i agree with cborgman and purpleknight...
prince is a grown man and i'm sure he didn't lose any sleep over either situation. you also have to remember that rosie was being rosie and prince was being prince. anyone (famous or not) that changes their name to a symbol deserves to be ridiculed and joked about. and the whole jt thing was nothing.

look, i don't like rosie or jt (and no not because of these situations), but is it really necessary to have your avatar as a pic of jt with devil horns??? it's all very childish. anyway, if these episodes bother you that much, you may want to seek counseling.

Uh gee...um...guess I picked the wrong side on this argument. Yeah, you see, um, the problem is that I rented this bulldozer and bought like a thousand copies of JT's CD and I was going to like, um, run them over and whatnot. And now I don't know what the hell to do.

Prince is so cool about stuff like this,so these 2 "disses" had very little impact.Just makes Rosie and Justin look stupid, that's about all.

Gotta let it go Gottaletitgo.

One of the most important thing in life is to learn to laugh at oneself and let others tease you, with more or less affection. If Prince hasn't learned to do that by now, then he must be pretty constipated, seeing that he's been the punchline to so many jokes in his career. He has a great sense of humor so I think he can take a little joke that lasted about two seconds from a guy who's on record as an admirer of his work -- and I mean that in both meanings of the word "record".

i'm sorry, but i didnt think taffy was that out of line. the name change was idiotic. i understand WHY he did it with the contracts as they were, but being so serious ("god told me my name is this unpronouncable symbol") about it instead of just saying "hey, due to this contract, i can't release under prince" was an insanely stupid move, and joke worthy.

Neither incident was anything to cry over. Prince on the one hand leaves himself wide open to being made fun of and on the other hand sometimes takes himself too seriously. As a result, Prince does something that ends up in someone poking fun, and the fans go apeshit, crying foul and tearing their hair out over some over-hyped slight.

Let it go people.

Justin Timberlake ADORES Prince. If you have a video of that Beyonce-Prince Grammy performance ... at the end Justin turns to his mom grinning and smiling and mouths something like "that's great" or "that's hot."

There's a difference between teasing with love, as Justin did, and being mean-spirited.

There was one awards show where Chris Rock (oscars) made fun of some actors as not being real actors. IT was not received well. Neither was Rock's hosting of MTV awards when he dissed some entertainers in attendance.

This audience would have rejected JT as other audiences did C.Rock had the behavior actually been insulting.

I thought that happened with Jamie Foxx? Or am I thinking of a different award show? confuse

I remember Foxx as the host of some award show making drunk jokes at the expense of Backstreet Boy AJ and the crowd just jeering and booing like nothing else.

It could have been worse. Timberlake could have said that Prince had a small p*nis.

Gotta can be pretty damn uptight sometimes. I think he misses the Captain.

The Captain will not speculate. I'm just saying that it would be the worse possible insult that JT could have hurled at him. Talking about a guy's height is one thing but saying he's not packing, that's a whole different story.

She was being a douchebag and saying shit like "I have a new nickname for you... TAFKAP.. the artist formerly known as prince... I KNOW I'LL CALL YOU TAFFY!! HA HA HA"

and he said "You know what Taffy rhymes with, don't you? It rhymes with goodnight."

She promptly shut up, but was still a dumb bitch.

I'm pretty sure Rosie can't be credited for TAFKAP, as a lot of people used that abbreivation to refer to Prince at the time. The "Taffy" thing is all hers though. I thought it was cute. shrug

i personally think jt diss was much worse.
JT made fun of prince's physical attribute.
that's not cool. making fun of prince by imitating him is one thing.
but he poked fun at his short stature.

well in a way prince did it to himself.
he should have kept his mouth shut and stop appearing on every award show.

I know that even Prince himself appears to be over this at this point (inviting Mr. Timberflake to his Globe after-party) but the whole incident still gnaws at my hide. I am a big awards show fan and have been my whole life. I have see virtually every Grammys, Emmys, Oscars, Globes, and even the bastard child of award shows, the People's Choice Awards, over the last 20 years. In all that time I cannot recall anyone ever dissing an artist who was not in attendance. The whole point of these award shows is to celebrate the achievement of someone so how would anyone think it would be prudent to turn a winner into an object of ridicule. JT made a colossal blunder with his awards' show shenanigans and I would think it just as inappropriate and wrong if he would have turned his juvenile humor on someone who was not my favorite musician.

That being said, I do have a sense of humor about the man (see any of my comments about "The Rainbow Children" or "Graffiti Bridge") and understand that he puts himself up to be the object of parody with many of his decisions, both personal and professional. I have laughed along with many of these (of course the Dave Chappelle basketball skit and the almost worshipping "Prince Show" deserve mention) and only really found fault with the attacks that were personal or mean-spirited. I can definitely laugh at Tommy Davidson doing a parody or Prince going into a McDonald's and ordering food to the tune of "Sign O the Times" but I thought the Prince parody with Billy Crystal singing "I Am the World" in the 1985 SNL skit was below the belt. It's all about context and intent and while most Prince lampooning I can laugh at, there are just some instances that are harder to tolerate.

The JT incident reminded me of the ill-fated Rosie O'Donnell appearance in 1996. Here Prince had agreed to do her show and was very respectful of the hostess. Her extended gag about the name change which visibly made Prince uncomfortable was out-of-bounds and I wish Prince would have gone through with his threat of saying goodnight and leaving that witch on stage with dead air. Ask about it once, that's fine, you're trying to answer a question the public wants to know. But his unwillingness to play along should have shut the door right there. Instead she asks him if she can call him "Taffy" and the audience of mindless drones titters in glee.

Should a host ask probing questions of a guest? Yeah, if it's "60 Minutes" or "Larry King" and said artist has agreed to such probing. But on the fricking "Rosie O'Donnell" show, Prince has to be brow-beaten when there was so much else that could have been discussed. I remember going on a couple of Rosie chat boards after the incident and berating the hostess for her inappropriate behavior and her little minions defended her and called P. weird and unfriendly. He was friendly enough to go on the show, wasn't he? Rosie acted like an ass in that interview and her treatment of Prince was indefensible.

So in this corner, you have an award presenter making fun of someone not there to receive their award, completely destroying any semblance of award decorum. In the other corner, you have a talk show host so desperate for laughs that she skewers someone who has agreed to come on her show and promote his album, which is really the only thing shows like Rosie's were good for. Which was a worse slight?

All I know is they both pissed me off.

As far as Rosie's show, after reading about it but not seeing it, it appears that the point is that Prince didn't leave: he just joked around with her in a way to let her know that he wasn't going to be reduced to being called Taffy. He handled it in a professional manner, and then did his job which was to be interviewed and then perform. She could joke about him, but he wasn't going to allow her to disrespect him as a guest on her show. I think Rosie actually did her job, too, as a comedian--and Prince allowed her to do that. But I think he was just stating that he would only go so far with her jokes and wouldn't allow her to "win," so to speak at his expense while his ass was sitting there right in front of her. Of course, if he hadn't been there, then she could do say what she wanted. But it just appears Rosie seems to respect Prince for his talent, at least. I think I read somewhere on here that she or the rest of the women even defended him on The View--well they said that they didn't think JT's joke was very funny or maybe it wasn't the time or place to be making a joke like that.

Regarding JT, he annoys me. I just don't like the guy even though he might be the most talented performer, ever taking the stage. He's just very ewww to me. That said, even I just think he was being silly with his mocking of Prince. I don't think he intended any disrespect to Prince at all. Now, I can understand why fans or some others might think joking about Prince's height was disrespectful and inappropriate given the situation, but as far as the people actually involved, I don't think anybody else really looked at it that way. I'm sure Prince would have NO PROBLEM with setting some limits with Justin--like he set limits with Rosie on her show. But it appears that Prince actually took the high road as far as the inviting the guy to after parties and whatever. So...it's really more about the way Prince responded than Justin remarks. Prince behaved professionally, so that's the end of that.

Shame on JT!! That would have been his opportunity 2 show his love and admiration 4 Prince and could have simply said, "It's an honor 2 accept this award in behalf of Prince." His shorty joke was in bad taste and lacked class; but then again considering he dated Cameron Diaz, I'm not surprised at his behavior.

Both disses bite the big one.

I don't think hosts should make their guests uncomfortable, but don't tell that to David Letterman: he's made an empire out of making his guests uncomfortable. I've been a fan of his for about 15 years now, and he has mellowed out a whole bunch over the last couple of years. But I remember several times before that I've had to get up and turn off the TV because he made his guests SO uncomfortable, it made ME uncomfortable. (Prince, don't go on THAT show!)

i find it hard to believe conan would book anyone every night for a week and even harder to believe prince would agree to it.
