New CD - 2/6/07 A guy from Rolling Stone was on the "Today" show this morning and said the new album will be released 2 days after the Super Bowl.

Just saw that one too. Then I dug around online...nothing. If he's doing his one-shot-deal-with-a-major-label thing then they would be promoting it in some fashion. That's what you use a major for, right? I hope its true...but it's puzzling. Maybe he'll do a Musicology-type giveaway at the Superbowl and at Hard Rock. That's a promotion-and-a-half if he's putting up the $. Or maybe it will be online using 3121.com as the ressurrected npgmc.com... OK there's enough speculation (of course without substance) to get you through the day.

note to luv4u: please dont lock this on the grounds that there isn't a link...two folks have claimed to see it, we all know its a rumor...but if a major mainstream news outlet can discuss it, why can't we?
so let folks share their take on the news blurb... [Edited 1/1/07 10:52am] Space for sale...

I seriously doubt it. At the very most, that's when a new album would be announced. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

The guy also said that Prince would be touring this year. He may have just been rambling on without having much hard evidence.

If this is true then maybe it WONT be a mainstream CD--I can only hope and thank God.

My two cent prediction - a repackaged 3121 cd with additional songs, remixes and artwork.

I saw that too, but I don't think it will be released that soon, I can't wait for the tour though The guy is an entertainment editor at Rollingstone Magazine: www.rollingstone.com they have a tour date for Prince in florida at the end of January so stay tuned! [Edited 1/1/07 15:51pm]

[Edited 1/1/07 15:51pm] Can't really be called a tour date. Prince and the Paisley Park crew are saying it's a "warm-up" gig for the Super Bowl XL performance a few days later. Prince will be returing to Las Vegas right after the Super Bowl performance.

Entirely probable...
I think it's gonna be funky, and will sound like a cross between the Revolution era sound and the Lovesexy sound. Doubting Thomases get in line. The new stuff will having your ears ringing. "He's a musician's musician..."

Well it would make sense to perform at the Superbowl if he is going to release a cd a few days after the performance. If this rumor is true, I could see a commerical airing right after he performs during the Superbowl. That would be the best promotion for the cd. Who knows maybe he's performing a new song from a new cd.

Discuss... [Edited 1/1/07 6:51am] That's assuming he will use the normal channels of retail. I don't claim any special knowledge, and this is mere speculation on my part, but I think the new album (if there is one) might be distributed by the new online label just started by CBS (the network televising this year's Super Bowl): http://cbs5.com/topstorie...34712.html CBS plans to promote music on this label with their television assets, and what bigger television asset is there than the Super Bowl? The label was ostensibly started to save CBS music licensing costs from other labels by owning their own music content. Obviously with Prince he would want to keep ownership of his content, but perhaps in his case a more favorable licensing agreement between Prince and CBS could be worked out. In return for that, CBS could enable Prince to do an end run around radio and music video channels to get his music before the masses by featuring his music in high-profile TV shows. Why release another single and video no one is going to play anyway when you can have a song featured in an episode of CSI before millions of viewers? I know some of you might say that's "selling out", but radio and music video networks (when they still play videos) have decided only bubblegum pop and thugged-out hip-hop by and for teenagers has a place in the mainstream of popular music, so veteran artists like Prince will have to find other ways to get their music out there. Once again, this is just pure speculation on my part and I'm probably dead wrong, but I just thought I'd put it out there.

I hope it's true. Prince should use such an exposure as the superbowl to his advantage.Especially after the bad publicity of threatening the websites with a lawsuit. It would be the best time for him to release a new cd, but why not more news of it?

What lessons do you think Prince should have adhered to according to the results of 2006? Its way to early to see how this CD (if it exists) will be utilized.
