New Power Soul

Okay, I put this on yesterday and it was actually pretty funky. Love the 'strapped to the body, making loving to the strings' moment on Come On. What parts of songs do you dig about this album. Also, is there any history / interesting facts behind any of the songs. I just wanna listen to this again with a new positive vibe, and am hoping to be inspired with your thoughts.

P.S. Not particularly interested in hearing any of the 'that was a crap song/album' comments, just cuz we've all heard that often enough. Thanks!

New Power Soul has a classy look and feel to it from the cover to the music...smile

I like the entire CD, but when I first heard it, I played 'Mad sex' over and over again. 'Until U're in my arms again' is nice also. I haven't heard it a while though, I've been playing other songs, but thanks for reminding me. I'm going to play it and come back! wink

Well, that rules out a response from me I guess!!

If I had to choose a song, it would be "Wasted Kisses". I really find it to be the only song of interest on that CD. Maybe I'll put it on again in a couple of years & see if my opinion has changed on it.

I love this album! I remember putting it on for the first time and not taking it off the cd player for at least 3 weeks. The whole vibe and sound of all the songs just put me in a good place. Come On and Mad Sex were instant favourites but the whole album is a must for any Prince fan. music

I think a lot of fans that don't like NPS don't like it because they want or have tried to make the album out to be something it is not. When I listen to NPS, I listen to it mostly as great "party" album mostly for dancing and having a good time.

I think it's funny how so many fans dissed the album, but yet, when you go to the Celebration and the DJ plays Come On, Mad Sex, or Freaks on this Side the crowd goes wild. So I've come to the conclusion that the Prince fans that don't like NPS are people that don't know how to just let go and have a good time and probably don't enjoy dancing. A little "anal" perhaps? wink

Fuck yeah...New Power Soul was very under8ted by the fans especially. I du agree also on the fact that it IS A NPG album not just PRINCE. Usually NPG albums are underground like, but this was the only one on real "retail"

"When U Love Somebody" has got 2 be one of the best Prince songs of the 90's. Although I would edit out the rap. The drums are phat and kickin.

"The One" had people in my class singing when I was in high school ... I mean ghetto folks!

I'm just waiting for the NPS haters to rain on this love-fest. I've always loved the CD, and I've found myself defending it many times on other threads.

For me, "The One" and "Funky Music" are the best on the CD. I also loved seeing him peform "Push It Up" and "Freaks On This Side" LIVE in Oakland '98 - before the CD was released. I've always wondered where he recorded the live crowd intro to "Freaks On This Side" - it coulda' been US, cause that's exactly how we sounded!

Yeah ppl gonna talk a lot trosh about NPS but put that joint on at a party and see folks hit the floor. The heavy basslines and beats were made to be played in a loud system in a club... put it on and folks get down. It accomplishes its mission. It's for the dancin freaks not the ones who stand around with their arms folded.

I really love When U Love Somebody, Makes me wanna get up and dance. Why would you edit out the rap? So you like 2/3 of a song, I don't get it.

{"The One" had people in my class singing when I was in high school ... I mean ghetto folks!

What are Ghetto folks?

I bought this CD and test drove it from Hawaii to Atlanta. and must say, Had the best trip of my life. I am sure NPS had something to do with it. Peace

I thought the album was called "Newpower Soul" actually. "New Power Soul" is an entirely different body of work altogether. Not to nit-pick, but...

P.S. A party album? How can you even consider dancing to most of the tracks? "Freaks On This Side"? What, are you going to jive to "Mad Sex"?

Nova's probly thinking of the instrumental on Exodus. "H-heey... play me some o' those 45's you got ova there..."

I consider that pathologically picky, but that's me.

Oh, and I dig parts of NPS, too. The One and Come On are classics; some are okay; When You Love Somebottey and a few others I can't stand.

Okay I will go out on a limb and criticise this so-called great "party" album.

Because...

The only songs that really have some "Prince" into it (as in his genuine voice, compositions, arrangements and beats), are... The One, Come On and Wasted Kisses.
The rest of the songs sometimes have their moments, but are IMO largely wasted by the over-produced clinical overall sound of it, ... the dreadfully boring computer programmed "beats" (I would rather call them "tick tocks")... and the very (below) average quality of the songwriting. NPS to me sounds very uninspired and not like a true Prince album at all.

NPS also is not called a real Prince album, rather it is from "the new power generation"( whatever that was those days). But still he did this trick with using his symbol. NPS made this become confusing and tired. But strangely that didn't withold Prince to put HIS pictures all over the booklet... That just doesn't make sense, is it a Prince/prince album or a NPG album???

NPS' lyrics don't sound inspired either. To me they have nothing new or exciting to bring. There is not general theme, no interesting insights in to his thoughts on certain matters, no nothing really interesting or even emotionally touching. They are mainly just empty sounding "party songs"... like NPS (the title song), Push it up, freaks on this side, I like funky Music...
or cheesy love songs (Untill you are in my arms again) and ridiculous attempts to remain "sexy", but with an underlying much more "prudent" message, that hardly anyone will get (Mad sex).
New Power Soul, the title song, screams about his "one and only duty"... which supposedly is: "keeping the crowd moving"... I never saw that as his "one and only duty" and never heard him hint to that before... to me that just sounded very shallow and superficial.
I really thought he had lost it...

Well call me a modern r&b/hip-hop hater, but the beats he uses are no more than incredibly slick sounds from the hit factory of KAJ productions selling prince a ticket of "respect" into the modern day "r&b" world with the ever so interesting computer to guide us through it, instead of a true funky drummer... Ever noticed how much this sound grew so commercially viable AFTER the release of NPS??? These computerbeats with lame tired repeating melodies and lyrics are now all over the MTV and commercial radio. ... Prince apparently still knew what music was to be "popular"... but I don't care about that and I thought and still think it sucked... just another sell-out to commerce.

Last remarks, but not least, the album doesn't ROCK... at all, there is only a restrained guitar part in "When U love somebody"... But damn... "every now and then it might rain"???
Wow "great" lyrics...from a 40 year old...
The album doesn't really FUNK either... "I like funky music" is an embarassing title for a song that isn't even half as funky as his most funky songs. The yelling in "Freaks on this side" hurts my ears and the beat is boring as hell. If I have to dance to a slowed down beat like that, when I have cd's full of Prince songs with truly exciting rhytms to REALLY dance to, then I must really not be into modern day "R&B"...
"Push it up"?? ... the lyrics are okay, but again, it is not really Prince... I can't even hear him sing one line.

All in all the only truly good songs are Come On, because it is the only truly funky song. The One, because it is a good ballet and the bass is very nice. And lastly Wasted Kisses because it has a good melody, but it IS literally wasted, by keeping it so short and hidden on an album full of filler tracks.

Give me TRC, the Truth, TGE, Come, D&P, even the entire Graffiti Bridge album, and all his 80's work over NPS any day.
Sorry for the ones who do like NPS, to be such a naysayer about this particular album, but that's just the way I see it.
You are not my "friend" because you threaten my security.

This one grew on me...didn't like too much when it first came out, but it now has become one of my faves from P. So what if is not so "experimental" or doesn't sound like Prince on some of the tracks...it still a jam. The title track, When U Love Somebody, Shoo-be-doo (gets in my head and I'm singin it all day!), The One, and Come On are all classics to my ears.

That first track on headphones just kicks some major behind.

Give it another chance...as we all know P albums have a funny way of growing on you.

NPS was always meant to be taken as a light party album just to groove too, but it did end up becoming Prince's last good album. The Truth doesn't count, since it was recorded in 97.

TRC and Rave are just lackluster.

Oh thank you sooo much Nettie! I didn't know another person existed that likes that song. I love "Until Your In My Arms Again" I think it's a beautiful song, it reminds me of "Diamonds and Pearls"

As for the New Power Soul album. I love that too, as I've said often, it's extremely rare that Prince writes something that I just outright dislike. I'm not a jock-rider or nothing. It's just that he feels me and I feel him.

The One
Wasted Kisses
Until Ur In My Arms Again
Come On

Another (in my opinion) underrated album...among many.
