Random amazon customer disses the hell out of Prince

I was searching amazon for cds to buy and found this;

Last word on the poser Prince, September 19, 2006

Reviewer: E. Herbert "EJH" (Massachusetts) - See all my reviews

The other reviewers have covered the quality of this tribute - it has to be the best of the many that have been attempted. Jimi's legacy to rock music and his impact is still growing (listen to the guitar work on the new Chili Pepper's lp for instance). Unfortunately - the poser Prince is on this tribute cd. FYI - ladies and gentlemen - many, many years ago - around the time Purple Rain was released, I saw an interview with Prince on TV. In that interview he proclaimed to the interviewer and the world, and I quote, "I'm a better guitarist than Jimi Hendrix EVER was....". Now the only response I had at that time (once my dropped jaw left the floor and returned to it's normal position) was to walk over to my coffee table, pick up my copy of the Purple Rain LP, and smash it to bits against the corner of the table. It felt good. I gather when Prince cashed his check for his egotistical contribution of "Purple House" he neglected to mention his previous comments about Jimi. Prince - what a poser and a fraud and a has been that never was. Jimi was the best

He's entitled to his own opinion. Why can't he hate Prince? He can.

You're dissing the hell out of Jesus with your name, but I don't complain - it's your opinion.

LOL, yes. It's amazing but before 2004, I don't think Prince ever acknowledge the *existence* of Jimi Hendrix.

So, the Amazon poster is full of it.

there was one interview...it might have been the '85 rolling stone interview?...where prince said he copped more from santana than hendrix, but i've never interpreted that as a dig at jimi or his talent/legacy. he was just stating a fact about how he plays guitar. shrug

How can he get so mad for Prince saying so (which I don't think he has) that he smashes the LP into pieces? Someone needs anger management... confused

I've seen most every tv interview or performance has done via online clips and the like and I've never seen one where he says he plays better than Jimi and I'm willing to bet it doesn't exist. So this guy is building his hate on mis-information from the very beginning.

Ermm, that's not true, he's played Jimi covers now and again. On '2045 Radical Man' he even mentions Jimi: "James Brown, Chuck D and Jim/Turn me up louder now/I don't
think y'all hear me"

only thing prince ever said about jimi back then was..that people assume he's a guitarist into Hendrix just because of the color of his skin.

yes, it was something like that or that he's only compared to Hendrix for that reason. Since the amazon poster said TV, I can only assume it was that rather strange MTV interview he did to release the America video. I have that on VHS but it's stored elsewhere!
anyone out there who can pull that out?

You're probably right; I meant that during the Purple Rain days, I only remember him mentioning Carlos Santana as an influence. The name of Hendrix was rarely if ever mentioned.

But back then, he didn't mention James Brown either, and you can *clearly* see his influence in the dance moves at Syracuse.

In any case, I don't think Prince has ever said he was a better guitarist than Jimi. That was the whole point of my post.

But now you've intrigued me! What covers of Jimi's tunes has Prince done other than "Red House / Purple House" and where did they appear?

Did you catch the All Along the Watchtower cover from this morning's Howard Stern?

I don't know about Prince saying he was better than Jimi... He said that Santana played "prettier" than Jimi... plus he said that he didn't play like Hendrix and people were just comparing the two because they were both black. I think that was a very stupid thing for him to say... The Jimi influence is there... I don't know what changed afterwards that got him to acknowledge that Jimi influenced him... he seemed to be hiding it for some reason.

Prince was asked sometime in the early-mid 80s about comparisons between him and Jimi- Prince's response was "he's dead isn't he?"

I guess this guy is still kinda mad about that, huh?

As I keep saying, although Hendrix made it famous All Along The Watchtower is by Bob Dylan.

I know Prince has done Voodoo Child/Chile live, many say that Habibi is basically a cover of Machine Gun, and the drum track of Tick, Tick, Bang was sampled from Little Miss Lover.

Come now, Prince has always had enough sense and class not to say such things. I've seen and read just about every interview and he has never said anything close to "being better than Jimi". In the MTV interview he said Jimi was good but that they only get compared because they are both black. Prince did lie through his teeth but he never, NEVER dissed Jimi. His ego kept him from admitting just how much of an influence he had over him but with songs like "Purple Rain" being his most popular and the way and the mannersisms with which he played his guitar makes it plain that Jimi was his role model on the guitar. There is some Santana and others but the playing is primarily Jimi and he knows it.
