Hey there. I remember reading an article about prince doing a side jazz project at that time also. and when I saw first saw the tape, I had 2 get it. Cant believe it's been 20 yrs since the project came out. Seems like yesterday when it came out. 6 was a very good song 2 play on the radio, and also a good video. But in my opinion, 8 shouldve also been played on the radio also. But thats another story 4 another time. But all n all, happy 20th madhouse. Peace.

i don't think i got hip to 8 until around march or april of 1987...whenever the SOTT single first came out. i noticed 8 at the wrecka stow the day i found the new prince single, and felt like i stumbled across a super secret bonus album. i eventually lost my original vinyl copy, but a year or two ago, i found a copy at my local charity shop in perfect condition and i paid all of one dollar for it. woot!

I love Madhouse 8 - it was so new and fresh at the time. I remember the days of snatching up anything and everything with the Paisley Park logo on it!

biggrin

I did the same thing back in the day. I kept my eye on that logo anytime I went to the wreka stow. The minute I would see Paisley Park, without hesitation I would buy it. It took me a little while to get into Madhouse 8, but it has since become one of my favorite things Prince ever did. 8 and 16 still get continual play. Good stuff.

I think it's a great little album, I probably prefer 16 myself, but this is 8's day so... smile

...oh and props to the title track too, which is probably one of my fave Prince instrumentals.

I think with anything with the paisley park logo on the record was picked up by any and everybody who was into paisley park, cause I sure was 1 of them myself. Very good memories.

Geeze... is it that old allready??

Or, maybe i am just getting old quickly wink

One of the best albums released on Paisley Park records imo

A nice balance between organic, jazzier cuts and more funky, electronic sounds.
Madhouse is definitely experimentating with the tag of 'jazz-rock' or 'fusion' on this one. Especially the closing track '8' is a creative ballad, it always reminds a lot of Condition of the Heart.

My main problem with their second album, 16, was / is that its all too minimalistic, samey, lacking interesting idea's. I would give a 6/10 for '16' for that reason, while '8' is good enough to deserve a big 8 / 10

I love Madhouse.

Whenever I'm in the mood for Prince, but can't think of what I want to listen to, often this is what I put on.
