(sigh) when will people realize that music is subjective? We will NEVER settle this discussion.

That said, I would like to ask a couple of questions:

To those who said yes, there are people as talented or more talented than Prince, I would like to know, when all is said and done, is Prince your favorite artist?

If he isn't to you, then that's cool, I can see why you don't think he's the most talented.

But, if he is, can you please tell me what you think the difference is between enjoyability and talent?

To my mind, any level of technical proficiency on instruments is irrelevant. lyrical/composition ability is completely subjective, just like any form of art. So when it's broken down, talent is all about how much you enjoy that person.

To me, I enjoy Prince's music more than anyone elses, and I love so much music, and so many artists. However, because I enjoy Prince's entire work more than anyone elses, yes, he is the most talented artist I have ever heard. Although mind you, I would never reject the possibility that there isn't one, living or dead who is/was greater. It's always possible.

PS. Supernova, liked what you said.

Anyone as talented as Prince? At what???

Of course, this isn't a good place to ask that type of question. Kind of like at a skinhead rally asking the crowd whether Jews get a bum rap or not...

Anyway, when you talk about span of musical genres and musical vocabulary - this is where Prince separates himself from everyone in my opinion. His music is like the lake in the middle of jungle. All types of animals drink there. All type of music lovers can meet at his music. He is a GENIUS at combining, integrating, and mastering different types or forms of music.

The reason we would never agree on his best albumn is because we love him musically for different reasons...our own OTHER musical taste (mine for example, hard core hip hop rap) I would venture is very different amongst ourselves.

Now, is he the most talented? It's 2002 and play some of his music from the 70's, 80, 90, and now 2000's and see if it sounds dated. Play the radio and hear so many artists do what he did 20 years ago and determine what the implications of that is about. Then put on "Joy in Repetition" and let's end this discussion immediately. The answer is a resounding "NO". No one is as talented as Prince in my opinion. Stevie Wonder is great but face it - is his music AS DIVERSE as Prince??? Is ANYONE'S?...Listen to The Vault, Purple Rain, Choas and Disorder, and The Rainbow Children and tell me whose musical vocabulary is as extensive as Prince's. No, I don't list those as his best, but check out the musical variations within just those.

The REAL question isn't "Is Anyone as talented as Prince?". Come on, we already KNOW that answer!!! The REAL question is "Why doesn't everyone value his music like we obviously do?" I say due to ignorance...enlighten someone, open their eyes, I do it and they are flabergasted...you're fine - most people think Prince retired over 10 years ago. To those who don't recognize his genuis, I say, "SHUT UP ALREADY...DAMN!!!..."

Well after that 'SheSaid'. There's nothing I can say. You nailed it on the head. Beautiful metaphor, "the lake, and different animals coming to drink" I think most places you go (online) as far as fansites and such. You'll find that fans of a particular artist, are all the same. I believe, Prince.org for example is one of the few, if not the only place where you can have people every color in the rainbow, all religions/beliefs, ages/walks of life, gay/lesbian, hetero, Hip-Hop Orientated lifestyle, Hard-Rock, Grunge, Heavy Metal...what other artists does that...?

For all of you who thought, "The Rainbow Children' Cover Art" is racist. The above is what he meant, I'm sure. I'll have someone ask him, I'm sure he would agree...

Bowie for sure.

Maybe he doesn't have the mastery of as many instruments as Prince but he does play quite a few- guitar, sax, keyboards, piano, programming, plus a shitload of rare weird things like mellotron and koto.

But he's a far more literate lyricist than Prince will ever be. His writing is among the most imaginative and complex you'll find.

And he's a better actor, businessman and collaborator.

Plus, he's blazed more trails than anyone in rock 'n' roll history.

His live shows are just as riveting. Again, he doesn't play an instrument as often as Prince, but that allows him to focus on his voice, which I feel he uses much better in concert. Prince sometimes if focusing on too many things at once. I like how he doesn't dance much anymore cuz it just distracts.

Overall, I'd say they're equals.

**Fame, "Nien! It's mine!" is just his line

To bind your time, it drives you to, crime

Fame

Could it be the best, could it be?

Really be, really, babe?

Could it be, my babe, could it, babe?

Really, really?

Is it any wonder I reject you first?

Fame, fame, fame, fame

Is it any wonder you are too cool to fool

Fame

Fame, bully for you, chilly for me

Got to get a rain check on pain

Fame**

I can find more literate, imaginery and complex lyrics than that by a lot of people. wink

And he's a better actor, businessman and collaborator.

Non musical things.

Sorry, talent is talent. Music or otherwise.

"Fame" is a pop song and one of 2 US #1's. It wasn't meant to be profound. Try reading the words to "Teenage Wildlife", "Station to Station", or "Slip Away".

He's started more trends, charted more previously unknown musical territory and had a more lasting effect on pop culture than anyone in the biz- that's what I mean. He's a musical fortune teller and astronaut. He brings back information to the rest of us that we'd never gather ourselves.

Sorry, but the question was about MUSICAL talent, not talent in general. If that's the case this question could bring up a whole hell of a lot of people and Prince might be left in the dust.

Dude, I was joshing you with that. It makes no difference where songs hit on the charts. I was pointing out the fact that everyone writes lyrics that will make you scratch your head and don't come across as literate or complex. Even Bowie.

A more lasting effect on pop culture than 'anyone'? A bold statement that isn't really true.

He's a musical fortune teller and astronaut. He brings back information to the rest of us that we'd never gather ourselves.

This is where you're getting into fanatical territory...

THIS ONE'S A NO-BRAINER...

Yes. There are plenty of performers "out there" who equal and indeed surpass Prince's musical gifts.
