Honestly, I don't think he likes the sound of distorted guitar that much... it's always layered on synths...

That's what I liked least about the Parade tour-the lack of guitar playing by Prince.

You might be forgetting some b-side gems "She's Always in My Hair," for example, and "Alexis De Paris."

There's plenty of guitar soloing on ATWIAD: "America," "Paisley Park" and "Temptation" (that last one having some scorching leads).

It's more of a touch in Parade: distorted bass/guitar on "Girls & Boys," and the distorted guitar synth on "Anotherloverholenyohead."

I think he was being challenged to "paint" with a wider variety of colors in that phase (and, yes, I credit Melvoin and Coleman for that). Those sounds and approaches and concepts took him a bit away from what was most familiar, the distorted funk of Dirty Mind and Purple Rain.

He usually restricts his guitar playing on albums way more than live. And on some albums, like parade, the guitar is almost absent.

I wouldn't call that a guitar hero complex tho' but a multi instrumentalist syndrome, coupled to a narcistic drive to prove himself and the world that he 'never' repeats himself.

When people say 'guitar' around here, why do they only ever mean lead guitar?

There's plenty of great funky rhythm guitar on 'Parade' - eg 'Kiss', one of his signature funky guitar songs. And I think there's a jazzy guitar part on 'Do U Lie' (tho not sure as haven't played it for ages).
