The state of music address!!! 2xx7 Whilst (for amusement purposes only, not seeking any serious talent),watching American Idol, the hard ,cold fact has dawned on me.
Music is without a doubt in the most serious trouble it has ever been in! PERIOD!!!! You have your generic A.I. type pop garbage , middle of the road radio friendly garbage-one hit wonders..if you will...bands with no real anything but a name that will be forgotten in 15 minutes. Rap, HipPOP, no longer raw and street, but corporate and sweet! And then the gaping hole were Rock & Roll used to sit. Heavy Metal is a whole lot of sewage , with bands that are all interchangable in sound and content, and vocals that are , well not even vocal.....just gurgeling shit! Then you have PRINCE , whom has gone VEGAS? Vegas? NO not the true rebel that Prince once was.....VEGAS! Not to forget the Super Bowl! I don't want to write a thesis here, but please people tell me just when and where were you the day the music died? Did I miss something? Is there a true MUSIC form left? Sombody help! Hear hear, totally agree!
The suits know they're losing their iron grip on on the distribution and sale of music, so they won't gamble on anything that runs the slightest risk of flopping - which is why all they're giving us is pre-fab, paint-by-numbers garbage. The solution? We must find the real music for ourselves! Visit sites like Soundclick, ask your friends... champion the underdog! There is real, original music being made, but the days of finding it at the wrecka stow, on the radio, or on MTV are OVER!!! (for the record, I have no quarrel with Prince in Vegas - if it'll make the dinner crowd more aware of his musical awesomeness, that can't be a bad thing... ) [Edited 1/25/07 14:54pm]

If it wasnt for in Prince in the 80's it wouldve been "dead" pretty much since then.
After the 70's there hasnt been that much worthwhile.

[Edited 1/25/07 14:06pm] It's all true... Unfortunatly it is! I'm not even taken too far aback by Prince doing Vegas, at least we have him. He will(hopefully) always be an ARTIST of vision and progression in the very small minded-corporate-Wal-Mart state that music is stuck in!

IMO Prince has had a 'Vegas' feel to his live shows since the 'Parade' tour at least. Prince loves the '60s James Brown revue (semi-caberet). He wore a '60s JB-type suit on the ONA tour. I think he also likes 'Vegas' Elvis (eg. Prince's use of open chest jumpsuits and high collars).
And that's not mentioning Prince's renowned use of the 'Vegas E' sustained chord in so many of his live and studio performances. Prince's natural home, especially in middle age, is Vegas!!

The 'Vegas E'? I haven't heard about that. Can you point me to an example on cd, so I can check out what you mean?

I, personally am not "whining" but rather in a state of disgust with the music BUSINESS...heavy emphasis on BUSINESS!!!! I love REAL music . Assumptions are a bitch aren't they? I am a 27 year old who has been on this board for a long time. I understand your frustration with music "business" and the shitty state of it. I just don't understand the need to monologue about it endlessly. It's your job as an art lover to find music that you like-trust me, there is plenty good shit out there. You are grownup enough to find it without being spoon fed by FM radio and MTV. As far as Prince goes-he is doing, as he always has, what ever the fuck he wants and that hasn't changed. You slam popular taste, but you yourself are guilty of subscribing to it when you paint the cliche picture of Vegas and being musician there. If you knew your music history, and were half the cultured music fan that you claim to be, you'd know that Vegas used to be "it" for cool live music/performances. Prince is trying to tap into that feeling again. So next time you make ignorant assumptions ask yourself: What are you bitching about? [Edited 1/26/07 9:52am] "New Power slide...."

The question is: What is real music?

The 'Vegas E'? I haven't heard about that. Can you point me to an example on cd, so I can check out what you mean? It's simply when, at the end of certain tunes, Prince calls 'Vegas E!' and the band all play a long, sustained E chord (though not always E), as a dramatic ending to a song. One example in his 'official' catalogue is at the end of 'It's About That Walk' on 'The Vault' album, where Prince calls 'Vegas on the C!' and they all play a long C chord, until Prince gives the signal to end the song on a fun 'flourish' from the horns and drums. It's just a dramatic, 'showbizzy' way of ending certain songs. He been doing it quite a lot live since at least the early-90s. Hope that helps.

That the image is more important then the music. That's it's all about the image? I as well as many others have been to the concerts in Las Vegas and they are just a raw and amazing as any other of his concerts along with there late late night 90 minute jazz jam after shows. The super bowl he hasn't even performed yet, but i tell you it wont be a light show. It will be about the music.
