Prince is a performer. Sometimes he uses different, voice inflections, enunciations, pronunciations, and usage of grammar. He does this to convey humor, attitude, soul, etc. Sometimes he does is while singing, sometimes while talking during his performances. Sometimes he uses a haughty faux English accent, sometimes he uses street slang/ebonics. It depends what he is trying to convey. Many artists/singers/performers do this. Do you think all country singers have a natural twang in their voice? No. Do all rappers have broken english when they use their natural speaking voice? Nope. In linguistics terms this is called "code switching". It's simply speaking/sininging differently for different situations. It's mostly about style. Bottom line: I've never heard use a "fake accent" when speaking plainly (ala Madonna). However, Prince often employs different "voices" when performing/singing for theatrical effect. [Edited 1/21/07 8:40am] 2 this I'd like 2 add that Prince is very flexable linguistically, and can switch character voices in an instant. The poster is reffering 2 the times in interviews, etc, where Prince dips into some street, that's all. Alot of us do this... it's very common, and especially with someone like Prince who, as an artist, and one who expresses, and perhaps thinks in characters, also has a sharp sense of humor. definitely, his voice/speech depends on his mood, and it varies as widely as his musical styles nothing wrong with that My Legacy

He doesn't sound fake, he just changes from one moment to the next. Funny, though, I thought he was British when I first got 1999 way back when. In Automatic he says "Why do I love you so much" and it sounds like he has an accent. My Legacy

(come on, most if not all his band is now black) ...he started talking with a more black Dixieland accent Wake up children, dance the dance electric... there isn't much time.... who farted? ...was it u?

This is an interesting thread as I think most people will have some variation in how they speak depending on who they are addressing. I have lived in many places and am often asked where I am from because people cannot detect an "accent" with me. I guess I am truly a southerner, but being from the DC area I mostly ennunciate properly and often without an accent. I can put on a southern accent in certain circles, but ususally just talk like I always have.
My insanelaws are from NY and that can get really annoying when they all talk at once and loudly.

So where does the way he spoke in the middle of Nice France, after he fired the director and took over Under the Cherry Moon, fit into your theory? When they were trying to show that white girl "the real fun" in "our world" ? [Edited 1/23/07 17:59pm]

To be clear - No, he dosent fake an accent. He pops shit and uses alot of slang like millions of Black guys everywhere, everyday. And like most African Americans he prolly speaks better english depending on the business hes handling. Re: Miles, he may have said 'white'. I havent read the book in years. Thanks, that does my heart good.

Btw, if memory serves didnt Miles talk about how much people have to pretend in their day to day lives? And we're talking the highest levels of show business right? We all go into character. This board is exhibit A.
