, she had accidently slammed my finger in the door. As the door slowly broke my index finger, I screamed "SSHHHIIITT!" I was to hurt to even understand what I said. My mother simply responded by saying, "Oooh, that must have hurt, I'm sorry" No big deal...right? Blue A coat of Blue Cashmere Blue
