Watching the '91 VMA performance of Gett Off made me appreciate the "new" Prince. I've been one of those people who really misses the overtly sexual Prince of the past, but I am so glad he isn't doing performances like that VMA one.
I'd forgotten how stupid it looked to see the giant stage with the flames and the pack of male and female dancers in thongs, all oiled up and grinding on each other. It wasn't even sexy. It was just desperate and sleazy looking. It kinda makes me appreciate the Prince we've got today, who is still sexy but isn't shoving it down our throats like he did back at that performance (the assless pants thing is a whole other issue by itself). The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

Yay, ass-less pants! I love the eroticism of it all. Only Princey could come up with something so seductive.

I agree this performance was BAD. The first mis-step was the microphone swinging away and ruining the opening momentarily, then his embarresing attempt to recover by miming some mic stand adjusting.....
I always felt like he never recovered from the chill of this slight accident. The entire spectacle was sluggish, and not exciting. And him getting pinned under the other dancers and miming the scream seemed bad, how we wanted to see him do the scream live! (of course, it's not even him on the recording according to three of the bandmembers) Daddy Pop, and Let's Go Crazy/Kiss on Arsenio were so much better! It never looked like that, it looked like it just swung over to his left, or was his sleeve catching lower on the stand? My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

Right or wrong, I just remember from those days, holding my breath and hoping he did not do something overtly rediculous that would distract from the music.
I think Prince is back becuase he has toned down the stunts, and allowed people to just listen.

It was an awesome performance considering his "image" at the time.
...and you have to admit it...those assless pants DID get him some attention. By St. Boogar and all the saints at the backside door of Purgatory!

just went and watched this performance....wow...terrible.....did not age well at all. Tony M. was so annoying, he ruined so many songs, especially "love 2 the 9's". Anyway, not a good showing, especially when compared to the "Sign O the times/Play in the sunshine" classic performance a few years earlier..

It was the single most rememberable performance that evening.
I thought he recovered great from the mic incident i the beginning, and the stage was insane. I can't recall any other musical performance that evening, but boy do I remember the Prince performance. It wasn't his best instrumentally, and it wasn't his best as far as movement and theatrics are concerned (Lovesexy Era Prince would have blown that away), but it was a terrific way for him to reintroduce himself into the mainstream media. Diamonds and Pearls produced several top 10 singles, and the Get Off Performance (Assless pants) was the talk of TV and radio for weeks to come. My only complaint about the performance is that it seemed stiff.

If you want to complain about a performance, then how's about the one where he blinded the audience with a burst of bright, white light and you could barely make him out past the glare? (Does anyone remember what event that was on?) By St. Boogar and all the saints at the backside door of Purgatory!

Um...no. That number borrowed heavily from Take Off With Us from All That Jazz. (The concept -- not the song.) We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

He needed o do something to re-cover from GB and D and P did go on to sell about 5 million copies. If you don't sell records at all you will be canned by any record company. Even now P can sell at least a million copies which is good for his age.

It never looked like that, it looked like it just swung over to his left, or was his sleeve catching lower on the stand? No one of his sleeves did get caught. Remember the jacket he had on had those big net like holes on it. The mic snagged on one of them. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I can just picture a record label executive behind the curtain going, "Do you think it's sexy enough yet? Do people get it yet that Prince is sexy, and Gett Off is a cool sex song? Maybe we need more people in thongs, or maybe some dancers in cages simulating blowjobs on bananas". The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

Omg guys you really have to keep this performance in perspective. This was X rated back in the day. I remember when I had to wait untill 10:30 at night to even HOPE to hear this jam on the radio on KDWB back in the day. I know it might not look like much now but when it aired...omg "GETT OFF" was like THE song!!!!

forget about the performance.
that song was GREAT. raw, dark, deep, funk. when i first heard it, it wasnt anything like i had ever heard. too bad prince is not very innovative like he used to.

I remember the British press lying by saying he stopped midway
and asked,no told, the audience to stop ogling his body. the wankers. Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!
