One of the stronger cuts on the album...it's a shame the uptempo stuff on Rave doesn't match up to most of the ballads.

I LOVE that song!
There's something so "Sheneneh" about the way he begins "Y U screamin?!"- I picture the eyes rolled up in the head, the "talk to the hand"/"hand on the hips" expression.... Also I love the honesty of a guy who says "...I still smell like the very last time that U & I..." (okay, ewww.... ) [Edited 1/25/07 10:27am] "Love Hurts. Your lies, they cut me. Now your words don't mean a thing. I don't give a damn if you ever loved me..." -Cher, "Woman's World"

One of my favorites on the Rave album. Some people think I'm kinda cute
But that don't compute when it comes 2 Y-O-U.

You know I'm not a man of war....
Simply put: "No fighting allowed in the realm of truth with GOD first in the heart, war does not enter in." If you are truly in love, with the deepest and truest sincerity, then chaos does not enter in, due to the fact that, you respect the PEACE GOD gives to you and in thru you to another, there is a pure peace. This is called true love... A place that used to reside ... in eden until... Therefore, you know I'm not a man of war! (says it all). He what I feel is saying (I will not fight with you!) period! I wish we all could have that type of discipline to notice words with negativity never shows true love. Take care, SingMia

Love it. Definitely an underrated balled. There's a sorta vulnerability there that you don't find often in Prince songs.

It made me sad when I first heard it, because I was sure that it meant their relationship was over. Wanna hear me sing? www.ChampagneHoneybee.com

A simpering, manipulative, passive aggressive whine. Along with I Love U But I Don't Trust U Anymore, he plays the weepy victim, admits no wrongdoing on his part, and issues nothing but accusation and condemnation. It's a wallow in self-pity while smearing his lover--I find it cheap, full of guile, treacherous even.
Dark was his last convincing heartbreak ballad. That one had the gumption to go all out with the hurtful resentment. And it's musically tighter.

... but sometimes it's just like that. There are always 2 sides to every "breakup", and this was his. We've all sat with our friends whining about how "we didn't do anything- it just happened..." at one point or another. Dark was his last convincing heartbreak ballad. That one had the gumption to go all out with the hurtful resentment. And it's musically tighter.
I do agree, tho, that "Dark" is beautiful! Probably my favorite Prince ballad. "Love Hurts. Your lies, they cut me. Now your words don't mean a thing. I don't give a damn if you ever loved me..." -Cher, "Woman's World"

I do agree, tho, that "Dark" is beautiful! Probably my favorite Prince ballad. Both make excellent points... I agree, it is a wallow in self-pity, but it's true that we all go through that. Or at least most of us It's a natural reaction, and to me feels very real in the song. Now, if we only had the other side of the story!
