A lot of people feel that Prince just made Chaos & Disorder just to fill out the rest of his obligations on his contract with Warner Bros, so he can make way to do his Emancipation album without Warner bros. So he really didn't really care what he released to Warner Bros. And the Vault is that long awaited album, songs that we heard legends and rumors he has kept in his vault, songs that he'll never release. So when word got out that they was going to release some on a album, we could'nt wait to buy it. Which album stinks more and why.

Neither 1 stinks,bcuz I think they're both great!

I like them both, but Chaos and disorder sounds more cohesive to me. The vault sounds truly like a bunch of stuff you throw into a fruitcake.

the vault is kind of a "take it or leave it" odds and sods collection, but i do think there was a bit of a concentration on jazz-tinged material which i find kinda interesting.

i really like chaos & disorder. it may be the last badass symbol-era prince album, and it has that angry/ranty rebellious streak that i love in prince. i can do without the silly bargain basement rappers, but minus that, i think it's a fun album that's been overshadowed by the fact that it's supposed to be a "screw you" to WB.

Saying "which one is worse" is not really a good question. You are putting both albums in the negative based on your opinion. Saying "Which one do you prefer more"...might be a better way of putting it.

Chaos & Disorder is one of his best albums imo, whereas The Vault is beautifully jazzy. I wouldn't want to miss either of them!
But I'd say, Chaos & Disorder is more 'essential' for a new record-buying Prince fan than 'The Vault'.

I love the guitar playing on C&D, but the Vault was a great collection of songs. It gets my vote for the better disc.

I happen to quite like both albums, they're quite unique in that they are two of the only Prince albums to focus completely on one genre of music, Rock & Jazz respectively. I think 'C & D' works better as an album but 'The Vault' has a collection of stronger material overall.

The Vault.

Switch out a couple of tracks (you know the ones) on C&D, and you have a real cracking album.

Put some of the CB stuff like 'What's My Name', 'Da Bang' or 'Calhoun Square' on there.

I liked much of Chaos and Disorder. I Like It There was worth the entire cost of the disc all by itself. He gave us so much material in 1996.

I truly like them both! (And I don't love ALL of his albums, by the way) Chaos had the guitar heavy sound I crave from Prince, and The Vault had some classy, jazzy sounds. They both show the diversity of Prince's musical offerings.

I dig a good selection of songs on both albums.

I like both of them. C&D is edgier, The Vault has a great bluesy consistency to it. The Vault was the biggest contract filler of the two, since Prince just used previously recorded material, whereas C&D he did write new songs specifically for it.

It's hard to say.

At first, "Chaos and Disorder" gave me a huge headache. And there are several songs I just couldn't stand on there like "Right The Wrong", "I Rock Therefore I Am" and a few others. In retrospect, I like it a lot more.

"The Vault" was immediately inviting and warm. I think song for song it's stronger, although stuff like "Sarah" doesn't do much for me.

For being contract fillers, it's clear that a lot of thought went into selecting a batch of tracks from a fairly consistent era and sound. I appreciate that Prince and WB tried to put together something that played well as an album. For that, they're both decent albums.

I declare a tie.

I like The Vault better though - one of my favorites of the 90's. I find it quite consistant in its bluesy, jazzy sound. Put "When the lights go down" on repeat for a whole day, and step into a beautifully meditative mode.

Just to clear that up for you: Both albums were compiled, and delivered to Warners at the same time. With C&D released then, and The Vault to be released at a later date. So any opinions that Prince had a laissez faire attitude towards the material on C&D can equally be directed at The Vault.
