Purple Rain dreams Script

Sorry to the moderator sincerly about the double post entry but I usually just read these things and enjoy... and if something offends me or I get bored I just click to another post. Then tonight it happened again... someone asked what our favorite movie was and I was going to comment on that and the thread must have been moved. damn that was quick, anyway, as a ole film historian that once wrote a book on WB and their distaste for the Third Reich, I found myslef looking at a script i took long ago from the WB library (yes i stole it) when I worked there on a stipend from college while i was researching for that very book. There was a box of about 30 or so, different versions so now some 13 years later I am reading it and see the changes.

Now one moment about DANCEWITHME.... I have admired your comments for some time and assumed either you or that guy with the avatar of the old mustached guy would chime in.

ANYWAY back to the movie script. And the point... to whoever has read the script http://corky.net/scripts/...eRain.html<---heres the online version that closely matches my hard copy version, what scenes are you glad they left our and what scenes should they have put back in?

I have picked the scene where his mother and him are in the mirror and she puts makeup on him and tells him he looks like a girl... obviously she wanted him to be a girl... he is left once she leaves staring at himself in the mirror.

I know a guy that is researching the making of Sargent York and will be in those studios next week. I have bribed him with 12 racks of my Popdaddy's BBQ ribs (im in the BBQ business) to find some footage that confirms it was even shot. he will spend some time viewing outakes... can u imagine... I need sargent york and purple rain for a paper I am writing.

yes moderator, thank you so much for reposting the link to the script... did mine not work?

See... moderators can be helpful! Anyway, as I said, for those of us who have read it... what parts would you have left in or taken out. I have listed mine... I am glad all those Motorcycle things were out.

I think the way they edited it was great. Sure, I'd love to see the version with the cut scenes, it definitely would have been a much darker film...but honestly I think it's perfect the way it is.

I think your right... you know there are many films these days that due to DVD re-releases and deleted scenes we get to see that which for most of the hundred or so years of film history we never see. Besides theres only so much the ass can take of those theatre seats in 1984.

Many times it helps us understand some things we see in the film. For instance, after the mother son mirror scene with prince the entire earing thing (which was the earing his mother put on him in the mirror when she was saying she wished he was a girl, makes sense. As does the near death chicken race with the frieght train make the train horn during the basement tandrum scene ((where I think Prince's anger is well acted) make sense.

I like to see these type of commentaries and outakes to make sense of things... like why scorcese shot half of aviator in the old 2 color style, or why he shot forward in hughes life while that guy was pushing a broom.

Wow , this sounds very interesting because I always herad that there are no existing outtakes of Purple Rain, and that´s why they didn´t use any for the 20 yr. anniversary DVD.

I´m curious what your friend is going to come up with. Maybe you shold´ve mentioned him AFTER getting the outtakes...I doubt he´ll get them now that you´ve woken up the sleeping dogs. lol

There's also only so much you can show and still get an R rating -- which is why the rape scene (mercifully) and the barn scene were omitted.

There must be outtakes -- because we've seen snippets of them. They're in the "When Doves Cry" montage in the film and in the videos.

Oh, of course there are some outtakes, I´ve seen them lots of times ( the barn scene, Prince punching Jellybean etc.etc.) but what I mean is that a lot of those outtakes probably don´t exist anymore, or else at least some of them would´ve been on the DVD as well.

I think we had a discussion about this before, and as far as I recall, there were some who posted that those outtakes probably don´t exist anymore because back in the 80s people didn´t expect that they might be of any use one day.

A bit off topic but I´ve also seen some weird Star Wars footage in the early 80s that I´ve never seen again eversince.

Please. This isn't some silent film from 1924. Outtakes don't just cease to exist. (Hell, they just released a new version of "Baby Face" -- a Barbara Stanwyck film from 1933 -- with additional footage that was removed by Hollywood censors back in the day.) People either still have the footage but don't want it to be seen, have the footage and don't know it, or they had it and destroyed it on purpose.

I'd say scenario #1 is the most likely.

I know, that´s what I was thinking as well...they re-release films from the early twenties, and then they don´t have outtakes from the 80s ? But , as I said above, I don´t claim they got destroyed, I merely paraphrased from what I remember about that thread we had about this. Sure, maybe you´re right, maybe the outtakes still exist but then again, why weren´t they on the DVD ?

well I don't expect WB security to be milling around here. And just because he is affilated with a theif (Me) means he is one LOL

No, I just wanted him to see what was out there... once you get approval to loom at one thing its easier to see another. its the TIME that gets spent wading through that stuff that makes its appearance so unlikely. first someone has to care... and this is purple rain not important films like star wars or colbra or something, then someone has to make the trip to its location (hoping its all kept in one spot), then there is access and time wading through TONS of worthless shit. then there's getting it out.

I am always amazed by the legend of a performer being broken by veiwing such footage and seeing them beahve like regular people... I wonder what prince would have looked like goofing around or waiting or how he looks when he flubbs a line?
