Prince Upstaging other artists

The 3 times that come 2 mind r:

1. Hall of fame where he made Travelling Wilbury's & co.look like they could only play 2 chords between em'

2. Rave Un2 year 2000 when P bullies Lenny Kravitz about and lets him know 'this here is my stage mofo'

3. U make my Sunshine song with Angie Stone...cracks me up everytime I listen 2 it....nearer the mid-end of the tune Angies starts a few voice acrobatics, P is like 'I aint havin' that & bust's out with some serious Prince screaming'
Unstaged Angie like she stole something disbelief

It's these kinds of things that make him the greatest entertainer around!

Yeah Prince is cool like that, but he acted like a prick infront of James Brown and Michael Jackson on that clip in the mid 80's.

That clip's been debated so much but I have 2 say P wasn't a Prick @ all...in fact it was genius what he did.

Tink about it...James Brown, Michael Jackson and Prince all shared a stage once ....and all anyone can remember all talk about is Prince...thats why he's the best nod

Prince showed off'd in a way that made him look foolish. Like he was desperate or something. It was a James Brown show, not a Prince one.

I disagree...he's an entertainer and thats exactly what he did...entertained.

If P went on that stage and just sang a little then started jumping up n down he'd just be Michael Jackson in high heels neutral

U don't try and upstage someone else's concert. I mean yeah, on performances with other artists like an mtv show, yeah u can upstage who u like, but I just think Prince was insecure enough to think "right i've got to upstage Michael Jackson", and he did, but I just don't like the whole thing, too forced.

Considering what a great guitar player he usually is, I think Prince's playing on "While My Guitar..." was woeful and lacking in any form. And as for that JB/MJ clip...embarassing is the word.

Embarassing in the way he rode his bodyguard up to the stage.

But it was so bizzare and memorable...Prince made it spontanious and crazy...Prince was really...back then I think lots of people were scared of him, attracted to him, and in awe of him in those days...he was really one exciting mystery it seems like. Brown was classic, MJ was family friendly and Prince was...sex razz

Um, it's a little obvious that Prince was under the influence of something in that JB/MJ track...

I don't think that's upstaging, in the traditional sense.

The theatrics of the "Gently Weeps" performance were one thing, but I've never felt the content of the solo itself was all that jaw-dropping -- not from him.

That whole clip is horrible. Jacko showed the respect. Prince just stuck a v sign up at James and decided to show the audience what he could do, even though they couldn't give 2 shits. Some of you like that, but I just think it reeks of self importance. I often like his bizarre tv appearances, but not that one.

I didn't consider Prince really upstaging the other artists in the times that you mentioned, that's just his way of performing I think. He acts the same way when there's no one on stage with him!

Another memorable upstaging is when P manages to upstage Shena Easton on the U Got the look video..
Prince looks and sounds and dances like more of a woman than she does...upstages her Scottish ass and just when U think he's done all the upstaging he's gonna do...P does a cool guitar solo @ the end and looks at Sheana like...'and what U got' ? neutral

Anyone seen the video how P really tore up the stage in Camden in 1988 when Ron Wood gets on stage and performs the Rolling stones classic 'Miss U'....P can't resist upstaging his wrinkly rocker ass neutral

Well Ron Wood to me has always seemed to be a really fun and easy going type of guy, so I think he probably took it as Prince being an entertainer and great musician and I doubt that he had that much of a problem with it at all. Now Keith on the other hand maybe!

yea i kinda cringed a bit when I watched it to be honest..... eek
the guitar piece was ok, but when he stripped off and stepped up to the mic it was like he couldn't get MJs 'iloovee yooouuu' out of his head, so he just said fck it il just give a token P wail and rub myself down with baby oil doh!

Still made me giggle though giggle

Even though it wasn't "on-stage" - I would have to say that Prince totally "upstaged" George Clinton in "We Can Funk".

You can barely hear the godfather of Funk on that song.

I have watched this clip from start to the end where the streetlamp falls on top of prince until I no longer wince at it. That was a hell of a lot of times~! LOL anyway.. my thought was that since he admired JB so much and is a typical musician that probably sat in the back making his fingers play every stroke... by the time he DID get on stage it was like he had been there the whole time and rather preferred to play. Problem is... you dont start that way... u gotta proof ur the master before you endulge in wierd shit. from the glove which he threw in to the audience and they threw back at him to the big lamp falling on him and the audience it was quite embarrassing. The mike work was good though
I may have the jelly 4 ur peanut butta but u got 31 hours and 21 minutes left.

Prince HAS to upstage other artists....he's 5 foot nothin'. I've noticed that alot of shorter performers/artists tend to upstage their fellow (many times taller) counterparts during live performances. When you're that small, you have to make twice as much noise to not only get noticed, but to also stand out, and be remembered. On some performances that I've seen, the drum set is taller than Prince. I'm 5'2", so when I used to go out clubbing I would have to make a lot of noise, otherwise, I would get stepped on by all these bitches who were waaay taller than me. That just happened to make me stand out more, even though it was only so I wouldn't be trampled. I live in a world full of giants. cry
