People are like "Really? Prince? Why him? I mean, he's...okay, he's kinda cool but Prince is like...you know...he's weird and too pretty to be a man and...I didnt know you like ROCK music!" rolleyes

Then I go into my whole instamatic defense explaination and then he comes to town and then we go and see him and LO and BEHOLD, I have transformed them, their musical tastes and beliefs cool big grin

hey everyone, its so cool to see young fans like me!
Im 21 myself and African American so when my friends who may not be as good fans or not even fans at all see that I really love him, they actually have great respect for me when I explain my passion for him. They actually think that I am more smart about what I listen to when it comes to music. Mind you, most of my friends are African American and to me in my opinion among the younger set of my race he is HIGHLY respected. I remember just this past weekend lol having a fun lil argument on a college trip to NYC with about 20-25 of my friends about who is better Prince or Mj and it made me feel great that Prince won by a landslide because the unamimous argument was that "he was sexy and his guitar playing is awesome:lol

I do have white friends, but I usually do not tell them, I remember telling one guy about about how much I respected prince and his music, and he quickly told me Prince was gay, and some more white people have told me that he stinks at guitar playing, or other bad things...Im not trying to make it a race issue...I just see a pattern of how much respect he gets with the younger set even though Im seeing alot of white younger artists copy the man like he just died or something (*cough* Justin Timberlake!* cough*)

I've had pretty much the same white kids vs. black kids experience. I'd say what mehogeni said is pretty on point.

From Females:
1.They think its hilarious
2.They think hes cute but dont know anything about him rolleyes
3.Name "that one song" that they "love" confused
4.They think he is madd gay and dont understand y im in2 him at all
5.They actually know a bit about him and respect him smile

From Males:
1.They think its hilarious
2.They think hes madd gay...and then the Prince jokes start 2 fly
3.They ask me y I like him so much as if its a bad thing 2 be in2 him
4.He went out with some hot girls... yes I know this...and? rolleyes
5.They respect him as a musician and or effect on women neutral

A lot of the time I get blank stares b/c people arent 2 sure if they are thinking of the right person and they dont want 2 come off as naive lol

A lot of older people ask me if Prince is his real name and whats his "actual" race...I guess PR got people all mixed up giggle But I dont see how it matters anyway... neutral A lot of older people dont even know hes still making music mad

I actually like the responses I get from my peers rather than older people who seem 2 think its sooooo funny b/c Im young and "dont know nuffin bout no Prince"...uh yea,I do...and I probably know more about his career in music b4 and after Purple Rain than they do rolleyes ....and own more material!!! mad

I was into OutKast for the last few years and Andre 3000 is often compared to Prince. I know the reactions I got just from saying I was an OutKast fan so when I started listening to Prince - I kept it to myself. I eventually found that one of my closest friends loves Prince too (we're both 16) and I found out because I asked her if she liked OutKast and when she said yes I asked if she liked Prince.

A lot of people can't get used to how "different" he sounds and the way his songs are a bit out there. Since songs today are so generic and repetative, to hear something that doesn't stick to the routine is weird for them.

But so far only one person has really expressed hate for him, the rest have been midly interested or a fan themselves. wink

Could it be that there's a whole different feel in Europe? I'm guessing most of you are from the US. I live in Belgium and in my spare time I run a youth club, something to keep the young cats of the streets. Now, the music they dance to is NOT Prince, but they all seem to know him (at least heard about him) and KNOW he's a genius. That's just what the word is out there.

I remember a few years ago, there was this kid who was a real trouble maker. But every once and a while he got cool and guess what music he played then (just before closing time): Purple Rain... Every single night! Now he didn't know this was Prince, he just liked that song and said it calmed him down.

I don't know, but I'm not affraid to say I like Prince, never was and people always said they had a lot of respect for him, even if they didn't like his music.

I've been a fan since I was about 13, got alot of different reactions...blank stares were common, some would look at me as if to say "why him? I mean, he's made some good songs but..." lol. Most of the time though they'd be cool with it, recognising how talented he is and why I would like him.

Well being from the Twin Cities lots of other people my age grew up with a steady dose of Prince on the radio so lots of people my age like his songs...or the hit songs that we all grew up with.
