John L. put out a CD titled "Father's Song" which, curiously enough, didn't contain "Father's Song".

I've got it at home, and I don't remember all the song titles, but I do recall there's one called "There'd Be No-Way for You and I".

A guitarist named Gemini is credited on the last song of the CD. Three guesses who that is, and the first two don't count...

They are credited to him but they may be a bit overstated. I've read that Prince may have given credit to John so that his dad could recieve royalties.

Miles

I agree with youngworld, co-crediting these songs was probably P. giving his ole' dad a bit of a pension.

But I might be wrong.

It would've been nice if P had let his dad play some jazzy piano on a released Prince track while P played guitar and sang.

John L's own CD sounds like an interesting curio, though. I'll bet I know who produced it ...

What youngworld and miles said is probably true, it's not sure if Prince really ever worked on any songs with his father.

Computer Blue contains Father's Song in the guitar solo,
hence the credit.

According to the book "D.M.S.R." Prince has NEVER actually released any songs co-wrote with his father. He gave his father writting credit to give him a boost for his financial well being.

I don't know if it's true but it was supported by David Z. and Bobby Z. and Matt Fink.

mac 'nuff said.

John L Nelson did release an album titled 'Father's Song' on 16th August 1994, on his daughter Sharon's independent 'Vibe Records' (Sharon Nelson Blackley is Prince's half sister). Four tracks from this album are actually circulating on both 'The Inner Sanctum' and 'Platinum' boots. The titles available are:

'Yes Again'(the vocal on this sounds suspiciously like Prince)
'There'll Be No Way 4 U & I'
'As I Recall'
'Falling Down'

In 1996 Liz Jones conducted an interview with Sharon, which was published in Jones' biog of Prince, 'Slave To The Rhythm'. Sharon says she persuaded her father to fly to New York to make the record. "Now, nowhere is there recorded my father playing the piano, and he is now eighty-one. It's called 'Father's Song'. I did the rap"

Both her vocal and "rap" are featured on the track 'There'll Be No Way 4 U & I'.

As for 'Father's Song' (from October 29th, 1983, featured in the film Purple Rain), this is what Susan Rogers, Prince's studio engineer at the time, had to say about it:

"Prince gave his father songwriting credit on many of his songs. I don't believe John Nelson wrote 'Father's Song'... I think Prince gave his dad songwriting credit mainly to help him financially".
