It doesn't really matter anymore does it. He obviously never told Prince to his face, they seemed like friends and Prince has said that James Brown was his idol growing up! | |

I don't think James Brown meant that in a negative fashion at all. Entertainers always comparing themselves, especially the older generation to the new ones that come out. I think Mr. Brown was proud to see the younger generation at that time emulating "some" of his style and appreciated that. During James Brown's homegoing services, his manager mentioned that James Brown told him he had work to do with Prince and MJ...so I don't believe that there was any tension between them at all.
The manager also stated that Mr. Brown requested that those that emulated his music (and he did not mean that in a negative way) to continue his/the legacy and I believe everyone knew the 2 people he was mainly talking about when he said that. He also requested that they clean up some of the lyrics in the music that is out there today because it is hurting his people. So definitely don't believe the hype, just some writer trying to get paid...controversy (no pun intended) always sells. [Edited 1/14/07 9:41am] | |

I didn't know JB knew how to play instruments?! JB was the Godfather of Soul, but Prince made a world all his own blending everone from JB, Jimi, to Sly, Earth, Wind and Fire, to Joni Mitchell. His sound was his own and a world was given birth and formed by Prince. Last I checked JB never laid in a bathtub for a video or performed songs like The Ballad of Dorthy Parker. What I am trying to say is that JB might want to take credit for P's style but P's style is as varied as it gets, JB should be flattered not insulted. I believe JB said it though.  | |

Honestly, who cares? If it was said (big "if"), it was over 20 years ago. James Brown is dead. Prince isn't the same person he was back then.

Of all the JB influenced entertainers, only 2 people were mentioned by name at his funeral. That says something. Besides that, even if the comment was made it was ages ago and it doesn't strike me as mean spirited at all. It's just like when Little Richard makes similar comments. It sounds like a good natured jab and nothing more. Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise. | |

Mr. Brown's comments made years ago didn't sound like it was mean-spirited at all. It's water under the bridge anyway and I still don't understand why people are looking for negative reasons to say there was tension between James Brown and Prince. You can honestly see from Prince's music and dance moves over the years, that he kept a bit of James Brown's legacy alive..that says a lot...and I believe JB was proud of that. Unfortunately that is the type of world we live in, but pay no attention to those "ignorant" comments, it's nothing but ignorance, jealousy and hate; because it's so easy for people like that to sit behind a computer screen and make those racist comments, like "online bullies"; but if they were standing directly in front of the people they made those comments about, they'd keep their mouths shut like scared little rabbits. Little Richard, James Brown, and I'm sure Jimi Hendrix (if he were still alive) would ALL claim that Prince stole their look/style. But now people are "stealing" Prince's style (Justin Timberlake, Andre 3000, D'Angelo, Beck, etc). It's all a cycle - everyone has their day and EVERYONE has influences.
Also, I don't mean to be disrespectful of the deceased, but James Brown and Jimi Hendrix really didn't have a diverse sound at all. They were extremely talented, yes - but both had a signature sound that they didn't stray too far from. Prince, on the other hand, seems to have branched out into using almost every sound/technique available. |

I agree with you that Justin Timberlake does copy a lot from other R&B singers, Rappers and Prince. I also heard JT give props to JB stating without JB there'd be no JT and others.
