Ever been "this close" to seeing Prince?

This has happened to me twice and with the same relative...

About two years ago, I was on vacation in Atlantic City. While we were on vacation, my family and I celebrated my birthday, but I found out that my aunt went to a Prince concert and I could have gone, if I knew.

Just last night, the same aunt said she was going to Las Vegas with her husband for his job for about a week, and that they will be staying in the Rio. If my aunt knew that I liked Prince (when, I think, it's very obvious) she said she would have let me go with her to Las Vegas.

neutral There was another time he was playing at a club, but I couldn't go because I had school the next day, and I was underage...

Have you ever been close to being able to see Prince, but then couldn't?

I was centre stage, 5 rows away from Prince. Saw him come on stage prior to the start of his ONA performance. smile

i was visitng new york city for the very first time as part of a college trip i'd been selected to go on. prince was playing at radio city on the symbol album tour (act I?) and if i would have known before i left, i'm sure i could have managed to at least get crappy seat tickets for it. i wasn't too disappointed, though - my first trip to new york kept me plenty occupied.

One time,
some one came aringing at my door.

I asked who it was.

The voice on the other side of the door responded in a very low bed-room tone,
"We're JW's and we were wondering if we could have a word with you."
Instantly, I told 'em to get the hell off'a my property.

It's was such a quick reaction,
that I didn't realize til much later that one of 'em could've been P hisself.

The same ONA show that Luv4U went to. I was in a production of Evita at the time, and in theatre, you can't just 'call in sick'. As I performed on my own stage, all I could think about was Prince performing at the Jubilee on the other side of town. He'd never been to Edmonton before, and I doubt he'll ever be back... sad

In April 1998, the guy I had just started dating (who was a huge Prince fan) bought tickets to a concert at the Rosemont...at the time I was only a casual Prince fan and therefore more annoyed at the fact he didn't remember I was going to be out of town for a friend's wedding than that I was going to miss the concert.

Looking back I know I couldn't have skipped the wedding (I was in it!), and I don't think the NPS shows were that great (a lot of Larry) but I'm still kinda sad that I missed it.
The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

Hah! Yes, Luv4u, I was working at the Mayfield. I was an npgmc member too, so could have made the soundcheck. But I now live in Toronto, so hopefully my odds are better here! razz

I remember I was at work the night Prince saw the truth at Trocodero's and my girlfriend got a text message from the girl we know that worked there like "Guess who is showing up here tonight??? PRINCE!!" We were like excited We were jumping up and down like thirteen year olds! If he would have played a set then I would have really been mad that I missed it. biggrin

I missed out on the Purple Rain show at the Cow Palace because of a "friend" and the Sheila E show in SF that was recorded that Prince and the Revolution showed up at, also because of the same "friend".

On the brighter side, I have been lucky enough to be really close a couple times. During the Musicology warm-up in Reno, I had front row tickets and Prince stood pretty much right in front of me before getting on stage during one of the instrumental breaks. I also was very close during the Musicology press conference performance, so I think that makes up for the missed opportunities in the old days.

As for the Musicology Reno show - here's a funny story. I brought a buddy of mine to the show, and when Prince rose up out of the stage my friend turned to me and said "You know, Prince is taller than I thought he'd be." I laughed because it was an elevated stage. Later, during the moment I mentioned where Prince was standing right in front of both of us, I turned to my friend and asked "Still think so?" and he laughed and said no.

For years I had always been so close to seeing Prince and things would happen. Tickets would sell out before I could get them. Once, I was set to get the tickets and ended up having to leave town for a family emergency. Then when I was in a town in the south near where he was going to be, I was going to get a ride from a family member. We were in the boonies and when we were about to go and get the tickets, we ended up with a flat tire and there were no spares around. At a One Night Alone Concert in NY I didn't have a ticket but decided to stand outside thinking maybe someone will need to sell a spare ticket. When someone actually had one, I'd accidentally left my wallet at home with my bank card in it. But....I got to see the after party because I went and stood in line at "The World" (which no longer exists) needless to say I was the first one there because everyone else was in the concert. I got to hear George Clintons concert from the outside who was performing there that night. The bouncer at the door said that Prince was not coming there for an after party but I was told differently and figured since George C. was there, P would show. The bouncer offered to take me with him to a Jay-Z party if he didn't show so I figured I would still end up having a good night. At last the manager came and said P was coming. I didn't have enough money to get in but someone wanted to cut in line and offered to pay half the ticket. I went for it and ended up right in the front of the stage. I was so close I could touch his pants leg when he stood in front of me. It was a great experience. Prince seemed to have everyone else performing instead of him though (Musiq, Alicia Keys, George C., Dougie Fresh) I did enjoy the little he did. The finale with Everlasting now was great. There was a point where he'd started singing one of my favorite songs and then he held the mike over me and four others as we finished it. What made up for my missing all the other times was the when I met him in NY when he took back his name after being TAFKAP. I posed as a reporter, asked the last question of the conference and when I tried to figure out which way he was leaving, someone said excuse me and it turned out to be one of his bodyguards. Next thing I knew, I was in the middle, touching arms and walking along side Prince. That was the best moment. It made up for everything. We shall meet again. I also saw him in Bryant Park this past summer smile

I was offered a free ticket to see the Purple Rain tour, but didn't go because it was during finals, and.... I wasn't into pop music back then.

In 1988 Eileen Murton who ran the unofficial (later sorta official) Prince fan club in the UK phoned to say that Prince wanted to meet about 20 fans during the soundcheck to that night's Lovesexy show at Wembly Arena (London). I was out & my dad 'forgot' to tell until the next day. My father was in the army and called him 'Ponce' - he didn't forgot, Prince was just a bad role model - being an uptight, macho trained killer is much better - clearly.

Well, living in the Twin Cities, I have been to Paisley Park many time and been close enough to smell him. As far as big concert venues go--my seat for the 1st St. Paul show of the Musicology Tour was row 1 seat 1. His mic stand was directly in front of me. Belive it or not, being "close" to Prince often actually makes you take it for granted and then you realzie that he is (GASP!), in fact, human.

When he was doing the ONA tour. I had a business trip to Portland OR and he was playing at a theatre downtown right around the corner from my hotel. Ofcourse the show was sold out so I waited around outside like a groupie...I saw them as they were leaving and yelled I love you Prince..He never looked up....I never told anyone about it...I feel like I'm on true confessions.....
