PURPLE RAIN VS. 8-MILE

Do you think that the movie "8-Mile" ripped off the story from Purple Rain, sure one movie is about a young rapper on the underground rap scene trying to
handle his personal demons, and the other is about a young musician on the underground rock scene dealing with his demons too, both movies mades mega stars out of each artist as well as household names and both had great soundtracks that won awards which movie do you think is better....i say Purple Rain wins without a doubt. biggrin prince and im from and live in Detroit and grew up on 8-Mile( the street the movie was made about) and im giving Purple Rain mad luv prince

I really didn't like 8-mile. Eminem plays a nasty character... him and his mom take advantage of that guy who they live with... Eminem beats that crap out of that one person... I don't get it. He's supposed to be the hero?

No, they are not the same.

Purple Rain: a hyped dream of making it.

8-Mile : a gritty real life drama of overcomming those things in life that might let be keep you down.
News: Prince pulls his head out his ass in the last moment.
Bad News: Prince wasted too much quality time doing so.

both movies are ones in which you're forever wishing the crap story to get out of the way so the film can get back to the music.

eminem is almost unarguably FAR better as an actor in 8 mile than prince is in purple rain though. though i loved prince in utcm much more than em in 8 mile

i tried to watch 8 mile ... cus i do like one or 2 eminems songs ...

unfortunately ... like alot of what has been said ... i dont relate AT ALL to the eminem charactor etc ... with the "kid" charactor in PURPLE RAIN ... as a guy ... i related to him "rebelling" about NOT BECOMING like his father ... i could really relate .... even tho he kinda slapped appolonia which my dad would never have done ... wink so in some ways he had some anti hero traits ... but the eminem charactor i could just never get .... plus the music didnt HIT ME like Prince's did ... i guess wink

As a piece of stand alone film-making I thik there's no doubt that 8-Mile's the better movie. But the soundtrack alone makes Purple Rain infinitely more enjoyable.

I live in Metro Detroit also and travel on or across the now infamous 8 Mile Rd daily. Even though Eminems movie was loosely based on his experience, there were a lot of creative liberties taken, just to sell the movie.

We're not mad at him for that but Detroiters know what's true and what's not. Especially those on the Eastside. wink

My choice...Purple Rain and not just because of Prince either. I thought they did a very nice job with assembling the cast and even Vanity's replacement. So much so that even after reading a copy of the script with Vanity's part in it, I still can't imagine it without Apples!

I just can't wait for his next film "Under the Wigger Moon," followed by his live concert film "Shady o' the Times," then his sequel to 8 Mile "Graffitti Mile," where he grows out his hair so he looks like He-man and he fights Dr. Morris Dre, the greedy producer who wants to own Shady's masters.

In the harrowing climax, Shady's angel/muse/girlfriend gets run over by Cadillac and he sings a beautiful gospel rap tune to save the day!

I'm from Detroit originally too, and for those who don't know, here's how our streets are named: Starting with 5 Mile, there is a parallel road every mile going North with a higher number. 8 Mile is the Northern-most border between Detroit and the suburbs (most of which are more affluent).

From 5,6 Mile to 8 Mile - a ghetto but there are pockets of well-kept homes
From 8 Mile to 16 Mile - Middle-class families of varying income (nicer homes)
From 16 Mile North - upper-middle-class to upper-class (beautiful homes and mini-mansions).

That's a generalization for the non-Detroiters. Downtown Detroit would probably be considered "Zero-Mile".

Oh, and the 3 1/3 that they keep talking about? The "313"? That's simply our area code in Detroit . . . the immediate suburbs are "810".

Hope that helps - I myself grew up on 6 Mile until I was 12. It became a ghetto in the late-70's/early 80s so we left.

Oh, and Purple Rain is my favorite, but I like the fact that Eminem has a day job in his movie (more believable).

Not anymore. East of Woodward is 810. West of Woodward is the 248. Also...5 Mile doesn't exist inside the city of Detroit, it's known as Fenkell. It turns into 5 Mile once you cross Telegraph and enter Redford. cool

No. It's a basic stock Hollywood plot: poor kid from the wrong side of the tracks makes it big with his magical guitar/rapping/spelling bee skills. It's been done God knows how many times.

Yeah, I was talking back in the day, when we were growing up.

It's like that in the northern suburbs too . . . 16 Mile=Big Beaver=Metro Pkwy., 15 Mile=Maple, 20 Mile=M59=Hall Road. smile

When were were growing up, there wasn't a 248 yet and 810 was still new eek

Let's go down 2 the holy river,

If we don't then we'll never see the light.

U'll have 2 come back and face the light.

Maybe I'm a complete moron but I thought that Coyote Ugly was a Purple Rain knock off...It was the same story but they switched the genders of everybody...(thats how no one caught it)

But I might have thought that because I was a brand new fan and I was out on a crasade yammering about how Prince did everything first, and everone is just being a prince knock-off. lol Thats what new fans do these days...
No matter the ©️, Paisley Park "official can never ™️ prince. He gave that to us verbally on Oprah in 1996. You can't take prince away from us, corporate. I mean O ( + >
