Super Bowl; FAMU band 2 play with Prince UPDATE: January 18th 2006
'Marching 100' prepares to step high with Prince at Super Bowl in Miami The Florida A&M University Marching 100 is preparing to take the field with music superstar Prince during the halftime show at Super Bowl XLI in Miami. Band members said the invitation to perform Feb. 4 with Prince at NFL's biggest event came as a result of the 2005 Grammys, where members of the Marching 100 performed with musicians Kanye West and Jamie Foxx. http://www.thefamuanonline.com Serpan99 contributed 2 this article by the updated link confirming the story. Super Bowl XLI will take place Feb. 4 at Dolphin Stadium in Miami. The band has a history with the "Super Sunday" game, said Lindsey Sarjeant, Marching 100 assistant director. This year, the Marching 100 played the pre-game show at Super Bowl XXXIX in Jacksonville. In 1969, the band performed at Super Bowl III in Miami. Sarjeant said; "It's such an honor for us to do this. (It gives a) certain kind of positive visibility to the university." Twenty Marching 100 members performed with producer/rapper Kanye West and actor/comedian/singer Jamie Foxx at The 48th Grammy Awards in February. The Marching 100 also appeared in both of President Clinton's inaugural parades and has performed in Paris on the Champs Elysees. Alumni of the band are excited of another Super Bowl performance. Victor Gaines played with the Marching 100 from 1984 to 1991. Gaines said; "It's a great opportunity for the band, and I look forward to them putting on an awesome performance." Gaines hopes that alumni still show up in Miami even if they can't get tickets to the game. "It'd be nice to see the alumni come out and support them and tell them, 'Have a great show.' ” 4 more nfo; http://www.thebumpsquad.com Http://www.myspace.com/thebumpsquad [Edited 1/18/07 23:05pm] Silence Speaks A Thousand Words.

Prince would have to spend a week working out new names for each and every player!!! And then, when it comes to that 'moment' in the setlist: "OK ... I want to take this opportunity to introduce you to the band ... on twirling baton and kazoo we have ... Tony M??? ... so that's where you've been!!" ALT+PLS+RTN: Pure as a pane of ice. I hear ya! These haters better lay off the FAMU Rattlers right now. This is one of the most notable HBCUs in the US and their band ROCKS THE HOUSE! I'm not an alum but I want to send my son. A show like that could be unforgettable. spelling edit [Edited 12/24/06 5:26am] Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

I'm glad you changed your mind. Tell ya what, he likes trying different things and another thing is this band would be up to whatever challenge he could give them, believe me. I've seen the Marching 100 many times. They work hard and they'll get it right. They don't always dance suggestively either. They can do any type of show he puts together. It would be another plus for the family friendly image the NFL wants to project. A pro education type thing, ya know? Love your idea about the symbol! Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

Oh it only took a few minutes b4 I changed my mind, I think it can work out great after a good rehearsal...if only as a great intro 4 his own performance. I hope it will happen

I loved that version Fleetwood Mac did when they did that reunion concert and had the marching band come up and surround the stage. The thing is, which song would suit a marching band? I can think of an obvious one - Sign O' The Times with all the drums coming on at the end like they used to do with the band.

serpan99 said: Oh wow! great news! I hope it happens that would be cool if he did. I took some courses at that University when I lived there,(Tallahassee, FL-was my second home)and both my nieces graduated from FAMU. Their marching bands is definitely one of the best..you should see them perform during homecoming. [Edited 12/24/06 10:49am] [Edited 12/24/06 10:49am]
