When he didn't care what other people thought of him and the style of music he was creating.

When he took influences from lots of different genres and blended it into something unique.

Is making nothing but cold hard synthesized funk/rock only and a few slow jams here and there. No horns, no orchestras, no jazz, no classical music, no rappers, and no folk. In other words, the way he was from the beginning of his career through "Purple Rain" before he got all artsy/fartsy.

you know.. imo, artists that try to do there thing the way they did it once before come off sometimes as trying to hard. it makes them look washed up because usually they can never compare to what they once were. (not that this is the case with prince) but maybe that is why he trys new things and doesnt go back to his ol funky self. i respect him for that. also, i like to see him evolve. whether it be with horns and folk or hip hop or whatever he wants to use. he is ahead of the times now just as much as he was then, just with a bit of different flava. dont get me wrong, my favorite stuff he did was def the early period. but i can also appreciate his new stuff too.
