The Moment(s) that made you become a prince fan

For me the first time i started admiring prince was the low vocal part(so beutiful, beutiful in "the most beutiful girl in the world), i had of course known of him before that (purple rain and such) and always thought the edited sexy mf video shown on late night mtv was hilarious, once i seen the hits/b sides album in my fathers collection i was away and i havnt looked back since. please share your experiences

Watching him getting outta that bath in '84 was enough for me. No-one got out of baths in their videos back then.

cool

Anx

i was fascinated by him when i saw a pic of him in his shiny purple trenchcoat in a rolling stone yearbook issue, way back in '83.

it was the first time i heard the ending of 'let's go crazy' on a tv commercial the following spring that i had my first full-on fam attack. never been the same since!

Computer blue was playing on in my friend's mother's mini-van.

It was the first time I heard a stereo with that much bass, and with that much quality. The song blew me away.

and, as i've said about a million times before on this site,
the moment that made me a fan was seeing the i wish u heaven
video on tv just as the single was about to be released.

i ran out and got the album the next day and quickly collected
his back catalogue from there on.

When Doves Cry, summer of 1984, and the b-side 17 Days.

Kind of lost interest after that because I was too young to appreciate his music ( Hip Hop was my way of life back then , and I always liked a couple of songs but the Parade era killed it for me, now I love it).

Then my interest got re-ignited again through a friend of mine who made me a mixed tape that I still own and listen to to this day, studying his back catalog and hearing tons of bootlegs plus reading his biographies and, most of all, seeing him live renewed my interest.

But, all in all, it was When Doves Cry...the lyrics and the music and that he didn´t give a shit about how a young black male from Minneapolis was supposed to be like. There was a lot of stuff in his bio and in his music that I could relate to.
" I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

For me? When I was watching Saturday morning TV, and then they played Prince singing Purple Rain (from the film). His look and the song blew me away...and that was that!

When I played When Doves Cry literally all day long on my computer, I knew something interesting was happening to my musical tastes.

applying the make-up in the beginning of Purple Rain got me onboard. One look at those eyes and i felt one who could teach me something...something about Love and that it is an energy that can't die.

Perhaps Prince was inspired by the old woman in the bath in 'The Shining' from 1980?

I FEEL SO DAMN OLD.

I became a Prince fan in the summer of 1979 possibly 1980. My cousin was staying over for the summer and he was playing Still Waiting from the PRINCE album(casette at the time). I was like "WOW". I asked my cousin the name of the girl singing. hahhahaha!! He told me who it was and I went out and bought the first and second albums. I have never been the same ever since.....and neither has my wallet.

hmmm It could have been listening to stuff that my roommate had that wasn't on the radio. She was a "collector" before it was the 'chic' thing to do- when her friends just showed up at the apt. with unmarked cassettes.... lurking
Or, I think it was the words to "Sign 'O' the Times". They just spoke to me...
Yeah, it was the combination. SOTT came out, and I said, "Okay, I dig this guy". nod

Your lies, they cut me.
Now your words don't mean a thing.

I was in a lapdance club in Birmingham (UK) called "LEGS ELEVEN" around 1998, and I remember seeing a girl perform a mind-blowing poledance to DARLING NIKKI.

I remember hearing those lyrics, and that powerful chorus, and it just went so well with the girl's gyrations and sexy movements.

I just had to find out who the song was by - and that's how I discovered my Prince obsession !

I became a fan when I saw Prince in concert with Rick James on the Fire It Up Tour. I was only 10 years old at the time and knew very little about Prince other than a few of his songs, like Sexy Dancer and I Wanna Be Your Lover. I came away from that concert hooked.

Always liked the old singles - Wanna Be your Lover - Soft and Wet etc but I became a fan after I saw the 1999 video.
