It's a great record and if you get a chance to listen to it on a decent surround sound stereo system or some nice headphones, do it. You will hear how much work went into it. Not as radio friendly as 3121 but still a great Prince album in my opinion. After getting all those free copies at the shows, I never gave it a chance but it is his best work since he left WB.

I'm sorry. but these are the type of comments which irk the heck out of me every single time. I insist to you that most people... a great majority of them... damned near all of them... with the exception of a few geeks and musicians into 'audio engineering' etc ... couldn't give a rats azz about minor distortions which most people's ipods... mp3 players.. cd stereo systems etc couldn't decipher to begin with.

Before you get upset... I have a similiar problem with motion pictures. Unlike the vast majority of people..who really dont care... I CANNOT watch a movie on DVD/Vdeo tape unless it is shown in its propor ratio. But I know this is due to my own sensitivity to the difference..and most people wouldnt notice any way.. so I don't bore them down with it.

OTHERWISE

Enjoy the album... if its the funkiest thing you have ever heard... then GREAT!

Why do people have to be such kill joys when a person finds something THEY like.

that is a very ignorant thing to say. There's MANY albums totally ruined by mastering.

Do you know hendrix was dissapointed by his mastering? He said after EL he was gonna oversee the mastering of all his albums.

If an albums sounds bad the 'most' that you talk about will probably think it's the production when in fact it's the engineering. Either way many people are bothered by the sound; why do THOUSANDS EACH WEEK buy zeppelin remasters? Why did the zep remastered box set go to number one?

DYNAMICS my friend. Without dynamic range music sounds rubbish.

Do you know the bit in LTC with the vocal distortion, turn it right up and listen on a quality system; imagine that for 60 minutes; that's what some albums are like.
Why would you not want the best sound? Do you not enjoy bass playing or drums/guitars? Well the sound of what you hear could be much better when engineered well; that's why MJ'S mixer bruce swedien sometimes worked weeks on a mix of one song. Listen to the albums; brilliant sound!

I will simply quote myself, "I insist to you that most people... a great majority of them... damned near all of them... with the exception of a few geeks and musicians into 'audio engineering' etc ... couldn't give a rats azz about minor distortions which most people's ipods... mp3 players.. cd stereo systems etc couldn't decipher to begin with."

'Best Sound' is purely objective and qualifying only to the sensitive ears of those who really think about those things. Its like those technical awards at the Oscars.... most people go to the bath rom during those awards ..cause they really couldn't care less. Can we hear it good enough..? if the answer is yes... then that is simply... good enough... period.

In ther words..... for most people .. it ain't that serious. Heck... I come from an era when you were happy to listen to a dubbed cassette and the biggest issue you had was the noise reduction on your sony walkman.

As a musician and a listener I totally agree. Too much is made out of sound quality, i always thought cd's were a conspiracy myself, to make people replace catalogs they already had. Never thought the sound quality was that noticeable or important. The only music I'm picky about when it comes to sound is my own, I rarely fell other peoples' music has been mixed or mastered or engineered wrong. You dont, and you can't pay attention to every little possible noise in music anyways. The major parts of songs have always been able to come across over different mediums, hell, Elvis only ever recorded one song in stereo in his life and I never think of that when I listen to him. Prince once said that none of his albums were mixed good, I was surprised by the statement because I don't notice anything done wrong. He sometimes rushed his songs too much but other than that, most of his stuff is fine by me.

Im hip to Prince since 1983 I was like 13 when I bought My first Prince album and that was some years ago, about this album Musicology considering this is Prince we are talking about imo I think its one of his least consistant albums personally I like about 5 tracks the rest of the album I just eeem yeah but as for the good tracks 1)Musicology ...nice nod to JB reminds me of hotpants and when Prince says "fool get back" his voice sounds like Dave Chappelle hehe , 2)Call My Name, 3)Cinnamon Girl, 4)What do You want Me to do, 5)Reflection.

Musicology was a good album and all, but Prince just played it safe and made an album that was straightforward. I was glad to see that he was finally making some music that alot of his pop and soul fanfare could listen to. It's not one of those albums I play on a regular basis, but it was a highlight of his career and I loved every minute of it, even though the album had some flaws. 3121 is a better record, though.
